One of the top backs in free agency is visiting a team in need of some backfield punch.

The Browns met with Texans tailback Ben Tate on Thursday night, multiple media outlets reported. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer first reported Tate was visiting the club.

The No. 1 back and No. 40 overall player in PFT’s free agent rankings, the 25-year-old Tate rushed for 771 yards and four TDs on 181 carries for Houston last season. He has gained 4.7 yards per carry in three NFL seasons of play. A second-round pick in 2010, Tate missed his first season with a broken ankle, then primarily backed up Arian Foster thereafter.

Were he to sign with the Browns, Tate would figure to have a prominent role in an offense currently lacking a lead back.
