49ers sign Chris Cook

The 49ers found themselves a bit thin at cornerback with Carlos Rogers released and Tarell Brown a free agent, but things are a bit rounder with word that Chris Cook has signed with the team.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the team has reached agreement with the former Viking on a one-year deal.

Cook is 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds with long arms, which gives the 49ers the big corner that they’ve been looking for this offseason. Cook also has good speed, which made him a second-round pick in 2010, but he never put things together on the field for the Vikings. Cook started 29 games over his four years in Minnesota without making an interception and also got in trouble off the field that made his tenure even rockier.

The Niners are obviously betting that Cook’s physical gifts can be turned into something more valuable on the field. It’s not likely to cost them a big chunk of money to make that bet and they could still look for other options to go with Tramaine Brock, Eric Wright and Chris Culliver.

  1. Our offseason sucks. This guy has never even intercepted a pass. Gabbert, Martin, now this dude?? I hope they know what they are doing. Hopefully they will sign Edelman or Nicks, but I could see them signing Joe Webb or some geek off the street the way this offseason has been.

  2. While the 49’ers easily have enough talent to be one of the better teams this upcoming season, they’re offseason has been very questionable.. Gabbert is one of the worst QB’s in the league, Jon Martin is an average at best tackle that can’t handle a NFL locker room. Chris Cook is GARBAGE, he was so bad as a viking.

  3. How would you know if Chris Cook has good speed? I never once saw him chase down any of the 1000 guys that CONSTANTLY got past him.

  4. This is so funny! Honestly, I was still getting over laughing about Gabbert/Martin trades. The comedy continues…

Now 49ers bring on Chris Cook who looked flat out terrible on a bad secondary? Shaping up to be the worst secondary in the NFC West- good job Balkee.

  5. People hating on this acquisition are being illogical. He’s a big, solid corner with high upside and low risk. I was really hoping the Bears would get this guy if we didn’t get Tillman back.

He’s not coming off a good year, obviously, or his value would be higher, but he has produced in the past. INTs are not at all the only indicator of production.

All in all, good pickup 49ers. Fans of the team should be happy.

  6. A low risk, medium reward type of signing. They’re obviously not going to sign him for a lot of money, and if he doesn’t perform, he’ll be cut after camp. Highly doubtful that he’ll take the place of someone more talented or higher priced.

  7. In other news:

The Cleveland Browns have scheduled a press conference to reveal their 2015 Head Coach.

  8. LOL

Some of you people don’t have a clue. I doubt this dude it cracks the 53 man roster.

Everyone complaining about Gabbert, Martin, Cook etc lol like any of these dudes even play. Niners basically had 1 spot to fill and that was Bethea

    Chill out.

  9. Another under the radar signing by Baalke. I remember when we signed Carlos Rodgers and how everyone laughed. Well he went on to have 6 picks hos first season with the team. I also recall the same thing with the Glen Dorsey contract and he had a great year. Being on a great team raises your level of play. Not to mention the Niners have a great coaching staff.

  10. #1 example of a guy who needed a change of scenery. Seemed to have all the tools but could never make a play of consequence. As they say on the Sopranos, “It’s time for you to go”.

  11. Gabbert, Martin and Cook. All low risk moves for depth. There all making peanuts financially. I don’t see what the fuss is all about.

  12. My two teams are the Vikings and 49ers. As a Vikings fan I rejoice, as this loser is gone. As a 49er fan I hope he does not make the team. He is a woman beater and has no coverage skills what so ever..

  13. The Vikings secondary has been garbage since he came in the league maybe its the coaching staff that was in place until this year, Also hard to produce when guarding Megatron, Marshall, Jeffries, Cobb, and Nelson twice a year

  14. Doesn’t mean he’s making the team but ya I don’t get it. Someone has a long arm fetish.

I think you meant to say low upside and high risk.

  16. Calm down, they’re not expecting this guy to replace anyone. It’s a one year (hopefully extremely cheap) deal. He’ll be camp competition, and if he’s as bad as everyone says he is, will get cut.

  17. I guarantee you, Chris Cook will not pick off a pass in training camp down there, much less if he makes it to the main roster.

Good luck dealing with that troublemaker, San Fran.

