Report: Rodger Saffold returns to Rams after failing physical with Raiders

Getty Images

After agreeing to a new contract to join the Oakland Raiders on the first day of free agency, Rodger Saffold is actually returning to the St. Louis Rams.

Yes. You read that correctly.

According to Adam Schefter of, Saffold has reached an agreement on a five-year deal to return to the Rams.

The Oakland Raiders reached an agreement with Saffold on a five-year year deal to fill their hole at left tackle after letting Jared Veldheer walk in free agency. However, the Raiders announced that Saffold had failed his physical with the team and would not be signing after all.

Per Schefter, Saffold’s agents Alan Herman and Jared Fox said the Raiders had concerns over the state of Saffold’s shoulder. The Rams had “no concerns whatsoever” about the shoulder and quickly worked to bring him back to St. Louis.

Now the Raiders won’t have Saffold or Veldheer to anchor the left side of the offensive line,

Saffold agreed to a deal worth $42.5 million with $21 million guaranteed on the first day of free agency. It was a large contract for a player 17 games over the past three seasons due to a myriad of injuries that included his knee, pectoral and shoulder.

But the Rams are in a position to know better than anyone where Saffold is with his health as they would have evaluated him during end of season physicals in January.

It’s quite the turn of events for Saffold. The Rams get back a player that started game at left tackle, right tackle and guard for the team last season. The Raiders have to go back to the drawing board on who will handle the blind side of Terrelle Pryor or whomever ends up starting for Oakland next season.

I bet the Raiders realized what a big mistake that horrible contract was and used this avenue to escape.

Wow, the Raiders can’t even screw themselves over in free agency properly.

Saffold was just a cover for the draft. Oakland is drafting a LT not named Eric Fisher.

  7. thewiseowloftruth says: Mar 12, 2014 10:49 PM

I’d say this is good news for the Rams. That is, until the season opener after their first offensive play of the year when the announcer says that there’s an injury on the field…

  25. jeremycrowhurst says: Mar 12, 2014 10:53 PM

When the Raiders heard the howls of laughter from the 31 other teams at the offer they made, they decided anything less than an “S” on Saffold’s chest would constitute failing the physical.

  26. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 12, 2014 10:53 PM

Perhaps it’s fitting that he’s returning to the Rams , who continue to have one of the league’s worst offensive lines.

I try to stay positive and just deal with the media bashing of Mckenzie but, this is getting ridiculous! Mckenzie are you serious? Can you please make one good roster move. Drafting Sio Moore in the 3rd round and signing Rod Streater are the closest thing to good he has done. Figure it the F out Mckenzie!!!

    Wow, I’m speechless.

Reggie, I used to support you but I’ll be one of the millions calling for your head if were sub 8-8 this year. I have no idea why everyone gave you a 2 year pass to do work that should have been done in 1 year.

Everyone uses the ‘cap hell’ excuse, but the mess Reggie is in now is his own fault. Not cutting Seymour flat out had a lot of dead money last year. We could have been in this position this time last year, but with all the 1 year deals it feels like a constant rebuild.

Time is ticking, Reggie. Or else you’re gonna go and your brother is going to go back to teaching high school.

Seems like my boys are going to have another excuse for a bad season… A botched off-season.
I’m not liking this show. I’ve been a fan long enough that I had a large reservoir of goodwill toward the team. It’s empty now.

  60. supermanium says: Mar 12, 2014 11:08 PM

  63. norcalmafia says: Mar 12, 2014 11:08 PM

  66. bigtganks says: Mar 12, 2014 11:10 PM

  67. wwrgesusd says: Mar 12, 2014 11:10 PM

I think McFadden told the GM that Saffold is injury prone!

  68. mrlaloosh says: Mar 12, 2014 11:12 PM

Just remember these are the same Rams that drafted Jason a Smith #2 overall a couple of years ago. Loser franchise with dumb front office.

  69. cobibones13 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:12 PM

so wait, are we to assume Darren McFadden did pass a physical? I find that hard to believe.

  70. sclazo says: Mar 12, 2014 11:13 PM

This is what you call dysfunction.

  71. jdcush31 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:14 PM

That’s why contracts are contingent on physicals. The contract the Raiders were offering was based on him being fully healthy. Why give him that much money if there are injury concerns.

