The Raiders didn’t make a competitive offer for tackle Jared Veldheer because they didn’t envision him to be a high-end left tackle. Instead, they see him as a right tackle.
The Cardinals definitely see him as a left tackle.
PFT has obtained full details regarding the five-year, $35 million contract. Veldheer received $6.25 million to sign and a fully-guaranteed base salary of $1.25 million in 2014. He has $3 million in 2015 base salary fully guaranteed, with another $3 million guaranteed for injury only. That $3 million becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2015 league year. Another $3.5 million in 2016 base salary is guaranteed for injury only; it becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2016 league year.
That’s a total of $10.5 million in fully guaranteed on signing, with another $6.5 million guaranteed for injury only.
The full base salary in 2016 is $6.5 million. Ditto for 2107 and 2018. Each year from 2014 through 2017, Veldheer can earn up to $500,000 for per-game active roster bonuses of $31,250 each.
The contract also has $2.5 million in escalators and a $500,000 annual Pro Bowl bonus.
Barring horrible performances (and the bar is very low at left tackle in Arizona), Veldheer will likely play under the contract for three years. The last two will hinge on various factors.
