B.J. Raji remains in Green Bay

B.J. Raji will remain with the only team he’s ever played for.

Raji, the free agent defensive lineman who has spent his entire five-year career in Green Bay, has agreed to a new contract with the Packers. It’s a one-year deal for $4 million, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Last year Raji started all 16 games for the Packers, and he’s started all but two over the last four years. The Packers took Raji with the ninth overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

Raji was the No. 26 player in our Free Agent Hot 100, and as of early this afternoon he was the fourth-best player available among those who hadn’t signed. Now he’s not available any longer, and he’ll return to Green Bay.

Drat, one less chance for the Vikings NFC North worst defense to improve.

Bummed. He’s good and I am a Lions fan. Good (re-)signing by the Pack. Le sigh.

Good for him. As a Lions fan he’s a very worthy opponent.

  11. teal379 says: Mar 14, 2014 3:38 PM

    Durable and agile big man.

Doesn’t make the Packers better – UNLESS they move him to NT and keep him there.

Ambivalent about him coming back but it does help TT with options come draft time.

Wooohooo, another cog in the 31st ranked defense resigns with the Packers……

  13. yourfavoriteteamstinks says: Mar 14, 2014 3:39 PM

With Raji and Shields both back the Packers should be almost as good as last year!

Good now can we just resign EDS & Jermike.

  17. shaggytoodle says: Mar 14, 2014 3:40 PM

Team friendly contract, only for a year. I like it, hopefully he realizes that to the big contract he was hoping to, he will need to show people he is worth it.

  18. longtimefanhtr says: Mar 14, 2014 3:41 PM

I won’t do back flips over this. The guy needs to find a motor. And Ted keeps yet more of the players on last years bad defense.

  20. jwcarlson says: Mar 14, 2014 3:42 PM

I always laugh at the crazy contract numbers “leaked” to have been offered to Packer free agents.

A couple of years ago there was, I think, a $10MM/year offer said to have been offered to Greg Jennings which he declined.

Raji was supposedly offered an $8MM/year contract and also declined.

These offers are fabricated… either by the team, the player’s agent, or the media.

  21. floriojr says: Mar 14, 2014 3:43 PM

when to turn down that bigger deal you fat tub of nothingness.. another year with no sacks and grading out as one of the worst DT’s in the NFL.

  22. imbetteratlifethanyou says: Mar 14, 2014 3:45 PM

Just b/c you don’t get sacks doesn’t mean you don’t have impact. Maybe watch a football game every once in awhile.

  24. whatjusthapped says: Mar 14, 2014 3:48 PM

Its not only who you sign, its how much are they signed for? He’s played out of his natural position for 2 years now so the move back to NT should help.

He’s a good character guy who doesn’t beat his girlfriend so that might explain why the Vikings didn’t chase him.

  25. believeland2014 says: Mar 14, 2014 3:49 PM

Bad Move for Raji, he could’ve joined the dynasty that is becoming in Cleveland.

  26. ariani1985 says: Mar 14, 2014 3:51 PM

Lol, this should solve their problems! Well, not like this defense can get any worse?

  27. deltaoracle says: Mar 14, 2014 3:52 PM

He should be able to help the Pack extend their dominance (7-1-1 during last four seasons) over the Purple Pushovers.
Smart move by Thompson, got him relatively cheap and now doesn’t have to panic during the draft.

  28. ✦ Pittsburgh is the City of Champions ✦ says: Mar 14, 2014 3:52 PM

LOL @ 12 tackles last year.

  29. shaggytoodle says: Mar 14, 2014 3:53 PM

The year he helped GB win he had an amazing year. He also had the help of Cullen Jenkins on that line, and he was very important on that D.

If the Packers can get one solid skilled DE or DT can play Raji either and I mean 3-4 DE 300 LBs with some push and quick feet, it will help this defense immensely.

  30. claymatthewscromagnonforehead says: Mar 14, 2014 3:54 PM

My fondest BJ Raji memory is the last regular season game of 2012 when in a game where Adrian Peterson rushed for 200 some yards and almost broke Eric Dickerson’s record, Raji happened to stop him for no gain once or twice and did the finger wave. “No no no.” Classless. Hapless.

  31. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Mar 14, 2014 3:56 PM

  34. burningrangers says: Mar 14, 2014 3:59 PM

A put up or shut up deal for Raji. Assuming he’s the guy at NT if Pickett isn’t retained, if he can’t produce at his natural position, they can let him walk next offseason.

  35. rbirving says: Mar 14, 2014 3:59 PM

not a good FA year for DLine, from the players perspective. Too many good ones available this year and Raji had a mediocre year, at best. This is a good deal for him. 4mil for one year, hard not to have a better year and hit FA again next year when maybe not so many on the market.

  36. JMClarkent says: Mar 14, 2014 4:00 PM

  43. vargavarga says: Mar 14, 2014 4:07 PM

Ya and the plan is for him to sign tomorrow, EDS on Sunday, Findley on Monday and Jolly on Tuesday so Ted doesn’t embarass himself cause not one other team wanted any of these guys and there our starters. I hope the team struggles to get to 6-10.

  47. pftfanatic says: Mar 14, 2014 4:11 PM

  49. irishstout says: Mar 14, 2014 4:13 PM

Fellow Packers Fans, something strange has happened and this thread made me realize it. No, really, it’s bizarre. Are you sitting down?

Lions fans are the other classy group in the North. Really, think about it. When was the last time you were trolled by a Lions fan the way you get trolled by Vikings fans? (Bears fans troll too now and then, but no one trolls like Vikings fans.) But Lions fans on these boards seem like people who just want their team to be good, and because of that they realistically assess other teams instead of trolling them.

