Vikings add cornerback Derek Cox

Getty Images

A year ago today, cornerback Derek Cox signed a contract with the Chargers, which supposedly paid him $10.25 million guaranteed.  Cut while still $4.25 million short of that amount, Cox celebrated the anniversary by signing with a new team.

Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that Cox has signed a contract with the Vikings.  It’s a one-year deal.

The move comes on the same day the Vikings signed cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.  The Vikings under new coach Mike Zimmer also have re-signed defensive tackle Fred Evans and defensive end Everson Griffen.

The Vikings also reportedly visited with defensive tackle Henry Melton, and they possibly will re-sign defensive tackle Kevin Williams.

Good luck with that. His name in san diego was burnt.

  2. sportsbastard says: Mar 13, 2014 9:21 PM

    They will still stink.

  3. undeadjesus says: Mar 13, 2014 9:21 PM

Good low-risk signing. Chargers defense was garbage last year and could have just been a bad fit for Cox (hehe).

He’s still young and not far removed from his good days in Jacksonville. I like it.

  4. stung4ever1983 says: Mar 13, 2014 9:22 PM

    I like it.

If he plays like he did in Jax, he’s a good corner with the size needed to counter the huge WRs that are in the division. If he sucks, he gets cut again.

    NFC North Champ homeboy!!!

  6. f1restarter says: Mar 13, 2014 9:25 PM

This really smells of desperation. The Vikings have been collecting other teams’ table scraps with a vengeance this year, but none of it will matter.

The Vikings will finish 5-11. They will lose twice, in humiliating fashion, to the far superior Green Bay Packers. Mike Zimmer, like many who came before him, will begin to understand that being a good defensive coordinator does not always translate well to being a good head coach. He’ll be terminated immediately after the 2015 season.

Minnesota can look forward to many, many, many more non-Lombardi seasons.

Horrible signing. The Vikes will be 4th in there division. This guy won’t make my teams 75 man roster. Thevikesaren’tgood.

    omg pat is coming back???

  9. thepftpoet says: Mar 13, 2014 9:29 PM

Another great low risk-high reward type signing by the Vikings.

A cheap one year contract deal for a CB who’s had 13 ints in his career.

He had a down year in SD but was a top tier CB in Jacksonvile.

If any coach can turn him back around- it would be Mike Zimmer.

The Vikings are ahead of every team in the NFL in free agency value signings.

We’re spending our money wisely, with top quality players.

    You mean Kevin, right?

  11. GenXJay says: Mar 13, 2014 9:32 PM

With a last name Cox on defense, ShAaron rodgers will be inevitably flustered.

  12. bleedrangerblue says: Mar 13, 2014 9:33 PM

The Vikings are the best organization ever. Wait hold up….. It’s not my job to post this.

  13. GenXJay says: Mar 13, 2014 9:35 PM

Qb in the first rd is closer to the fold.

  14. conormacleod says: Mar 13, 2014 9:37 PM

  16. 15starr says: Mar 13, 2014 9:37 PM

Wow.. Maybe the Vikings will make the playoffs

  17. coachkilla6 says: Mar 13, 2014 9:47 PM

The Vikings are putting together an awfully good practice squad team here. They’ll be lucky to win 12 games combined in the next 3 seasons.

  18. raiderapologist says: Mar 13, 2014 9:47 PM

Derek Cox. Another reason why the Vikings never win anything. SKOL.

  19. movike says: Mar 13, 2014 9:51 PM

Did you mean Kevin Williams or was saying Pat Williams a joke?

  20. lanzurrah says: Mar 13, 2014 9:52 PM

    The dude is AWFUL.

  21. itsnotforme says: Mar 13, 2014 9:52 PM

Will resign Pat Williams???? I think they mean Kevin Williams

  22. jimmypx says: Mar 13, 2014 9:53 PM

As a Jag fan, I know all about this guy. When he’s healthy, he’s pretty good. Unfortunately that’s rare and he spends much of his time on the IR.

  23. hennessey1200hp says: Mar 13, 2014 9:56 PM

    Looking good Zimmer good job

  24. valhalla13 says: Mar 13, 2014 9:58 PM

    Bye bye Chris Cook

  25. jman14 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:00 PM

Good edit from Pat to Kevin!

This is a good solid depth addition to the team. No risk and creates competition.

  26. vikes89allday says: Mar 13, 2014 10:00 PM

Vikings finally making the right moves

  27. Norseman says: Mar 13, 2014 10:01 PM

OK, not sure what the Vikings see in Cox- hope it was for minimum salary.

  28. duluthvikesfan says: Mar 13, 2014 10:02 PM

Glad to see they are addressing areas of need. Cornerback play is an area that needs all the help the Vikes can get.

