Buccaneers sign Packers lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith

The Buccaneers continued their onslaught on the free agent market, as they try to rebuild an offensive line taken apart piece by piece.

The latest addition was Packers free agent offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith, the team announced Friday afternoon.

While he won’t have to worry about being stomped by Ndamukong Suh twice a year, he will have to buy a new wardrobe after changing bays.

Dietrich-Smith can play either inside position, and the Bucs still have holes across the line. Signing left tackle Anthony Collins was a good start, but they released veteran guard Davin Joseph and tackle Donald Penn and there are still questions about the future of Carl Nicks.

  1. I was hoping he would could back. I appreciate what he did in GB and good luck in TB.

I wonder what TTs plan is for Center. Is he drafting one, or is the guy all ready on the roster. A lot of linemen they that were hurt last season were OTs, so I am not sure about them jumping inside.

  2. The new wardrobe he’ll have to wear over his pads and on his head in Tampa was revealed recently.

He might want to consider taking up tennis.

  3. Well I won’t lie I hoped GB would retain him.
I know they’re high on Tretter, but they also need to find someone to regularly back up the Center position. The way that three linemen would have to shift around when EDS went down last season was almost as bad as the initial lack of competent backup for Rodgers. Should be able to get a decent Center in third or fourth of the draft; better do it.

  4. He goes from a team that makes the playoffs every year he was there to a team that will probably never make the playoffs. He might have well signed with the Vikings since they always overpay their FA’s.

  5. Welp, that sucks. I really hoped we’d be able to keep EDS, congrats Bucs he’s a great player. But the Packers would have to pay a 7% premium (Florida doesn’t have a state income tax, but Wisconsin’s is 7%) and you have the weather factor so I get why we couldn’t outbid Tampa.

We’ll either find someone in the draft or convert an existing lineman.

  6. Let’s see….

Keep an overpriced money grubbing CB

    OR

    Get:
    New C
    New LT
    New NT
    DE that actually gets sacks
    Pro Bowl Cover Corner
    QB that isn’t Glennon
    TE that doesn’t suck

    Easy decision.

Slowly cleaning the Schiano and Raheem stench off of the Bucs.

Get ready, NFL. The Bucs are coming.

  7. JC Tretter, looks like you’re up next young man, let’s see what you got. He’s a Cornell kid so I’m guessing he’ll have the mental part down. As for EDS, congratulations on the contract, not bad for an UFA. Best of luck.

  8. For all of you talking about going to nicer weather..I would rather play in the frozen tundra then be exposed to MRSA.

  9. EDS goes Tampa? 4 years, $14M? Damn, I’m surprised the Vikings didn’t throw $30 or 40 million at him, what’s wrong with Spielman?

  10. Why would he be jealous. Sullivan is a top 5 center. Whereas…some 3rd rate UDFA center will start this year on the sieve that is the Packer OL..Linval Joseph..Meet. TJ Lang…..lol

  11. Oh man. The Pack lose arguably their most solid Offensive lineman, off of what was already a pretty mediocre pass protection? No biggie. I heard Rodgers prefers to line up behind his “personal assistant” these days anyway…

G/C Zuttah will be available soon.

  13. I head that EDS sweats profusely. There may be a lot of butt snap fumbles down in that hot humid climate. Nothing a QB likes more than a wet slimy pigskin to throw.

  14. Yeah. The only problem is that he was never “stomped” by Suh in the first place. Suh did kick him in the arm once though. It’s time for people to grow up and stop talking about this fantasy non-story.

  15. It’s weird – a Packer leaves to any team but the Vikes and the Packer fans don’t turn into teenage girls with a bad case of unrequited love.

Must be some kind of horn envy . . . or fear.

  16. The Packers still have 5 guys with starting experience under contract on the OL so I’m not surprised they let EDS get away.

    Good luck in TB, EDS.

  17. I will say Lovie Smith does not waste time nor money. I like the guy. He was given a bum shot in Chicago. I hope he and the Bucs succeed.

  18. Viking trolls! Give it up already. The Packers own the Vikings. Do you think your childish insults will somehow change that fact? No other fan base is as immature as you dolts. No other fan base is as disliked as you morons. Give it up and hope for the best, win something…..anything….THEN spout off. Then there will be a reason. Thank you,

  19. I too would have liked to see EDS stay. I don’t think he’ll ever be an “elite” Center but he was much more than just serviceable. He was extremely good at making the line calls and by all appearances had great chemistry with Rodgers. I will hope that he does well with the Bucs.

  20. Seriously, losing a good center hurts, as a Vike fan I can tell you Matt Birk has yet to be replaced.

EDS came into his own last season.
By the end of the last season the Packers were getting much better O line play.
EDS was a big part of that.

EDS leaving is great for the Vikes.

  21. They must be moving TJ to center….Bulaga is not playing LT. Ted needs to spend some cash but I agree EDS was not worth it….Scott Wells #2

  22. Maybe Barclay can play center and put Bulaga back at right tackle. I thought EDS was ok not great, not terrible. Was hoping for a resign for continuity if anything.

  23. The Scott Wells reference is giving EDS too much credit. He was average at best. His replacement can be had mid-way through the 2014 draft for much less $. Relax Packer Nation. We have some options at OL.
