One of the better defensive tackles still available and a backup quarterback with experience in Ken Whisenhunt’s offense are reportedly slated to visit with the Titans on Thursday.
According to Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean, the Titans are meeting with Raiders defensive tackle Pat Sims and Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst on Thursday.
Sims (6-2, 310) notched a career-best 54 tackles in 16 starts in Oakland’s 4-3 scheme a season ago. An Auburn product, the 28-year-old Sims could be well-suited for Ray Horton’s defense. He is regarded as strong at the point of attack and could conceivably play either end or tackle in a 3-4 front, which Tennessee is expected to use under Horton’s leadership.
Sims is No. 100 on PFT’s list of the top free agents of 2014.
Whitehurst, 31, has spent the last two seasons in San Diego, and he worked with Whisenhunt, now the Titans’ head coach, in 2013. A backup for most of his career, Whitehurst has started just four regular season games.
Were Whitehurst added, the future of Titans backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick could be in some question. Fitzpatrick is slated to make $2.75 million in 2014, per Rotoworld data. Also, he has a $500,000 roster bonus coming, Wyatt reported.
