Baltimore is the first of multiple visits for Steve Smith

Panthers Falcons Football AP

Steve Smith will have options as he pursues the next step in his career, outside Carolina.

Smith, the veteran wide receiver who was released by the Panthers today, already has one visit set up: Baltimore, where Smith is traveling this evening and will meet with the Ravens tomorrow.

But Smith apparently does not expect to sign right away. Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that Smith is planning to make other visits next week.

The 34-year-old Smith may not be quite the same player he once was, but he can still be a solid addition to some team’s offense. After Smith promised “blood and guts everywhere” when he plays against Carolina, the Panthers may be hoping that the team that signs Smith isn’t on their 2014 schedule.

Smith is out for blood and guts in every game……he is the best little baller out there

Go to the Colts and you will get to the Super bowl.

Planning and doing are two separate things. He will sign with the two-time Super Bowl Ravens tomorrow.

LOL his old. . Go retired and get some more tattoo’s. …

  8. promallninja says: Mar 13, 2014 10:40 PM

Just c’mon on down to New Orleans and we’ll beat Carolina up together. Let Brees help you pad your stats before you retire, and make Carolina watch it from a front row seat in the NFC South. :-)

  9. rohlo says: Mar 13, 2014 10:42 PM

he will end up in san diego..he is from so cal and was gonna go there when there was a rumor of him getting released few years ago.. plus chargers headcoach mike mccoy was his ocoordinator in carolina!! connect the dots,he is using bmore as leverage in a deal!!

  10. easternshoresfinest says: Mar 13, 2014 10:42 PM

come on ozzie…don’t let him leave without a deal.

  11. pantfan89 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:46 PM

Whatever team gets this guy, the fans will love him. Brings every game’s intensity to a whole new level and is good for at least one scuffle a game. Just one giant BAMF. It was a great 13 years #89.

  12. nfl4days says: Mar 13, 2014 10:49 PM

Come on down to New Orleans! We may have a $1.50 in cap spcae left, but Loomis can work his magic again.

  13. ravenmuscle says: Mar 13, 2014 10:51 PM

The redskins aren’t a Maryland team….that stinking joke of a team is a Virginia/DC team.

  14. snookau says: Mar 13, 2014 10:55 PM

    Tampa. Buddies with McCown.

  15. 619sdfan4life says: Mar 13, 2014 10:59 PM

I hope he lands in San Diego. He would be a awesome complainant to Keenan Allen

  16. sumkat says: Mar 13, 2014 11:02 PM

Wouldn’t mind him on my team. I think he still has some left in the tank, especially if he can just be a role player

I think he wants to stay in the NFC South, just to play the Panthers twice (plus all 4 cities are relatively close, so he could probably go without having to move)

  17. ✦ Pittsburgh is the City of Champions ✦ says: Mar 13, 2014 11:06 PM

Anyone who wants to go to Baltimore is criminally insane. Look it up.

    Miami Dolphins!

  19. ✦ Pittsburgh is the City of Champions ✦ says: Mar 13, 2014 11:11 PM

Steelers don’t want him. Take notes from a real team.

  20. seatownballers says: Mar 13, 2014 11:12 PM

    Patriots will sign him

    Complement*

  22. tomhagen1 says: Mar 13, 2014 11:17 PM

He’s en route to Baltimore in a car going 30mph with the blinker on (he’s old).

  23. cjpom664 says: Mar 13, 2014 11:22 PM

He could definitely be the difference maker that puts a contender over the top. You gotta love the way he plays, leaves it all out on the field every game.

  24. wahoo21 says: Mar 13, 2014 11:32 PM

He would look really good wearing lightning bolts…..Telesco will make this happen

  25. fordmandalay says: Mar 13, 2014 11:39 PM

He’ll be a Patriot by next week. You think he’ll pass up a chance to be Brady’s prime target? And that Brady will pass up the chance to have him? Count on it.

