Ravens, Daryl Smith agree to four-year deal

Cincinnati Bengals v Baltimore Ravens Getty Images

Daryl Smith will remain in Baltimore.

Smith, the middle linebacker signed last year to fill the shoes of Ray Lewis, has agreed to a new contract with the Ravens.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, it’s a four-year, $16.1 million deal. That deal was reported less than an hour after the Titans and inside linebacker Wesley Woodyard agreed to a four-year, $16 million deal, so that appears to be the going rate for inside linebackers right now.

Smith was a second-round pick of the Jaguars in 2004 and spent nine seasons in Jacksonville before signing with the Ravens last year. In his first year in Baltimore he started all 16 games and had career highs in combined tackles (123), sacks (5.0) and interceptions (three).

Smith is the No. 59 player in our Free Agent Hot 100.

    In related news…..

Flacco was heard telling a group of ignorant NFL fans….

” I thought my contract crippled the team? How are we re-signing all these players and have more salary cap space than most teams? Kiss my ring losers”.

Ozzie Newsome strikes again. Still plenty of cap space to sign Steve Smith and a center and possibly even a safety.

  9. clipper222 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:32 AM

    Ozzie is CRUSHING this FA!

Still room to bolster the team. And that’s BEFORE the draft (come on Mike Evans & Terrence West!)

This team will be much improved from the 8-8 team last year.

    16 million for Smith??

He was not the same player last year.

I bet they LB in round 1

what is Ozzie thinking. how can we ever sign anyone if we pay Joe all that money. the franchise is in ruins.
oh wait. you mean we are still signing guys. interesting. I guess Ozzie knows his stuff after all. lol

  15. typerico says: Mar 14, 2014 11:44 AM

When players take less money to stay with their current team, that says a lot about the organization.

  16. dowhatifeellike says: Mar 14, 2014 11:45 AM

$4mil a year for a guy coming off a career year, who replaced Ray Lewis with no noticable drop in production? Great deal for the team and Smith should probably fire his agent.

  17. immerstahl says: Mar 14, 2014 11:46 AM

The Ravens have never been shy about tagging players to suit their needs:

offensive lineman Wally Williams (1998), cornerback Chris McAlister (2003 and 2004), linebacker Terrell Suggs (2008 and 2009) and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (2010)

    Howd that work out?

    puh-leeez.

  20. cnote82 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:47 AM

Too bad Joe Flacco is still the QB.

Last year is a sign of things to come.

8-8 will be common from now on.

Good signing though….especially considering Suggs, Ngata and Rice are declining.

Enjoy the fluke Superbowl you managed to win. Ravens will mediocre for the foreseeable future….just like last year.

  21. bmore44 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:48 AM

This is bigger than Monroe signing. Smith has picked up where Ray Lewis left from. Solid player in middle.

  22. seatt1ej0nes says: Mar 14, 2014 11:50 AM

Irrelevant. As long as the HAWKS are in the league you’ll simply be playing for second place. #goHAWKS #kissthering

  23. crit76 says: Mar 14, 2014 11:51 AM

Daryl Smith is the one mistake I thought Dave Caldwell made last year when purging Jag’s roster. I thought Daryl’s professionalism, work ethic and play would have been welcomed in a young Jaguars locker room…good move by Raven’s to resign him…he’s a true professional!

    Congratulations Daryl!

  24. Ed Bandell says: Mar 14, 2014 12:02 PM

And the Ravens fans are glad. All he did was come here and set career highs in tackles, sacks, passes defended, and interceptions.

    RavenzG,

I agree with you–Newsome is one of the best GM’s in football. Your defense is in good shape BUT the Ravens issues are on the O-line & in the running game. Yes you kept Monroe but there have been no upgrades there.

If you can’t consistently run the ball then you’re going to have Flacco throwing the ball too much & that means too many INT’s. I think Flacco is a good QB but he clearly he needs more of a running game.

    Best franchise in the game.

