The Giants, who have primarily added to their offense in the first few days of free agency, have reportedly reached a deal with a potential starting linebacker.
According to Michael Silver of NFL.com, former Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain will sign with the Giants. Later, via his verified Twitter account, McClain indicated he would be joining New York.
The 28-year-old McClain has played inside in Baltimore’s 3-4 scheme, but he also has played some outside linebacker, and that’s where he could project in New York’s 4-3 front.
McClain’s addition comes after Giants outside linebacker Keith Rivers agreed to a deal with Buffalo on Wednesday. Also, the Giants’ agreement with Seahawks outside linebacker O’Brien Schofield hit a snag because of a knee issue, and Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports the deal won’t go through.
McClain notched 52 tackles in 10 games for the Ravens in 2013. He was on the PUP list to begin the season because of a spinal cord contusion suffered in 2012, then gained clearance to return. McClain has recorded 332 tackles and 4.5 sacks in regular season play since entering the NFL as undrafted free agent from Syracuse in 2008.