  29. theallegedone says: Mar 13, 2014 10:02 PM

I like these moves by the Vikings a lot. Addressing big holes on the defensive side of the ball. With Zimmer and his no nonsense way of coaching defenses, I expect big things from the defense next year. I’m a fan, but I’m also realistic. This could be a very good , fast defense next year. I’d like to add a linebacker with speed. I would love to see the Vikings use the #8 pick on Mack, Moseley or Barr and then get a qb in the 2nd or 3rd round. No need to throw another qb into the fire.

  30. whocareswhatusay says: Mar 13, 2014 10:03 PM

Spielman and Zimmer are doing an excellent job in free agency! Make a couple more signings and then onto the draft!

  31. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:04 PM

so i’m guessing their draft will be heavy on linebackers and offensive guards.

  32. swanderj1 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:04 PM

Hate to say it, being a Lions fan, but the Vikings are making some good moves as of late.

  33. fmc651 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:05 PM

Keep bringing the defense in Zim. Draft Mack at 8 they will not be last next because ponder will not be starting.Draft a qb in the later rounds.

  34. darkneptune73 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:08 PM

So I hear that this dude had a miserable 2013?

  35. rohlo says: Mar 13, 2014 10:14 PM

    derek cox sucks!!!

  36. jazz11001 says: Mar 13, 2014 10:14 PM

Fresh leggs baby. Zim is addressing the Defense and it almost certainly tells me that the first pick is not going to be on a QB. They will address the LB position first. I am still surprised that Greenway hasn’t been cut due to his salary hit this year.

  37. grantsbuds says: Mar 13, 2014 10:21 PM

    Please sign KWill and Melton.
Cox is Zimmers kind of guy.
Anyone else see Zimmer forming a 4-3/3-4 hybrid D?

  38. elliottcovert says: Mar 13, 2014 10:37 PM

He sounds like a great “Zim Guy!”

  39. lnfinite says: Mar 13, 2014 10:37 PM

Another great addition for the Vikings. Let the haters hate…..

  40. whatjusthapped says: Mar 13, 2014 10:39 PM

This signing makes no sense, he was god-awful in 2013 getting benched 3 times in a 4 game span for the Chargers. His nickname is Toast because every time he lined up to cover his WR, he got burned.

So what’s the difference between Cox and Cook?, nothing except for the spelling of the last name on the back of their jersey. Well to be fair to Cox, he probably spends less time in jail if that counts for anything.

  42. leclair63 says: Mar 13, 2014 11:03 PM

Love the series of depth picks. Munnerlyn and Cox both have starter potential and who better than Mike Zimmer to get the best out of them

  43. ragnarthemagnificent says: Mar 13, 2014 11:05 PM

Zimmer is going to make a man out of Derek Cox. Vikes are savaging free agency this year. Johnny football is going to be great on this squad

  45. expertop says: Mar 13, 2014 11:14 PM

And they signed Linval Joseph to a 5-year deal.

  46. packerfansarefat says: Mar 13, 2014 11:18 PM

Derek Cox…..? To be honest, I like a lot of what our GM does…however, it continues to amaze me the lack of urgency he puts into the secondary…last year, year before…and now this year…we sign a bunch of average corners AGAIN!! It’s a passing league and we wonder why our defense is TORCHED on a constant basis….and lord help us if we have one injury. With all this cap space it shocks me we didn’t land on of the bigger names. Can’t wait to see us go up against the receivers in our division with Marcus Sherels, Robinson or a rookie on the opposite our ONE good corner……I can smell the the burn already!

  47. im2fast4you123 says: Mar 13, 2014 11:27 PM

Good signing. He didn’t fit the system the chargers ran. Hope he does well for us.

  48. mtheparrothead says: Mar 13, 2014 11:29 PM

Bwahahaha! Best years with with the jags. #thevikngsblowet

  49. wahoo21 says: Mar 13, 2014 11:29 PM

Cox should get an award for best impersonation of a DB in the NFL.
or get 15-20 years for grand theft ( pro contract ).

  50. boltdaddy says: Mar 13, 2014 11:39 PM

As a Bear fan I am thrilled at the Vike’s signing of Cox who is slow but makes up for it with poor tackling, enjoy!

  51. zimmeriszbomb says: Mar 13, 2014 11:40 PM

Zman strikes again!!! The sound you hear is more gnashing of teeth from across the border.

  52. chargrz says: Mar 14, 2014 12:05 AM

Cox is the absolute worst CB i have ever seen. Not close for 2nd place. Good luck Vikes, you are gonna need it with Cox.

  53. cpo187 says: Mar 14, 2014 12:40 AM

Yay!!! Oh wait, he was rated as one of the worst CB’s in the NFL last year? Dang it…

  54. 33vikes says: Mar 14, 2014 12:47 AM

Come on! Re sign Kevin Williams. Please. I don’t ask for much.

