Eric Decker visiting Jets on Wednesday

a63c2619c8f71fb94afae97a5688ddd3 AP

Tuesday was a relatively quiet day for the Jets and a totally silent one for wide receiver Eric Decker, but things could heat up on both fronts on Wednesday.

Kim Jones of NFL Network reports that Decker will visit with the Jets on Wednesday and an aggressive offer from the Jets, who have plenty of money under the cap, could mean that it is the only visit that Decker makes. The Jets had a rotten receiving corps last season and Santonio Holmes has been jettisoned, leaving them in fairly desperate need of help at the position.

The big question that they’ll have to answer is whether Decker will be as effective catching passes from Geno Smith or someone else the Jets bring in as he was catching passes from Peyton Manning with a ton of offensive talent around him. As the top wideout on the market — and highest remaining available player on PFT’s Hot 100 at No. 8 — Decker’s going to be paid like he can be that productive whether it is from the Jets or someone else.

It’s a question that other receivers in Decker’s position have often failed to answer positively, but the Jets need help at the position badly enough to roll the dice that things break the other way.

Well this should answer the question is Decker a #1 WR. By default yes but at least the debate can go away.

He is going to be throwing to himself right ?

This would be the worst decision Eric Decker could ever make.

OK, Decker had good number because he played with Peyton. Wonder what those numbers will be like with -gulp- Geno Smith…

    they need him…badly

    Leave him alone Idzik… Please.

Good, break the bank on this fraud and let the true underrated gem Golden Tate return to Seattle.

  7. arwiv says: Mar 12, 2014 7:35 AM

If Decker signs with the Jets i’m betting no one will remember his name by 2015.

Doesn’t matter who’s catching the ball when there is no one to throw to him. One of the worst QB situations that Decker may be signing up for. Definitely shows he is in it for the money and not the success.

Do you people WATCH football? Yes, Decker played with Manning, but are you reading stat sheets or have you watched him play?

He uses his size and athleticism to make very impressive downfield catches on passes that are quite often not so accurate.

Yes, Peyton was his QB, but you act like he never had to move half an inch to catch a ball in two years. Dude had over 600 yards receiving and 8 TDs as a second-year player with TIM TEBOW. He’s a player.

You would think that the Jets would spend their cash somewhere else. They should shore up their defense until they can obtain a franchise QB. I don’t think that Geno “Happy Feet” Smith is the one. He reminds me of Kordell Stewart, except he isn’t that good. They might as well bring Sanchez back. Who else are they?

Everyone always forgets this guy had very solid numbers w/ Tebow. I have seen enough of him in college and in Denver to say I approve this move. Get it done. This however doesn’t solve the problem that we just lost our RT and we need a RG!!!

  12. 6thsense10 says: Mar 12, 2014 7:56 AM

Decker had 612 yards 8 TDs and averaged 14 yards per reception with Tim Tebow throwing the ball to him. That was in his second season. He is a big receiver at 6’3 and around 220lbs. I think he will be alright wherever he goes.

Do YOU watch football?! Have you seen Geno Smith play?!

wouldnt hate it if the jets signed him as it would be an instant upgrade. decker, kerely and draft pick would be leaps and bounds better than what geno had to throw to last year.

  16. scoops1 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:18 AM

Didn’t know decker can field ground balls

  17. denverdave3 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:31 AM

i like Decker, but he benefitted from the fact that other defenses double-teamed Thomas, mostly leaving decker in one-on-one situations.

If he’s the guy, at Jets or elsewhere, he’s not going to be so free.

  18. dfco74 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:33 AM

Yo decker thanks for winning my fantasy league for me.

  19. primetime2 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:33 AM

Everyone saying decker is only good cause of manning is funny. Remember he was 2nd in the nfl in rec tds with tebow as his qb.

  20. williamboshanky says: Mar 12, 2014 8:38 AM

Decker IS a baller BUT he is NOT a legit #1. Kerley should be playing the slot… maybe Marty sees something in Stephen hill that I DON’T.
Signing Decker isn’t a bad move at all… I just dont feel elite.

  21. nghtrder169 says: Mar 12, 2014 8:38 AM

Decker did alright with some QB named Tebow before that Manning guy came to town

  22. floridahawker says: Mar 12, 2014 8:57 AM

    They’ll over pay him.

While Geno did put up some stinkers and went through some rookie pains. He did show some flashes and he does throw a nice accurate deep ball. he just didnt have the weapons to throw it to on a consistent basis… the 2 deep threats he had stephen hill was injured and Holmes stopped trying 2 years ago.

  24. howitzer819 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:08 AM

Someone really compared Geno Smith to Kordell Stewart? Are you sure you didn’t mean to compare him to Doug Williams, Randall Cunningham, Michael Bishop, Michael Vick, RG3, Russell Wilson, Colin Kapernick, Tyrod Taylor, or Daunte Culpepper? God bless lazy comparisons!!

And Decker is a guy who put up huge numbers at Minnesota (that’s college!), in Denver with Tebow (who no one would ever say is a good quarterback), and does so because he has talent. Is it possible, and just hear me out here, that maybe like… talented wide receivers can make quarterbacks *gulp* better? That possibly while yes Geno Smith does have very huge flaws in his game (lots of 1st year 2nd round picks do) that MAYBE, just maybe, his situation was made concurrently worse by having almost no one to throw the ball to, and giving him someone to throw the ball to could make him… better?

  25. mogogo1 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:11 AM

I like Decker a lot but he has all the signs of being a guy whose numbers take a huge drop the minute his QB isn’t a Hall of Famer and he doesn’t have guys like Welker and the two Thomases to balance out the coverage.

  26. micknangold says: Mar 12, 2014 9:11 AM

If they have to pay him more than 6 million a year I say don’t do it. Otherwise, welcome aboard.

  27. raiderlyfe510 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:16 AM

I wouldn’t sign Decker unless Peyton Manning comes with him.

  28. jw1991 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:19 AM

didn’t he have tebow throwing to him before Manning? I believe he still performed admirably

  29. csiegert4 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:39 AM

It’s slightly ridiculous to ask how he good Decker can be without Manning as he was actually VERY good with one of the worst QB’s football has ever seen in Tebow. He’s one of the best red zone receivers in football, one of the most well rounded receivers (can literally do it all), and is probably a top 10-15 receiver in the game. But God I hope he doesn’t wind up a Jet where his talent will be wasted.

  30. lukedunphysscienceproject says: Mar 12, 2014 9:44 AM

Dude caught 44 passes for 612 yds. and 8 TDs from TIM TEBOW.

    He’ll be fine.

  31. jwcarlson says: Mar 12, 2014 9:53 AM

Eric Decker, like any of us would be doing, is looking to cut a fat hog in the ass. More power to him.

  32. malab377 says: Mar 12, 2014 9:53 AM

He had big numbers with Tebow, but Tebow had God with him on each throw! Geno Smith only has the evil eye from Sanchez…

  33. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:10 AM

He had “big” numbers from tebow because defenses would not defend for the pass. That’s why they beat the steelers. Defenders were completely caught off guard when tebow decided to throw,

  34. jdsjets7 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:32 PM

For all these reasons this is a good move for Decker and the Jets. Decker is better then anyone the Jets have at WR. He succeed even when Tebow was throwing him the ball. Geno Smith is a far better QB then Tebow. Geno was a rookie and had his ups and downs but he was able to beat Drew Brees and Tom Brady this year. The Jets have a strong running game and good OL. And with NO OFFENSE the Jets went 8-8 and are a young team on the rise.