  30. ravenmadnky says: Mar 14, 2014 12:26 PM

Ozzie does it again. He wanted to retain our three core free agents, and he did it without overpaying. The saved cap space will come in handy today and for weeks to come. Steve Smith today. LOTS of quality free agent WR’s will be available after the draft and Ozzie might snag another one then. More quality cuts coming after the draft. Bargain season opens very soon and even the haters have to admit, Ozzie is one of the best bargain bin shoppers.

  31. ravensterpsarmystrong says: Mar 14, 2014 12:27 PM

Good work. Now address the O-line: PLEASE! Get Mack at center and get a versatile tackle and guard.

  32. rockthered1286 says: Mar 14, 2014 12:37 PM

If the ravens can sign Steve Smith and sit on the market to let price come down for a stop gap RT I like how the draft lays out for us. Clinton Dix in the 1st and a C in the second. Both should and could start (staring quality interior linemen can easily be found in the middle rounds). This effectively shores up every spot. Maybe add a second TE with a mid round pick as well and a WR. But for those events to fall into place are honestly not out of question and very likely. You can’t fill every void in FA. Nobody ever does. That’s the point of the draft. So you look at the market and do what you can. The Ravens consistently do that and hit on more picks than they miss.

  33. steelerdynasty2010 says: Mar 14, 2014 12:41 PM

  34. Ed Bandell says: Mar 14, 2014 12:42 PM

“If you can’t consistently run the ball then you’re going to have Flacco throwing the ball too much & that means too many INT’s. I think Flacco is a good QB but he clearly he needs more of a running game.”

You can plant about 6 of those interceptions on Ed Dickson and his cinder block hands. A lot of his INTS came off of passes over the middle that bounced off of his brick hands and popped into the air and got picked off.

Flacco has no O-line up the middle, had virtually no protection at RT, had two broken down RB’s in Rice and Pierce, and lost his two most reliable receivers in Pitta and Boldin.

Rice is going to come back strong, he has to after what’s happened to him. I can see the Ravens picking up a bruising back like Blount or drafting a big guy later on in the draft. Pitta is back and I seriously think the Ravens are either picking up a proven WR in FA and then will draft Ebron at TE if he’s still there. If not, they will pick the best WR available.

There are some decent Guards and Centers on the market, and Ozzie is a wizard when it comes to finding talent when other teams cut their rosters.

  35. mataug says: Mar 14, 2014 12:56 PM

not a Ravens fan but the thing that I found the most irritating about Raven haters was the fact that they never bothered to check Flacco’s cap hits under his new contract:
    2013 – 6.8 mil (123mil cap limit)
    2014 – 14.8 mil (133mil cap limit)
    2015 – 14.55 mil (Florio’s source says cap limit would be 145mil)
    2016 – 28.55 mil (Florio’s source says cap limit would be 160mil)
    2017 – 31.15 mil
    2018 – 24.75 mil

His contract would be definitely be restructured/extended before the 2016 season begins.

    He’s not.

    He’s just a solid player.

That’s the reason nobody was chasing after him on day one and he signed a moderate deal.

  42. jiggy3198 says: Mar 14, 2014 1:16 PM

Cmich it’s because they loose all the players they drafted to other teams in FA. that’s why they get so many compensatory picks. In last two years list Kruger, ellerbe, mcclane. Reed, jones, oher, Cody, all drafted and all big part if team but can’t resign everybody because of too high cap numbers

  43. SmashMouthFootball says: Mar 14, 2014 1:22 PM

Anyhow…wish WW all the luck until he plays us. High character on and off the field but keep his but at WLB and he will be fine.

Really Steelers fans, REALLY?! The last time you guys made the Playoffs, (years ago) you got Tebowed! You’re GM keeps extending contracts of has been’s (further crippling the team) while the last few drafts have been less than stellar (to put it mild fashion.) Keep talking though, haters!

Ravens get the “Super Bowl” Discount. That is the discount for the privledge of playing for a perennial contender.

