Doctors announce Jim Kelly’s cancer has returned

Jim Kelly AP

Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has another fight on his hands.

According to the Buffalo News, Kelly’s doctors have confirmed his oral cancer has returned. The surgeon who performed his initial surgery, Dr. Thom Loree of Erie County Medical Center, announced the news in a statement.

“Jim Kelly came to ECMC this week for continued testing related to his oral surgery. Unfortunately, it has been determined that his cancer has returned,” Loree said. “Our team of head and neck cancer specialists is determining a course of treatment that will allow Mr. Kelly to battle this cancer successfully. Mr. Kelly has asked that you to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Kelly was initially diagnosed last summer, and surgery was performed to take out the tumor and rebuild his jaw.

Our thoughts are with Kelly and his family as they continue the fight.

This guy didn’t want to be in Buffalo. Now he is Western New York.

He is so much more than a football player.

If he were English he would be a knight. If he is Catholic he should be a Saint. For now he is a living legend and gives hope to Bills fan to this day.

I want to meet him but I’m not worthy.

Cause it’s awful lonely when you’re battling that disease, even with the help of family friends and fans, it’s that guy standing there all alone wt the end of the day.

If you had nothing strong or encouraging to wish the guy then just leave. Take the negativity with you.

That’s too bad for Jim. Good luck to you and your family, I can’t believe you have to fight this now. It’s not fair that you have to go through this after all the other family problems. Good Luck Jim and that’s from a Dolphin fan!!

  78. lostsok says: Mar 14, 2014 8:24 PM

I remember watching a game when Jim was in the USFL. He went to the sideline holding his hand after being sacked. He had dislocated 2-3 fingers. The trainers got the fingers aligned, taped, and he was back on the field a few players later.

I don’t remember if he won that game. But…that’s the point. We don’t know if Jim will win this fight…but I have no doubt he will give it one hell of a battle.

As a Dolphin fan there are very, very few opponents I’ve ever respected more than Jim Kelly.

I hate the bills as a jet fan. But my dad was a bills fan and I always admired Jim Kelly’s play and resilience. The man never wanted anything to do with Buffalo but eventually fell in love with his teammates and the community here in upstate NY. My dad will always remember the time Jim Kelly bought him a beer at Duff’s and talked to him for a full two hours just about life (All Buffalo fans know this place).

Jim Kelly’s got my support and all of Buffalo’s! You can do it Jim!!!

Packer nation wishes you the best Mr. Kelly.

  89. knew8411 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:18 PM

I have an observation to make here….the vast majority of the comments on here about Mr. Kelly, are positive encouraging comments towards Mr. Kelly & the battle of his lifetime.
I have a really difficult time, having lost both my parents to this horrid disease, understanding why anyone would dislike or disagree with the positive nature of these comments.
There are few people who love the game of football more than I do.
But team loyalties aside, there are some things in life that are bigger than this game. Someone batteling cancer is one of those things!
God Bless you Mr. Kelly. I pray that God watches over you, and the medical staff caring for you, and that he allows you to beat this horrid disease.

  90. rollonthree says: Mar 14, 2014 11:29 PM