  18. U haters are funny we signed asamaugh last yr and how many games did he play? cook is a player to back up…We all ready have starting cbs…lol …..;T brock and culliver…wright…we have 12 draft pics…..we will draft a cb with atleast 2 pics

  19. I’m willing to bet not half the people on this forum knew donte whitner or Carlos Rogers before we got them in 2011 n made them pro bowlers

  20. Seahawks will reign supreme. The north Mexico whiners are done and over with. This will be the year everything falls apart. Gore will finally hit the wall, fAlldown Smith will get hooked on purple drank, CK7 will test positive for ped use ( as a hs sr he was 6-4 175lbs and ran the 40 in 5.0) and tear a bicep while flexing in front of the mirror. Vernon Davis will suffer from severe and mysterious menstral cramps just before Seahawk games, as is tradition. And Jim Harbaugh will continue to make a Public specticle of himself every Sunday. Hawkstradamus has fortold it, and so it shal be.

  21. Hey Morons,
These guys aren’t even going to be active on gameday for the Niners. Relax, their roster is LOADED! Harbaugh is a football GOD and will kick the tires on physical tools to see if he can get them to reach their potential, just like he did with Alex Smith, Ted Ginn, Carlos Rogers, Donte Whitner, the list goes on and on. Great teams never win free agency, they win the draft, and nobody has been better than the Niners in the draft.

  22. As a 49ers fan, can’t wait for him to be cut. Both he and Eric Wright I could be without. I don’t want the 49ers to overspend in free agency, but come on Tarell Brown is better than both these corners combined, and Brown isn’t special.

  23. I think all of you are being overly critical with the 49ers offseason moves so far..

Gabbert… it’s not like this guy is the projected starting QB.. he’s backup, and in that regard, not any worse than Colt McCoy last year.. and it only cost a 6th rounder. you guys are treating this like it was supposed to be their major move… it’s a backup QB.. chill out!

Same goes with Martin.. it was a conditional 7th rounder for the chance to see how good this guy could be as a BACKUP on the OL.

  24. GM/Coach, sit down and talk to this guy…I think he can help…..
There are a lot worse QBs on NFL rosters that has never had the success Vince Young has had …(NFL Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and Mobility). Vince has a career winning record of 31-19…
I hope he gets another chance even if it’s third string…

  25. First they sign Gabbert, and now Cook. Is this Harbaugh’s way of getting even with the 49ers for the entire coaching trade to the Browns that didn’t happen?? Make the 49er self destruct with bad players???

  26. Please correct me if, repeat if, I am wrong. I vaguely recall hearing a similar hysterical outburst when Baalke grabbed Carlos “He who can’t catch and/or hold a basket of footballs” Rogers. And how did that turn out again? That’s what I thought. Knock the Niners brain-trust all you want now, then watch them AGAIN win the NFC West Division, and go on to ……………..

  27. I absolutely roll on the floor laughing at the critics of the Niners offseason. We traded picks that were extremely unlikely to even make the practice squad for former 1st and 2nd round talent.

We signed Bathea who is very similar to Whitner, cept he’s a slight upgrade and is costing the team 1/4 th of the contract Whitner got from the Browns. Signed a camp competition CB to the smallest contract possible with no penalty for outright cutting him prior to the season.

Resigned the important people we needed to right away, let those who were no longer going to be starters on the team go, and increased our total available cap space. Did not overpay a single FA, and contrary got every one of them on a deal and in doing so set the team up for continued long term success.

    Get informed.

  28. I’m at a loss. First Gabbert and then Martin
get picked up in trades. Hopefully Gabbert never makes it out of the tunnel. Then you put whatever cohesion you have left at risk by trading for Martin. Then you sign Cook, I Guy I doubt can catch a pass in practice. This draft better be good or my niners or their on the outside looking in come playoff time.

  29. Why are people so stupid… Gabbert, cook, and marin will most likely not start. The niners have nothing invested in them and are seeing if they can fix whats wrong.. Why do people assume if you sign someone they have to start.. We have depth.. We have a starter already at every position these guys are projects. they work they work they don’t they don’t… No big deal. But inner fans mocking this deal are the same fans who bitched about drafting aldon smith… bitched about resigning smith… Bitched about starting kaep.. I could go on and on.. stop doubting the niners front office.

