John Elway loves the thought of DeMarcus Ware opposite Von Miller

Elway AP

John Elway had a big smile on his face as he said on NFL Network on Wednesday that the Broncos knew they wanted to pounce when the Cowboys cut DeMarcus Ware a day earlier.

Elway raved about what Ware can do in the Broncos’ defense and said he thinks Ware will bounce back from a disappointing 2013 season in Dallas.

“We really believe he’s got a lot of football left in him. He played through a lot of pain last year. He’s had a tremendous career and we really think that opposite Von Miller he will really add to the pass rush,” Elway said.

Although the Broncos appear to be spending big now to win a title while Peyton Manning is still in his prime, Elway said the Broncos expect to be in good shape in the future and aren’t pushing as much money into future years as it might appear.

“We’re all in now, but we’re really in this for the future as well,” Elway said. “We’re not mortgaging our future. We plan on being a good football team for a long time.”

As long as the Broncos have Ware and Miller playing together, that will be a lineup that Elway loves, and opposing quarterbacks will hate.

Broncos still have 10 million in cap after Ware, Talib, Ward.

    Jelly?

John Elway is a smart man.

As long as Miller can stay off whatever substance he doesn’t have an issue with and that Ware can stay healty other that yeah john that looks good on paper and in madden.

Horseface better smile while he can. He’s got 2 years to get it done and then BOOM! Back to the basement.

  5. mataug says: Mar 12, 2014 6:52 PM

They had 25m when free agency started yesterday evening, how can they still have 10m when Ware’s cap figure for 2014 is 13m ?

  6. dukeearl says: Mar 12, 2014 6:52 PM

If they wanted to win while Manning was still in his prime.. they are a couple of years late…

  7. jredshoes says: Mar 12, 2014 6:52 PM

I wonder I’d he thinks about the two of them getting their Azzes kicked again by next years NFC champs?

Denver will be the first 19-0 team in NFL history. #bookit

I’m a cowboys fan (thank you for condolences), and even I think if Ware can get healthy that would be amazing to watch those two, it’s the same intrigue everyone has with Watt and Clowney possibly being on same team.

Trying to convince yourself or everyone else? Sounds like both to me.

“Peyton Manning still in his prime…”? Didn’t realize it was still 2009.

And can clear up another $10mil with the release of Dreesen and Tamme.

They’ll look good next to each other on the injury report.

  15. lennydpocketqb says: Mar 12, 2014 6:59 PM

If the Super Bowl was played with this team he has today, they still lose to the Seahawks.

  16. matterson20 says: Mar 12, 2014 7:00 PM

You can’t have it both ways. A price will eventually be paid. Unless Denver is messing with the cap like they were when they won their two Super Bowls.

    People are jealous.

  18. hakunamangata says: Mar 12, 2014 7:08 PM

Broncos still have no way to resign any of their UFA’s like Von Miller, Demarius or Julius Thomas next year and no real plan (or team) past 2014.

    Jelly?

  19. leevi98 says: Mar 12, 2014 7:22 PM

No team has ever won with a huge FA spending spree on older vets. they better win it all this season cause lots of cuts are coming in 2015!

  20. sportsfan18 says: Mar 12, 2014 7:34 PM

They paid him MORE than the Cowboys were going to pay him this coming season…

  21. djstat says: Mar 12, 2014 7:36 PM

Manning counts 20 million against the cap, yet they had $25 million to start free agency? Wow

  22. rockieschef says: Mar 12, 2014 7:57 PM

He had better love the “thought” for 20 mil

  23. clownsfan says: Mar 12, 2014 7:58 PM

DEF wasn’t the problem. Manning choking was the problem.

  24. mrclaytonbigsby says: Mar 12, 2014 8:09 PM

Knighton Von Ware Wolfe, will be fun to watch next year.

  25. skullpatrolsilvernblack says: Mar 12, 2014 8:49 PM

Elway has already handed out a lot of guaranteed money, if they don’t win a super bowl next year, Denver is done for awhile. Maybe they think manning will play forever and D.Thomas, J. Thomas, and Von Miller will re-sign for the league minimum lol

  26. rationalitybias says: Mar 12, 2014 9:02 PM

He will be back to form in a 3-4. People seem to forget he is a 3-4 OLB

  27. jjfootball says: Mar 12, 2014 9:09 PM

THE BRONCOS DON’T CARE HOW MUCH THEY HAVE TO SPEND FOR ANOTHER CHANCE TO CHOKE IN A BIG GAME!!!!

  28. jjackwagon says: Mar 12, 2014 9:14 PM

Weird…Elway normally loves the thought of eating fresh hay and clover.

  29. rmavs says: Mar 12, 2014 9:15 PM

Seriously!! People are doubting? Manning led the greatest offense ever known to the NFL but his defense couldn’t handle a mediocre offense in the Stupid Bowl. And his offense was stymied against the greatest defense. Hmmm…sounds to me as though the Broncos are all in for the upcoming year. Building a defense in order to match what they may see come next year. Manning only has a few years left and the team is building on the right side of the ball. However, I would have taken Allen over Ware. Time, as it always does, will tell.

  30. beerbudsnbevo says: Mar 12, 2014 9:33 PM

Should have went after Allen. Ware will be on the injury report buy week 4.

  31. ravensbob says: Mar 12, 2014 9:41 PM

Positive signings, now they will only lose the next SB to Seattle by 14 .

  32. mimitaroo says: Mar 12, 2014 10:00 PM

What was wrong with the thought of Phillips across from Miller? Especially considering Phillips excelled in the Denver system and by far outperformed Ware last year for a fraction of the price.

Way to annoy your current roster.

Broncos also still need to sign another CB, HB, WR, G/C, LB

Except Broncos run a 4-3. Check the depth chart on their own team website.

  35. slick50ks says: Mar 12, 2014 10:30 PM

All these signings are meaningless when your QB has no clutch gene to speak of.

  36. matt24bucs says: Mar 12, 2014 10:45 PM

Elway is an idiot! He just gave almost 50 million GUARANTEED to a pothead and a beatup that plays 8 games a year and gives you 3 sacks! Brilliant!

  37. nativeraider says: Mar 12, 2014 10:53 PM

I could be a douche like other teams s– talking fans but Ill say good signing. There defense was really exposed in the playoffs not to mention the Super Bowl. Broncos will win the division but hopefully we can steal a win in Oakland (crosses fingers).

  39. patfanken says: Mar 12, 2014 11:19 PM

Before Denver chokes on its own arrogance, I have one question. Who is playing on the OL. Right now IIRC, you don’t have a starting LT, LG, C, and RG. That’s a lot of key people to replace with little cap space and a statue for a QB. That D BETTER be great….and healthy

Do you ever wonder that maybe John was warming up for his REAL career as director of operations by being a Hall Of Fame quarterback? You go boy!! IMHO, Mr. Elway is approaching his pinnacle of success, and I am grateful to have been here watching!

  45. dasmol says: Mar 14, 2014 5:24 PM

Chargers are still gonna split the season with them and go on to win the AFC West.
