Report: Colts agree to one-year deal with Hakeem Nicks

Hakeem Nicks AP

The Colts sent out a photo this afternoon of free agent wide receiver Hakeem Nicks walking the halls.

They probably wouldn’t have done that if they weren’t confident.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said the Colts were closing in on a deal with the former Giants wideout, and Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports just confirmed that Nicks had agreed to a one-year deal.

A prove-it deal seemed most likely for Nicks after a disappointing final season with the Giants, but his destination surprised some.

It’s unclear if his hometown Panthers, who have no receivers at all at the moment, were in the mix or not. But Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson furthered his reputation as a closer by getting the deal done before Nicks could visit San Diego.

Looks like the panthers are gonna be running plays out of single wing and goaline.

If Hakeem is healthy and ready to go Luck is going to love him. Healthy Nicks is one of the most precise route runners I’ve seen. Nicks, Hilton, and Reggie might be a pretty sick combo.

One year = Low risk/high reward.
    Good move Grigs.
    Go Colts!

This guy has a lot left. Young talented receiver… The Giants will be sorry about this one.

  10. sowcrates says: Mar 14, 2014 7:37 PM

Yes, Carolina needs a receiver, but I personally don’t feel like Nicks would’ve answered many questions for them long term.

  11. bennyb82 says: Mar 14, 2014 7:37 PM

At least Carolina will be able to draft a top WR with their first round pick…wait a second…

Colts making a good move after that DHB disaster last year. Panthers however must be drafting a WR in every round of the draft lol

If TR has a decent year, Indy will be in the afc championship

Grigson is the man!Two consecutive playoff teams while managing the cap to sign another big batch of talent. And the good news – we still have money for more!

  16. cheezycolt says: Mar 14, 2014 7:44 PM

The passing game should be damn effective next year. If we can get a decent FS and open up the running lanes, this monster is ready to make a postseason run!

  17. kev86 says: Mar 14, 2014 7:52 PM

He stunk last year. Glad Giants did not reward such lame effort. Boooooo. ( thanks for 2011 run when you had passion)

Solid player he’s a championship piece this guy was the best free agent receiver available this year toughed it out all season with injuries and gets blasted for not producing like he normally does, hope he proves everybody wrong.

    That’s good for the nfl.

  20. tvjules says: Mar 14, 2014 7:59 PM

Now just shore up the offensive line, so Luck has time to throw to him!

Sorry if the Nicks from 3 years ago shows up. If it’s the one from the last 2 years… not so much.

  25. zack2482 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:20 PM

Now Nicks will know what it is like to have a QB throw to him and not to the other team.

  26. bbk1000 says: Mar 14, 2014 9:28 PM

I’d love to see what he was worth if he occasionally tried to catch a ball….make a tackle…just no heart in my opinion….

    Just another diva….

  27. leronford says: Mar 14, 2014 9:47 PM

Nicks made the right move. He’ll have a better chance to thrive in Indy’s offense, where there are multiple receiving options than he would have in Mike Shula’s offense, where right now the only option is TE Greg Olsen, especially on a 1-year “prove it” type deal.

  28. cowboysdoitbigger says: Mar 14, 2014 9:59 PM

Ya I would want out of the NFC East, and away from the Cowboys if I had to face Carr,Scandrick and Mo 2 times a year.

  29. qdog112 says: Mar 14, 2014 10:17 PM

So does this mean that Luck will have no more excuses? Or will he be exposed as the ultimate dinker and dunker, despite having quality wideouts?

Check his career ypa to see what I mean. (college and pro) Under 7.0 ypa.

  32. coltzfan166 says: Mar 14, 2014 10:50 PM

Good signing. Now please get rid of DHB.

  33. kyblue33 says: Mar 14, 2014 10:56 PM

Great Job by GM Grigs- works real hard and a great closer. Am so excited to be in my seat next year-will be very strong if healthy-lost more games to injured starters, than any other team. Still made strong playoff showing—Pumped!

  34. bearshaterseverywhere says: Mar 14, 2014 11:24 PM

I threw my drink on a Colts fan and his obese wife at a bar in Chicago during the 4th Qtr of SB 41! I’m still not over that loss….Rex Grossman and Lovie Smith. Peyton Manning is overrated….and it stings bad knowing that he beat my team to get his only ring.

  35. peytonmanningsforehead says: Mar 15, 2014 2:32 PM

Nicks didn’t even want to waste his time visiting San Diego. Pretty much explains every competent NFL players attitude.
