Remember that report about the Packers plan to spend big money on free agents from other teams?

Nearly three full days into the process, the Packers haven’t disappointed in their ongoing disappointment of Packers fans. Just peruse the PFT Packers page for the headlines from the past week.

They’ve re-signed a few of their own, including a contract for cornerback Sam Shields that approaches the top of the market for the position. But apart from a visit with former Texans tight end Owen Daniels, the Packers have done nothing with free agents from other teams.

In fairness to the Packers, it’s still early. They can be active participants at any point in the process; last year, the Ravens waited until after June 1 to sign linebacker Daryl Smith, who became a key contributor in 2013. Eight years ago, when G.M. Ted Thompson made his only big splash in free agency, he signed Charles Woodson in late April.

Cornerback Tramon Williams has lobbied for an influx of older players on defense. While it hasn’t happened yet, it could happen at any time, especially as the market slows down and the bargains emerge.