  26. 4thqtrsaint says: Mar 13, 2014 11:40 PM

If the Panthers were worried about facing Smith, he’d still be a Panther.

  27. cajunirish says: Mar 14, 2014 12:18 AM

Like the New Orleans idea. He can come here and whoop the Carolina Kittens twice a year until he retires.

  28. vincentbojackson says: Mar 14, 2014 12:25 AM

Ravens better not let him leave. Smith may be 35 years old, but it’s been proven the Ravens can’t add a decent WR through the draft.

  29. birdcen says: Mar 14, 2014 12:28 AM

    Broncos….you watch.

  30. JSpicoli says: Mar 14, 2014 12:34 AM

He’s my favorite player in the NFL. I’d be ecstatic if he went to OAK, but realize he will go to someone contending next year.

Good luck 89. You are the man

  31. 3superman3 says: Mar 14, 2014 12:35 AM

I’m a giants can but I agree w the saints call. They’ll be an even better offense and you can play Carolina twice

  32. bigwii says: Mar 14, 2014 12:57 AM

Bring him to NE let him get that ring.

  33. jamaltimore says: Mar 14, 2014 1:40 AM

He may be from socal but I’ll be surprised if he leaves the castle without a deal. He’s a combination of dmase and quan! They both had pretty good runs in charm city.

  34. tdubdizzle says: Mar 14, 2014 1:48 AM

Raiders for 8 million, done deal.

  35. 4512dawg4512 says: Mar 14, 2014 2:41 AM

Funny, I would take Terrell Owens over little Steve Smith in a heart beat. T.O is in great shape and 100% healthy

  36. stonedolphin89 says: Mar 14, 2014 2:47 AM

Plenty of room for Smith down in Miami! I doubt he’s asking for a big contract, we wouldn’t ask him to be a #1 option, he’s a more than reliable option for Tannehill, and you get to spend what years you have left in lovely South Beach.

  37. garrison1981 says: Mar 14, 2014 2:51 AM

Would love to see him in Det. Calvin Smith and Golden Tate would be one very scary WR tandem

  38. dcapettini says: Mar 14, 2014 4:10 AM

I don’t know why everyone in Baltimore is so hot for Smith. They would be a lot better off with Owen Daniels or some other big, tough guy over the middle. Baltimore needs to rebuild on the fly and bringing in another guy at the end of his career isn’t the way to do it. We have Torrey, Jacoby and Marlon downfield. Pitta can’t do it all himself. Get another tight end.

  39. johnclaytonsponytail says: Mar 14, 2014 4:49 AM

Saints would be the best place for him. If he worried about $$$ then maybe not, but If he wants to win and whip the Panthers like we did to him for many years for a chance at a championship its a no brainer. All depends on whats important to him at this time in his career.

  40. ianwetpantscom says: Mar 14, 2014 5:36 AM

If the price is right… as they say in Baltimore “In Ozzie I Trust.”

    #justsay’n

  41. mungman69 says: Mar 14, 2014 5:48 AM

Whatever happened to the other Steve Smith?

  42. dapollock69 says: Mar 14, 2014 6:41 AM

I heard he punched the dolphin at the Baltimore aquarium after the interview. What a BEAST!

  43. ravenswhat says: Mar 14, 2014 7:02 AM

Welcome to a champion mentality there Stevie.

  44. pilot2011 says: Mar 14, 2014 7:19 AM

He isn’t moving family. His wife is preggers. Almost certain it will be Baltimore, but don’t rule out Pittsburg, possibly Boston. He wants to stay relatively close to Charlotte.

  45. floratiotime says: Mar 14, 2014 7:45 AM

You just knew he couldn’t leave with any class. He’s going to get even with that team that made him rich and famous. Yep … gratitude … the one thing that’s always in short supply.

  46. classyjacklambert says: Mar 14, 2014 7:50 AM

It would be such a disappointment for him if he went to Baltimore. 5’9″ receivers don’t catch a lot of jump balls.