The Browns get the “Factory of Sadness” discount. It actually isn’t a discount, it is a premium they have to pay more to keep anybody.

  50. Nofoolnodrool says: Mar 14, 2014 2:24 PM

I love the fact that Steeler fans feel the need to invade every Ravens thread, must suck knowing your last playoff appearance was a loss to Tebow….

as for the signing, nice, that leaves only RT and FS as positions in need of a starter at this point.

I am a Darryl Smith fan and he was a steal by Ozzie & Co last year – especially versus the more known but aging Harrison. At 4 million it was a decent signing, but I would wonder how the last couple of years play out. There aren’t many LBs in their mid-30s in the NFL for a reason.

Keep em coming Ozzie. The team was 8-8 – not 2-14. A couple of key injuries kept us out of the playoffs. It didn’t need to get blown up – just tweaked. Ozzie will finish the puzzle and we will be right back at the top of the division…

This is why I am glad Ozzie is our GM and not you, or most of the other GMs in the game. He got Smith on a steal of a contract last season and the guy put up:

123 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 ints, and 19 Passes Defended. Woodyard signed for almost as much money, almost exactly the same amount, and put up 84 tackles. 1/5 sacks, 1 int, and 4 passes defended.

You don’t need a superstar at every position, but this guy was more than just solid last season. He is the leader on the defense as well, something our younger trending players need. Suggs is trying to be a leader, but I just don’t think he sets as good of an example.

I am proud of my Ravens and their success. I am not so thrilled with the guys making headlines for the wrong reasons and I hope the Ravens make the right decisions on these guys once the truth comes out. Jah Reid and Deonte Thompson are lower tier guys that already weren’t really producing, they might get cut. Ray Rice is harder to cut, and I am waiting for this video to come out that the police supposedly have of him and the incident. If he did slug his woman and knocked her out, he deserves to be punished. If that means he needs to go to jail and miss playing football, so be it. It has happened before to another Ravens RB; Jamal Lewis.

Ravens fans had to sit through some HORRIBLE growing pains the first several seasons as they took over essentially the Browns. But in our relatively short history we’ve got 2 superbowl victories. The team has gone to the playoffs each season Joe Flacco was the QB save for last year. There is good reason to be excited. Ozzie usually finds a gem or two in the draft, he usually hits on his free agent signings. We can sure up some of the weaknesses from last year and hopefully have better success.

“Ozzie is very good at free agents but why does he have to sign so many of them if he is so great at the draft?”

Admittedly he’s done a bad job of drafting some positions in the past. Boller (QB), the WR position until recently with Torrey Smith, although Mark Clayton was a very good receiver, he just kept getting hurt all the time, OLB Sergio Kindle (that was Kindle’s fault though, ruined what could have been a very promising career).

But, you can’t draft a starter at every single position. On the other end of the spectrum though, take a look at the players he has drafted and how they’ve done. Ray Lewis, Jonathan Odgen, Chris McAlister, Ed Reed, Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Jamal Lewis, Marshal Yanda, Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, Peter Boulware, Jimmy Smith, Matt Elam, Dennis Pitta, Todd Heap, etc.

Within the top two picks in the draft you should find starters on your team. After that you should find depth/special teams players. If you get starters out of those players, you are doing well.

Ozzie has done well with his UDFA signings and finding guys other teams cut loose. They are very low risk so you bring in a bunch of them, play them in pre-season, and keep the best of the bunch. A couple of gambles last season didn’t pan out such as Rolando McClain and Micheal Huff, but he found guys like Corey Graham a couple seasons ago, Chris Canty, James Ihedigbo, and Daryl Smith.

  63. scoobies05 says: Mar 14, 2014 7:49 PM

we praise Ozzie for good reason. he has been incredibly successful And when he makes a move we expect it to be a good one. do they all pan out…of course not. and we don’t expect them to. as far as winning the pre season super bowl, nothing has been won yet. but this time of year is now way to build your team. and typically the ravens don’t make big splashes. this year is no exception. right player right price. hope you are well