  72. aldavis4president says: Mar 12, 2014 11:14 PM

That’s interesting to say the least. Give me something Reggie Mac! I’ve had your back don’t let me down! I didn’t want to trade down and miss an opportunity to draft Watkins/clowney/mack but if we dnt start getting some decent talent in FA were going to need the extra picks. CMON MANN!!!

  73. robgilman says: Mar 12, 2014 11:15 PM

In other news, General Manager Reggie McKenzie has also failed a physical. He is getting his brained scanned for dementia as we speak

  74. docboss says: Mar 12, 2014 11:16 PM

Rams offered him 6 million (per internet sources) per year and he moved on. Rams should offer him 4 plus incentives. This is good news for both teams.

  78. cgsuddeath says: Mar 12, 2014 11:18 PM

  79. voice0freasonn says: Mar 12, 2014 11:19 PM

I would say lucky for us except for now there are no elite left tackles left. What the heck is going on in Alameda . We had the most money and come away with no left tackle how does that happen. Now we almost have to draft a left tackle hopefully Greg Robinson from Auburn is still there. Mckenzie what the heck are you doing it’s almost like he’s trying to ruin the team. All these teams are making huge additions and i dont think we’ve made one positive move yet. Reggie what are you waiting for? Do you realize we need to beat the Broncos twice next year? Get a move on it!

  80. xxgracegunnerxx says: Mar 12, 2014 11:24 PM

have fun against ware and von miller….now that the o line free agent pool is all but dried up.

  81. dcapettini says: Mar 12, 2014 11:25 PM

The best deals are often the ones that did not get done. All these idiots second guessing the Raiders don’t have any idea what the real deal is. Will you guys be sending McKenzie roses if Saffold goes down for the count this year? I think not. If you are paying out this kind of money and the fate of the team depends on it, just a whiff of a suspect shoulder should derail the whole thing. If you really want to give him a hard time, talk about not pursuing Eugene Monroe; undamaged goods and the class of the LT free agent market this year. He is no Jonathon Ogden, but he is the best of this years crop.

  82. kevpft says: Mar 12, 2014 11:29 PM

So let’s get this straight – the team with far and away the most cap room is the only one with a net loss of key talent at this stage? To both lose their best free agents and so far miss out on any of the key signings?

    If there’s a strategy here, it’s opaque.

  83. metscher5 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:29 PM

The old “he failed his physical trick” that’s Oakland’s chicken exit after realizing they way overpaid for RS. I guess if they trade up to no. 2 in the draft with the Rams and give up 2 draft picks they can land the OT they having been trying to lock up…sounds like a win-win to us Rams fans

  84. MostlyRight says: Mar 12, 2014 11:37 PM

Cardinals got Palmer for around a cheap salary and like a 7th round pick, Shaunessey for nothing, and now Veldheer for the cheapest LT contract in FA so far. Who does Steve Keim have incriminating photos of over in Raider nation?

  85. tinbender2000 says: Mar 12, 2014 11:38 PM

  88. rhemish says: Mar 12, 2014 11:59 PM

In order to fix a problem you must first admit you have one. Mark Davis you have a HUGE problem Reggie Mac . Your father spent his entire life building up his beloved franchise . Reggie has made so many mistakes it took him 2 years to purge bad contracts sould have taken 1 year….. He held on to r Seymour 1 year too long and cost us over 10 mill in dead money. He whiffed on flyn and cost us a 5th rd pick in the best draft in ten years. He let a competent Qb walk for a late 7 th rd pick with no replacement at the qb position……he had the 3rd pick in the last draft turned it into two injury plagued none productive players. He has added 0 core players in 2 1/2 years he has purged the roster of almost all Al Davis draft picks and received no compensation.. Some of these players could be very could depth players on a weak roster. M Mitchell safety Barksdale to van dyke db etc. He fired all the scouts and brought in his brother and friends to scout for the team.. Now with 69 mill in cap room room he can’t even do due diligence pre free agency saffold debacle. Mark please call Jon Gruden line him up for head coach 2015 and most of all let’s get a real GM not a GM who is getting on the job training and failing miserably. RAIDER NATION deserves it RIP AL DAVIS maybe with the recent events your haiters will SHUT UP ………..

Isnt it hilarious that this kinda stuff only happens to the bad teams i.e. Raiders and Browns, about “failing a physical”. Browns used that card last year.

Actually though, it was smart of both the Raiders n Browns part. Saffold blows, when it was reported he got that money, i was like wow the Raiders overpaid for that stiff.

But these 2 inept franchises constantly trip over themselves due to their own stupidity
