Giants sign J.D. Walton

The Giants have been busy over the first two days of free agency and their latest addition is center J.D. Walton.

Walton’s signing was announced by the team along with the previously reported additions of guard Geoff Schwartz and running back Rashad Jennings.

Walton finished last season as a member of the Redskins, but never played in a game for Washington or anyone else. Walton hasn’t actually played in a game since Week Four of the 2012 season when he broke his ankle during a game for the Broncos. Complications from that injury forced him to miss all of last season and led Denver to waive him near the end of the season.

That makes it something of a long shot that Walton will be able to provide much help to the Giants in 2014 even if they did just release center David Baas. Kevin Boothe is likely to stay at center after moving there last season while Baas was out of the lineup, but Walton could provide some experienced depth (36 starts in his first three seasons with Denver) if he’s healthy enough to get back on the field.