  47. jmblosser82 says: Mar 14, 2014 7:50 AM

So when the Steelers sign an old guy, the front office are fools. But when Baltimore has a chance to sign an old guy its “In Ozzie we trust”. Not saying there isn’t value there but stop the double standards.

  48. beckzhere says: Mar 14, 2014 7:51 AM

He will have no difficulty finding a new team. As a Falcons fan, I’ve seen what he’s capable of for a long time. He’s not the player he once was, but he is still a top 25 WR. Heck, I’d love to see him working the slot between Roody and Julio!!

  49. doctorrustbelt says: Mar 14, 2014 8:28 AM

As usual… cheap Bengals owner mike brown sleeps right through free agency.

  50. deathonwings410 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:35 AM

He’s not leaving BWI without a contract. No way. Ozzie has wanted Steve Smith for the last five years.

  51. pjrhc says: Mar 14, 2014 8:41 AM

One place little mr mouth WON’T land is with the Pack. Too much conflict.

  52. crownofthehelmet says: Mar 14, 2014 8:43 AM

Fits his MO – start at the bottom and work your way up.

  53. toybkshr says: Mar 14, 2014 8:45 AM

Gotta be a lot of teams with real interest.I thot he was at the end, till I saw him “school” Talib in that game against the Pats last season.

Dude still has a lot left.

  54. finsblood13 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:55 AM

Ravens are a 6 win team

  55. panthro79 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:07 AM

Thank you for your service Steve but if you think “Blood and guts” is averaging 50 yards and .25 TD’s per game your mind has declined as much as your game.

  56. pantherfan95 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:10 AM

Hope Smitty goes to a team with a QB that can get him the ball in stride, something he’s never had here. And comes back here and lights us up.
Gettleman is an idiot thought he had been doing some good things up till now. How do you release a potential HOF’r (first for this young franchise) and not have anybody out in free agency that’s not even as good as him. Smitty is now the best available free agent WR.

  57. realskipbayless says: Mar 14, 2014 9:14 AM

Don’t go there Steve. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing him break flacco’s jaw.

  58. panthro79 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:16 AM

Unlike other “Panthers” fans I hope our GM is doing the right thing and HE is proven to be right about Smith. We aren’t used to seeing what a competent FO looks like in Carolina so when one shows up we flip out.

  59. watermelon1 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:17 AM

He’s not going to put a team over the top or anything. Unless it’s a team with a great QB.

So unless he’s going to patriots, packers, or saints… I’m not worried. I excluded broncos because they obviously aren’t signing anymore receivers.

  60. blamatina says: Mar 14, 2014 9:26 AM

Using the Carolina Panthers 2014 Opponents logic; the following teams have the best chance landing Steve Smith:

    Atlanta Falcons
    New Orleans Saints
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    Chicago Bears
    Green Bay Packers
    Detroit Lions
    Minnesota Vikings
    Cleveland Browns
    Baltimore Ravens
    Pittsburgh Steelers
    Cincinnati Bengals
    Seattle Seahawks
    Philadelphia Eagles

  61. lilezy03 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:30 AM

Come to Atlanta and work the slots with Julio and Roddy….

  62. simjef says: Mar 14, 2014 11:45 AM

To Pittsburgh the city of champions, Yo Mama!

  63. bruceroy1 says: Mar 14, 2014 1:57 PM

Don’t do it Ozzie, Carolina knows something others don’t about Smith, it’s not like they got a whole bunch of receivers on their team to replace him, so why they letting him walk so easy?

  64. maxstotalbases says: Mar 14, 2014 3:36 PM

Truth be told as a Steeler fan, and given our situation at receiver right now, we would love to have him. I don’t see it happening though because we can’t afford him. The guys that say we don’t want him are just morons, what team wouldn’t use this guy for another year or two.
