As expected, the Titans part ways with Ryan Fitzpatrick

AP

The Titans made the move Friday that was anticipated when they signed quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.

Actually, the one anticipated from the moment their last backup signed his last contract.

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean, the Titans have informed Ryan Fitzpatrick of his release.

Fitzpatrick had a $500,000 roster bonus and a $2.75 million base salary coming, and with Whitehurst on hand to hold the clipboard (and heal the infirm of Nashville), he was redundant.

Given the game of backup quarterback musical chairs going on, there are places for Fitzpatrick to land. He’s been acceptable at times, which frankly makes him better than some of the other guys getting work that way.

  1. Fits played for my Bills and when he had time/blocking he was pretty good. When he does not have much time he struggles like most of the non elite QB’s in the NFL……

  2. He’s one of the smartest players in the NFL–except where making spontaneous decisions is concerned. If he threw smarter (not better!), he’d not only be a much better backup, he could be a starting QB for several teams.

  3. A very solid backup guy, even a fairly capable mid-level starter. Have never fully understood why he has at times looked very good, and at other times like a turnover machine? I suppose it has to do with his overall skill set and who he’s playing for and against at the time.
At the right price, he’s one of the very best backup QB’s in the NFL. Worth a decent contract.

  4. I remember Fitz having one good game at home when he torched the Chiefs. Final score was like 43- 7 or something like that. He hadn’t done anything before that and hasn’t done anything since. I would say he has turned one game into a pretty paycheck.

  5. Don’t NFL rules dictate that he automatically becomes a Viking now?

  6. This could come back to haunt them with the Glass Locker at the helm.

I would feel better about RF being the next man up compared to Whitehurst.

  7. What team in their right mind cuts RF to bring in Clipboard Jesus, and for more money? The guy has proved he is not and does not want to be a starter. During the strike, Hasselbeck who was just cut by Seattle was out working with the players while CBJ waa at home surfing. Titan fans, you better hope Jake stays healthy, it is hard to throw with a clipboard attached to your hand.

  8. I would gladly welcome Fitzpatrick back to Buffalo as a backup QB. You can say what you want about Fitz, but you can’t say he isn’t a good backup plan. Many times throughout his career Ryan Fitzpatrick has come in with no notification and led his team to a win. Whether they were down by 21 or up by 21, he has to be one of the better toss him in quarterbacks in the league. Not a starter, but a very good backup.

  9. I’m glad he’s gone. Whenever he had a bad game he said his play was unacceptable but at the same time he seemed so at peace with himself as he said it…I guess that happens when you’ve already gotten a massive chunk of money from a former team and you’re basically chuckin’ the ball around to pad your income.

RF didn’t make it through Harvard cause he’s dumb.

  10. Ruston Webster must really believe Clipboard Jesus is going to motivate Jake not to get injured this year. We probably could have gotten Vick for his price.

  11. Fitzpatrick looked bad when he became overconfident. That is, when he thought that he was better than his actual talent, and tried to force throws that he had no business making. Otherwise a competent backup.

  12. I could see this move if Whitehurst was a lot cheaper. But he’s definitely not better, especially for that price. KW’s decisions are already scaring me. I don’t think he knows what he’s doing.

  13. This makes no damn sense at all!!! I can see someone’s argument about Fitzpatrick, my opinion is that he was the reason why the Titans lost at least 2-3 games last yr with throwing INT’s at the end of games, but he still made a lot of good plays as well. Him and Wright were really starting to click. I can take the titans getting rid of him but to bring in Whitehurst??? For 2 yrs and 8mil?? Really titans? Ruston and Whistenhunt?? What the hell we you two thinking?? You both should know that (hurt) Locker has never played an entire season. Hell he can’t even get to mid-season without getting hurt, and you guys bring in this clown??? All I got to say is we better at least draft a decent QB in this draft.. God please help the titans this yr because it could be a long season. Sooner than later…