    Bandwagon much?

  31. To all Vikings fans…. This should be a lesson for you and every other NFL team with no playoff hopes. The difference between a contender and you?…. A.) Niners didn’t waste a 2nd round pick on this guy. B.). We just signed him to low risk/ reward almost league minimum contract. C.) Niners are not dumb enough to try and make this a guy their starter for 4 years. Oh and D.) He just joined one of the top 5 Defenses in the NFL not the bottom 5…,.. Good luck with your 2014 season….

  32. If those flinging arrows at this move did even a modicum of research, they would see that if, here I go again, repeat if, they would see that the best Cook could do to get on the Niners roster is to wind up being an addition to our depth at Safety – and an “in a pinch” corner.

  33. Bargain basement acquistion for insurance against Brown leaving. Should cost them less than $1 mil and have no effect on their ability to pursue another free agent corner and a wide receiver. Walter Thurmond may be asking too much money.

  34. Get a clue people . . . off season rosters can hold 90 . . . NINETY players. If he makes the final 53 I’d be shocked. He’s a camp body with potential upside. Evidently a lot of Redskin fans used to building through free agency like to blather on here.

  35. I see the same haters/uneducated people on 49er threads everyday.

Don’t YOU people have something else better to do? Heck…Step away from the keyboard and clean your room. Maybe get a job? How about a LIFE?

Anyhow, all these moves except for Bethea are depth moves with very minimal risk with the possibility of rewards. Smart organizations make these kind of moves and build through the draft.

  36. Getting a former first round pick like Martin is a steal. This guy is not the bully. He is the victim of bullying. The Niners get along with each other in the locker room and the players treat each other like brothers. He will fit right in.

  37. I’ll just simply say Good Luck. He was in MN as a zone defense type of player. I’m not sure what the 49er’s are. He is ok against the run.

    ______

I don’t remember the Vikings making him an offer.
    ———————————-

You’re right, they let him walk. He wanted to stay in Minnesota and play for Zimmer, but once he pissed off Zimmer via Twitter, he had no chance of coming back to Minnesota. But, facts never mattered to extra chromosome carrying dolts like 13x.

  39. Last time I check we beat the 49ers with ponder and that so kalled bottom 5 defense get your fact straight in the last several years so kalm down with that nonsense were not the packers you know lol

  40. Too bad. I used to really enjoy watching Rodgers carve that guy up. Oh we’ll, I’m sure the Vikes will replace him with some other teams hack-castoff. That is what they do and why they never have and never will win a championship. Vikings are the ultimate dynasty of losers

  41. First of all, good riddance to bad rubbish. The guy gave up more touchdowns than anyone could imagine. And yet, he never full held himself accountable for his bad playing (then again, neither did Frazier). If I were a GM, I wouldn’t take a chance on this guy even if I was trying to get my coach fired.

    —————-

Except absolutely no scouts, websites, or anyone else had Bethea as an upgrade over Whitner. This site had him well below Whitner in their free agent rankings, and PFF had Bethea as one of the worst safeties in the league last year (among the free agents for this year), while Whitner was one of the best. That’s not to say that Whitner isn’t over-rated, because I certainly think he is. But Bethea just isn’t good, period.

The only people saying Bethea is an upgrade are the fans of the team that signed him. Not exactly an objective source.

  43. LOL. Sorry 49ers fans. You can try to justify this signing all you want, buts it’s a HORRIBLE signing. As a Vikes fan I can tell you Cooke has ZERO ball skills. He can be in perfect position and he still won’t make the play. Oh, and he’s not in perfect position all that often. I can guarantee you this, not ONE SINGLE VIKES FAN is sad to see him go. He’s all yours:-)

  44. i have honestly seen few DBs that have consistently played as poorly as cookie. he was the classic example of a guy that every second you thought he might not be THAT bad he instantly proved you wrong.

  45. Josh Alper forgot to add the whole injury-riddled-career thing too.

And the little- never looks for the ball, zero ball skills tidbit as well.

9er fans- there is a very good reason the Vikings let him walk. We need CBs. Badly. And we still let him walk. Something to think about.

  46. For some reason I was expecting for us to lose Tarrell Brown. I never read or heard about the Niners having any interest about keeping him around. This Chris Cook sounds like he might have the ability to do something, but this is not the player I was looking to replace Tarrell Brown. We need to get Walter Thurmond signed quick.

