Jason Hatcher said Cowboys didn’t want him back

Jason Hatcher, Terrance Williams AP

If the Cowboys don’t want them, it appears the Redskins will be happy to take them.

After reaching a deal yesterday with former Dallas defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, the Redskins are trying to finalize a deal with his teammate Anthony Spencer now.

The Cowboys haven’t made much of a move for Spencer since franchise-tagging him a year ago, and Hatcher said they didn’t indicate they wanted him either.

“[The Cowboys] didn’t show no signs that they wanted me back,” Hatcher told KRLD-FM, via ESPN.com. “I know the fans are upset. They should be. They have all the right in the world to be. But I made the right decision for me. If we could’ve made it work out we would’ve, but I’m in a great place with the Redskins, a great organization. I’m looking forward to getting back to football.”

Hatcher got a four-year, $27.5 million deal with the Redskins after his career-best 11.0-sack season.

Which makes it clear somebody wanted him.

    “Didn’t show no signs”…
Maybe they don’t care for his grammar

From “The most mediocre franchise in sports ” to the most dysfunctional franchise in sports. Perhaps the RG’s will go 8-8 now .

I think Jerry knew he wasn’t going to out bid another team for Hatcher and based on that 4 year deal, he wouldn’t have.

Hatcher had a great season last year but reality is he will be 32 when the season starts and that’s getting past prime for a defensive lineman.

The Cowboys simply must get younger on their defensive line.

It remains to be seen if this was a great move by the Redskins or Jerry.

That’s because during the season, you know the time when teams are fighting for a shot at the playoffs, you were talking about how you were going to test the market and “do what’s best for me”. Shouldn’t be surprised the team followed the same “me first” strategy as you Hatcher.

Good luck with the overpaid bowen in D.C you oversized brat (who had one great year which shockingly came during contract year).

    $7 mil a year?! I guess they’re about done with Bowen… Carriker’s gone…. Turn the page

  7. coreyn23 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:33 AM

Jerry Jones is getting senile and taking Al Davis’ place as the crazy owner in the NFL. The Cowboys have absolutely no direction right now.

  8. losntina69 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:38 AM

So instead of signing an aging hall of famers like bruce smith we sign an aging player who balled out in his contract year mmmm. Kind of been down this aisle before ie Fat Albert and Adam Archuleta. For 4 million more we could have had a young big NT in Linval Joseph, but this guy is good too smh.

  9. seatownballers says: Mar 14, 2014 8:39 AM

Jerry is an idiot. How are the cowboys gonna run on the Redskins now

  10. aaidif says: Mar 14, 2014 8:43 AM

AAAHHH… at least one professional sports organization in DFW wants to win. Seems the Jones family is going the way of the Ford family!

  11. thelongstar says: Mar 14, 2014 8:45 AM

I wouldn’t say they didn’t want him back per se, but rather didn’t want to pay him a ridiculous contract after coming off one solid season, particularly when they have little money to spend. The release of Ware and the failure to retain Hatcher just illustrates that the NFL is a business above all else.

  12. meatcarroll says: Mar 14, 2014 8:45 AM

Even if the Cowboys did want him, Jerry Jones has screwed up the cap situation so comically that it’s literally impossible to have signed Hatcher to any reasonable offer near market value.

  13. igster1 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:50 AM

the name change will be the Washington cowboys. what an idiot that jj is. please jerry sell the team and get out of texas.

  14. humpofdc says: Mar 14, 2014 8:54 AM

Welcome to DC all former cowgirls. Now take a knee so we can sprinkle Snyder water to cleanse you…..

  15. fordman84 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:54 AM

Fans aren’t upset, Jason. You are a guy on the wrong side of 30 who can be counted on for at most 4 sacks a year when you aren’t looking for a contract.

Good luck with the Skins, now stop talking about Dallas. There is a reason you feel we didn’t want you back, because we didn’t.

  16. prgsdw says: Mar 14, 2014 8:54 AM

That’s right Dallas didn’t want you back. Four years and $27 million for a guy that had one good season and is 32 years old. Good luck with him playing even three years of that deal.

  17. dccowboy says: Mar 14, 2014 8:55 AM

Almost $8mil/yr for a 32 year old DT who has had one good year (and that as a 3T DT in a 4-3 with one of the greatest pass rushers in NFL history as his DE getting constant double teams) and who has never been a great or even good 3-4 DE is a LOT of money to pay. ‘The Danny’ loves to sign Cowboy players.

#1 rule in the NFL is not too pay age, which the Redskins continually violate with predictable results.

Dallas wanted him back but knew that they could not (and were not willing) to pay him $7.5mil/yr.

I’m happy for Hatch, he got paid. Good for him.

As far as Spencer is concerned, he’s a good DE/OLB, but, that was before he had microfracture surgery on his knee and, as with all microfracture surgeries, the recovery is iffy. He was supposed to be ready for the off season, but now the Docs are saying he won’t be ready til training cap, if then.

  18. mrdry14 says: Mar 14, 2014 8:58 AM

Wow! First time in his career with more than 4 sacks and he’ll be 32 this season.

  19. ravenswhat says: Mar 14, 2014 9:05 AM

So Dallas thinks getting rid of their best Defensive player will change the 8-8 seasons? Interesting strategy.

  20. rajbais says: Mar 14, 2014 9:05 AM

This might be the worst team in football next year. Their QB is in bad shape and they have no defense.

Look at the texans. Subtractions, QB self destruction, and a declining defense led to their demise.