  55. maddenisfordorks says: Mar 14, 2014 12:48 AM

Liked him when he was a Jag … when he was healthy enough to play.

    Good luck Derek …

  56. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Mar 14, 2014 12:52 AM

I had to look this guy up. Sounds like he was pretty good until last year, when he was terrible. Could be the kind of reclamation project Mike Zimmer is famous for. You can never have enough cornerbacks competing in camp.

  57. sdb0ltz says: Mar 14, 2014 1:04 AM

Derek Cox is soooooo terrible! I wouldn’t even practice squad this guy.

He got benched and his replacement was injured right… they put in a guy we got off the streets that was with the team for only 1 week rather than put him back in. If that puts into perspective how “good” he was for us.

He got paid and never showed up, not even a little. He got benched 6 times last year. I couldn’t be happier we cut him.

    Enjoy Vikes.

  58. cluelessdufus says: Mar 14, 2014 2:11 AM

I assume if he makes the roster that he starts across from Rhodes. Adding Munnerlyn in the nickel makes this as a passable pass defense. Still, we have a little money to spend, maybe have some linebackers pay a visit, Brandon Spikes and Daryl Smith are still options to bring in for an interview.

  59. teamnorsecore says: Mar 14, 2014 3:35 AM

Competition for camp. Low risk, one year deal. Hope it works out.

  60. chuckforeman44 says: Mar 14, 2014 6:57 AM

Its nice to see they arent sitting around watching the free agency market. Todays NFL is all about team chemistry. The window for winning a superbowl is small and can close fast. Were definitely rebuilding the defense. Look back at last year and see we lost at least 3 games when the defense couldnt hold a 4th quarter lead. Yet, I still cant help but wonder when Norv gets a shot to add a few pieces. Maybe we try and trade up to get one of the 3 QBs in the draft? I doubt seriously any of them is available at #8. Theres no guarantees they’ll win, but at least I’ll look forward to the season.

  61. scoboscobs says: Mar 14, 2014 7:29 AM

Great move…nothing but upside here. One year “prove it” deal with a guy who’s proven he can be good in the past. If there’s anybody who can help turn his career back around, it’d be Zimmer with Jerry Gray.

  62. dirtyhelmet says: Mar 14, 2014 7:52 AM

I think his last name will make him a very attractive target for Rodgers.

  63. TBaySlim says: Mar 14, 2014 8:23 AM

I certainly like this add from this physical specs (over 6ft.) nice to line him an rhoades on the out side with captain an the inside. hoping they draft another CB. Defensive is looking better. Que the packer rubes for their comment, all i hear is crickets from their side of FA. GBmicky what clever comment do you have today, what piece of old history do u want to quip today, get that dude doc browns time machine all he wants to do is talk about the past

  64. summitmech says: Mar 14, 2014 9:25 AM

The Vikings had me getting worried. No longer. Very happy with the work being done so far. This will really give the Vikes a good opportunity to go draft impact players instead of just trying to fill holes. Starting QB (for now) – check, D-line – check, cornerback – check. And they brought back jasper Brinkley, so really we’ve got a nice linebacker corps now too.

    Things are lookin up!

  65. spkriegs says: Mar 14, 2014 10:10 AM

Good moves so far, but this is a work in progress for sure. I hope the Vikings draft a defensive starter in the 1st round, McCarron in the 2nd, and mostly defense the rest of the way, with the exception of an OL or two. The the Vikes can find a way to stop people, Norv will be able to coax enough out of that offense to sneak into the playoffs.

  66. purpleguy says: Mar 14, 2014 11:47 AM

I would rather they just re-signed Cook and have him work/develop with Zimmer and Gray, but at least they’re adding depth.

  67. randallwoodfield says: Mar 14, 2014 12:29 PM

He showed promise while in Jacksonville. I think they just want to bring him into camp and see if his career is salvageable. If not, he’ll probably be a camp cut. That’s the reason for the 1 year contract, he needs to prove he deserves to be on the team.

  68. khmer379 says: Mar 14, 2014 12:53 PM

He can’t be worse then Cook just saying

  69. jaialaicharger says: Mar 14, 2014 1:47 PM

Sorry to hear this Vikes… Courtney Cox plays better man to man than this guy does.

  70. ragnarthegreat says: Mar 14, 2014 2:58 PM

If you listen closely you can hear Chris Cook packing.

  71. sdcharger4life says: Mar 14, 2014 5:36 PM

I cannot believe how many SKOL fans are looking at this as a “great” addition!?!? The guy couldn’t cover the slowest guy on the opposing team last year. Not a Vikings fan but I hope this guy is cut in training camp, he’s about the worst i’ve ever seen.

If he’s only getting $1 for one year, it’s 99 cents too much!!