  47. We signed Bathea who is very similar to Whitner, cept he’s a slight upgrade and is costing the team 1/4 th of the contract Whitner got from the Browns.

Except ESPN which has him graded as an A and Whitner a B -….FAIL.

  48. “Except ESPN which has him graded as an A and Whitner a B -….FAIL.”
    ——–

Well, I just looked at that list, and you are correct.

However, they also have Tracy Porter and Tarell Brown as better CBs than Darrell Revis and Vontae Davis.

In other words, ESPN, as always, is absolutely terrible.

  49. 9ers have been the best team thus far in the off season by miles.

Three first round talent players in Gabbert, Martin, and Cook, for next to nothing in terms of assets or cap room. Plus they’re all young, ascending players who were stifled in bad situations.

No downside, and potentially huge upside.

  50. As a Hawks fan, I hope 49ers aren’t serious and entering 2014 with that backfield….after all, I want those games between Seahawks/49ers to be meaningful.

  51. Gabbert might have just needed a change of scenery. He has noone to throw to and an aweful offensive line. He seemed to have lost his confidence. A good QB coach and a decent line will do him wonders. Most of you doorknobs look at fantasy numbers and nothing else.

  52. Let’s see….zero career interceptions, constantly injured, and likes to beat up women. Great signing Niners. So glad he is out of Minnesota, but must admit with his resume I thought Green Bay would have been a better fit. Addition by subtraction for the Vikes.

  53. Low risk, high reward. That describes most of the moves by the 49ers so far. That’s what you do when you are in a position of power. Martin is a guy who could prove to be very valuable if he gets his act together. Cook is large for a DB with long arms and as the 49ers proved with guys like Whitner and Carlos Rogers, they truly can revive his career. And for anyone laughing at Gabbert, I have 2 words for you: Alex. Smith.

  54. This is one Cook you want to keep out of the kitchen unless you’re making bananas Foster. Getting burned seems to be his specialty. Zing!

  55. just dont let cook near the san fran females . hook him up with one of your many san fran bois . least they can punch back . cook was burned too many time in minn the old saying toast . doubt he makes the 53 squad

  56. All hyperbole and jokes aside, Cook’s not a completely, god-awful DB in coverage. And because of his size, he can play against larger wideouts, getting a couple pass breakups here and there. (I specifically remember one break up against Megatron his rookie season.)

However, he absolutely can not stay on the field and does not EVER make splash plays. No INTs, FFs, or FRs. He as one career sack, never had more than 41 tackles, and only played in 34 of 64 career games.

Wish him the best, but as a second round pick with his physical stature, he’s been nothing short of disappointing.

  57. niether the 49ers or the Seahawks have very good scouts over here in Minny. you guys always pay the worst former vikes (usually seattle, except percy. percys the man.)

  58. Just because some loser franchise drafts a guy in the 2nd round doesn’t mean he has 2nd round talent.

This guy has zero talent and has multiple arrests while in the NFL. Not being on the field on game day because he was in jail made the vikings coaching staff happy and they paid him the rest of the season without any suspension just asked him to stay away from the team.

Even at the veteran minimum the guy is a waste of an offseason roster spot.

As for Gabbert, we remember his predraft admissions and Martin walked out on his team and teammates.

Better to sign a rookie that might be trained to be a good player than sign proven poor performers with attitude problems.

  59. Just another example of the ineptitude of the Viking’s front office. Not only was Chris Cook a 2nd round draft choice, he was a high second round draft pick (#34 overall). He beats his girlfriend for making a cell phone call is all you need to know about his character. The fact that he can’t play was somewhat hidden when he was surrounded by other Vikings but the 49ers will soon find that out, in spades.

  60. A lot of times he was in position, he just could never seem to make the play, poor ball skills and just an average tackler for his size.

Maybe if you plug him into the 49ers defense, he will finally be somewhat productive

  61. He will never make the 53 man roster! He was the worst corner in an abysmal secondary last year. I hope he is cut and never resigns anywhere in the league again… well then again….. he could sign and start for Green Bay, Detroit, or Chicago and that would be fine with me, but I don’t think they would make that mistake! Rats!