The worst part is that from 2011 till 2013 Dallas edged out Houston in talent caliber and have been 24-24 over the last 3 years.

Jerry jones is a virus to that team.

Btw, with Terrell Owens the team had a winning record yearly and went 31-17 during those 3 years.

And Garrett was the red headed genius to rely upon?

If he was so good why didn’t nick Saban make him an offensive coordinator in Miami?

  21. fireballshot says: Mar 14, 2014 9:45 AM

As DC put it, “Almost $8mil/yr for a 32 year old DT who has had one good year (and that as a 3T DT in a 4-3 with one of the greatest pass rushers in NFL history as his DE getting constant double teams)…Furthermore, as he started of fairly strong, his effort and production greatly trailed off as the season progressed than he had a stellar final game. It was his contract year.

I’m happy he’s not resigned, if we get Spencer, the good news is he’ll be cheap and not flirting with double digit million a year mark.

The Cowboys are sending strong a message to players and their agents, that they’re no longer showing loyalty and they’re no longer going to overpay players in the future. Because they didn’t restructure Witten & Carr, they’ll be the next to be asked to take a paycut in 2015 unless they have stud seasons…

  22. dirtydrynn27 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:47 AM

Cowboy fans seem awfully jealous because they dont have money to spend.I find it amusing that its ok to pay 33 year old QB that is known for choking a 100 million dollar contract but its not ok to pay a 31 year old DT a 27 million dollar contract……Go figure!

  23. athwartships says: Mar 14, 2014 9:53 AM

“I know the fans are upset. They should be. They have all the right in the world to be.”

I think this has more to do with their team being the punch line of most jokes lately than losing you.

  24. trollaikman8 says: Mar 14, 2014 10:12 AM

Jerry needs a pamphlet titled “what would billichick do?”, and use it any time he needs to make a GM decision.

I’m sure one of the first bullet points in that pamphlet would be “don’t sign 32yr old d-linemen to extensions (see Ratliff, Jay)”.

Now it sucks that 4/$27M doesn’t sound like a lot and I’m sure Melton will cost more, and Aaron Donald is probably out of reach, but something tells me that Billichick wouldn’t be too concerned.

There should be a section on minimizing public appearances and quotes.

  25. dcterp says: Mar 14, 2014 10:38 AM

I get that dallas is trying to go younger and build a D line. But for someone in Garretts position who is in a make or break year and a qb thats not in his 20’s anymore, just seems like a rebuilding year for a D that lost its best 2 players(thats can stay on the field) and SUCKED last year… I mean, is there a geno atkins trade up jerrys sleve?? Not really understanding his logic. If Jerry wants to rebuild, why is he keeping a questionable coach around?

  26. jrh0 says: Mar 14, 2014 10:39 AM

All the “one good season” comments are pretty funny (as in ridiculous). Hatcher didn’t get sacks before (as a 3-4 DE) because getting sacks wasn’t his job. He DID get sacks as a 4-3 DE because in a 4-3 pass rushing IS his job.

When Hatcher comes to us, we’ll put him back in a 4-3 and he will go back down to 2 or 3 sacks for the season and you know what? That’s fine. We aren’t paying him to get sacks. We are going to be paying him, to hold down the DL, so that our OLBs can be freed up to get sacks. If Rak and Kerrigan pull double digit sacks this year, it will be because Hatcher is getting his job done.

Slightly steep price for DC but good investment. Not a bad call for Dallas either, since the simple fact is, they can’t afford to keep these guys and their focus really needs to be on a rebuild. The smartest thing Dallas could do would be to part ways with some older FAs, focus on clearing away dead cap space this year, and being competitive in 2015.

  27. jrh0 says: Mar 14, 2014 10:40 AM

3-4. That should have read we’ll put him back in a 3-4. Typo.

  28. duwaynebaird says: Mar 14, 2014 10:43 AM

I see what you did there Snyder. You’re going to upgrade your defense with two players that were on the worst defense in league history. Brilliant, flawless strategy ‘Skins. Championship!

Jerry signed Ware to a big fat contract and figured the defense would take care of it itself. In fact Jerry has too much money tied up a just a few players. He has repeatedly ignored the defensive needs of the team. Now Cowboy fans are suffering the effects of what Jerry has done. I don’t want to suffer thru another season like last season where the defense was nothing short of a bad joke. I think Jerry has figured out the best way to handle the defensive line is to tear the whole thing down and start over. Sign a few journeymen and draft wisely. The DL will have to grown up together. In a year or two we may have a good DL.

  33. athwartships says: Mar 14, 2014 12:30 PM

I sympathize with wanting to end a season with something other than 8-8, but I suppose if they don’t mind the number on the right being the one that goes up, I am ok with that.

  34. jeffbroyhill says: Mar 14, 2014 12:30 PM

9 sacks in 6 years of playing in a 3-4 defense, 8 sacks in 1 year playing in a 4-3, and you choose to go to a team running a 3-4???? Good luck with that, Snyder is head and shoulders above Jerry in the stupid moves category.

  37. courtjester1234 says: Mar 15, 2014 5:01 PM

Well it seems like 3 of the four teams in the NFC East don’t even want to compete for the division the up coming season. Can you guess which team is the early favorite? It’s not the JJ cowboys or the rg3 skins or the Eli manning g-men. Are these three teams gonna make it that easy to repeat as division champ? I can understand Dallas and D.C with their unstable ownership but N.Y usually has a plan. But again what will Philly do if they do win?