Weird. Unexpected. Maybe Jim Schwartz really was the worst part of that team.

  50. zimaman says: Mar 14, 2014 4:14 PM

so explain to me how Big Vince Wilfork thinks he is going be playing on one leg for half a year and then get the Patriots to pay 11 million

Raji is in his prime and only getting 4 million

Vince will definitely regret not making a deal and staying Pat. He is not even going to get 4 million if that’s what Raji got. Wake up and spell the coffee Big Guy

  51. glastron1 says: Mar 14, 2014 4:18 PM

He better play a hell of a lot better than he did the last two years

  52. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Mar 14, 2014 4:19 PM

So let me get this straight. This guy has been playing out of position the last two years, and that’s the reason he’s been utterly terrible? What does that say about the coaching staff?

  53. dethsupport says: Mar 14, 2014 4:20 PM

Packer fans love Raji, they see themselves in his beauty.

  54. vargavarga says: Mar 14, 2014 4:23 PM

  57. sconnyslovethemsomecousins says: Mar 14, 2014 4:31 PM

When they finally realize he isn’t worth having out on the field (I’m guessing first half of game 1)…the plan is to shift his services over to their cheer leading squad to help improve their looks, and he’ll be their new top of their pyramid formations.

  58. randallwoodfield says: Mar 14, 2014 4:32 PM

    2013 Raji stats – 16 games started 13 tackles 6 assists.
Bahahahahahahahahahaha! No wonder nobody else wanted him. Moving him to NT, maybe he can double his insane tackling numbers. At least average one per game. His best season was 29 tackles. Picked #9, five seasons ago and he still can’t average 1.5 tackles a game.

  59. axespray says: Mar 14, 2014 4:34 PM

Well he’s usually awesome during “Even” numbered years (2010 and 2012) – so I’m alright with this deal.

It’s the odd numbered years (2009, 2011 and 2013) when he sucks.

  60. longtimefanhtr says: Mar 14, 2014 4:41 PM

    EDS signed with Tampa Bay.

  61. pftking says: Mar 14, 2014 4:42 PM

Well duh, no one wanted him. He had no other options then to stick with his old team.

  62. themackstrong says: Mar 14, 2014 4:49 PM

To Patriot fans looking at this contract and saying future HOF Wilfork needs to eat some minimum deal ask Packer fan in the know how Raji played in a contract year?

The guy has no-sacks in two years after flashing a little in their Super Bowl winning year. I couldn’t tell you where Green Bay ranked in defense but I bet it would be the bottom 1/3. Big Vince eats up 2 gaps every game and people still can’t run it up the gut versus the Pats. Be mad about Revis getting 12 mill this year and maybe 20 million next year.

  63. floriojr says: Mar 14, 2014 4:51 PM

btw im not a Viking fan and I have posted many PRO GB coments but Raji is terrible and was one of the worst DL in the game.

Raji has zero sacks over his last 39 games (including playoffs), has zero forced fumbles in his five-year career and graded out dead last against the run among 3-4 ends in PFF’s 2013 grades. He’s expected to move to nose tackle this season.

  64. vik3z says: Mar 14, 2014 4:51 PM

this guy hasnt had a sack in over 2 season and hasnt forced a fumble in his 5 year career.

this is how the green bay packers use a top 10 selection… pathetic

  65. contra74 says: Mar 14, 2014 4:58 PM

  67. taintedsaints2009 says: Mar 14, 2014 5:09 PM

  68. jimmysee says: Mar 14, 2014 5:11 PM

    Absolutely hilarious!

To the Vikings fans around here, every player the Packers re-sign is worthless; every player who departs is a hall of famer!

Truly guys — get a life.

Who wins the division every year?

  69. purplepanteez says: Mar 14, 2014 5:11 PM

    Spielman! C’mon man!

Packers castoffs getting signed… by someone who ain’t you.

What do you think you’re getting paid for?

It ain’t to win championships… obviously. But at the very least, sign some former Packers so you can trot ’em out there and make the Division and Super Bowl winning Packers feel bad. You know… ex-girlfriend syndrome. It’s the only tool in our toolbox.

    Otherwise, what’s the point?

  70. iluvbears says: Mar 14, 2014 5:13 PM

  71. milwaukeeguy says: Mar 14, 2014 5:36 PM

Good signing. Have the incentive of another contract year but also playing at NT where he is more effective. Packers D-Line will probably have 2 new starters at end in Jones and maybe Boyd with Raji at nose. Unless of course they lose about four starters on Family Scrimmage night.

Team friendly contract, only for a year. I like it, hopefully he realizes that to the big contract he was hoping to, he will need to show people he is worth it.

Ah last year was his contract year. That’s the year your supposed to show what you got. He had zero sacks, a handful of tackles and played part time. Not exactly a stellar performance. Note” Not of the 31 other teams showed any interest at all in him and he is young yet.

  79. shaggytoodle says: Mar 14, 2014 7:01 PM

If you turn down a contract, because you feel that your going to get a big pay day, and you come up short. I hope it wakes you up a bit and makes you play with a chip on your shoulder. While he isn’t as effective as he once was, neither is anyone else on that defensive line.

You guys can say what you like about him, but he was key in GBs transition from the 4-3 to 3-4, and winning the SB a couple years ago, he is only going to take up 3% of the Salary cap.

  80. aa1829 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:40 PM

Got him on the cheap, after stupidly offering him 8M earlier. The move to NT, and a second contract year when he won’t want to fail again should be good incentive. Just do your job BJ, now or never.

  81. filthymcnasty1 says: Mar 15, 2014 8:48 PM
