Saints get fifth-round pick for Sproles

The Patriots cut defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga on Wednesday, but the trade that brought him to New England wound up having a direct impact on Thursday’s trade between the Saints and Eagles.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that the Eagles will send a fifth-round pick to New Orleans in exchange for running back Darren Sproles. The team had two fifth-round picks in this year’s draft after acquiring one in exchange for Sopoaga last October. It’s not clear whether their original pick or New England’s will be heading to the Saints.

It’s not a huge price to pay for the Eagles if Sproles gives them the same kind of production we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him in New Orleans. Given Chip Kelly’s history of getting the most out of his offensive players, it may wind up being a bargain.

Post-trade, the Eagles now have picks in each of the first five rounds and a seventh-rounder. The Saints now have one pick in each of the first four rounds and the sixth round to go with two fifth-round selections.

This pick may end up being our starting Center. Good trade for all parties.

The Steelers signed a S, and then went back to sleep. 5th rounder for Sproles. Wow… another time when the Steelers just asleep at the wheel. I guarantee you that our 4th or 5th rd pick will suck, when we could have had Sproles, who would have been perfect for Ben.

Great trade for Philly. Needed a returner, also gets a good RB. Fits Chip Kelly’s ‘versatility’ philosphy to a T.

Have to believe they’re going to try and trade Bryce Brown to recoup that 5th rounder since Chris Polk’s stock seems to have risen in Kelly’s system. Brown could be a bargain for someone and is definitely worth a 4th or 5th.

He fits perfectly in our scheme. Can’t wait to watch him and Shady

Good trade by the Eagles. A fifth round pick is a cheap price to pay for someone with the potential Sproles brings to the table.

Loved Sproles’ energy as a Saint. What he brought to the run and return game was much needed. That said…

He lost a step last year. Glad we could get anything for him. Sucks that he was unhappy about a trade, but he is going to a playoff contender. Good Luck Darren & thanks!

Good trade with how little Philly gave up for him. Although I wouldn’t expect him to be a top tier return man for you.

Sproles was great in 2011 and 2012, mediocre in 2013. Made far too many fair catches on punt returns that were returnable, and when he did field them got a couple of yards on most of them. His yards per carry dropped off too. he definitely lost a step, will still be a little better than average, but his best days are definitely behind him.

    Saints will regret it.

Sproles could be a third tier returner and it’d be an upgrade

Loved Mighty Mouse but he lost a little step and the Saints are doing the right thing to keep a successful franchise going..

The Chipper must be drooling now as he visualizes his 2014 offense!

Mrs Sproles doesn’t like cold weather. Someone will pay for this insolence.
Thanks Darren. Glad you went to a playoff contender.
Still holds the NFL all-purpose yards record as Saint.
