Browns and Ben Tate make it official

Josh Bynes, Ben Tate, Matt Elam AP

We expected it to happen today, and now it has: Ben Tate is a Brown.

Tate announced on Twitter that he has signed with Cleveland, via a picture of himself in a Browns hat, and the team officially announced the signing on Twitter as well.

Coming out of Auburn in 2010, Tate was seen as a good prospect, and the Texans chose him in the second round of the draft. But Tate broke his ankle and missed his entire rookie season. In three seasons since then, Tate has played well while splitting carries with Arian Foster in Houston.

In Cleveland, Tate instantly becomes by far the best running back on the roster. Last year Willis McGahee led the Browns in rushing with 377 yards on 138 carries, a meager average of 2.7 yards an attempt. Suffice to say the Browns are expecting a lot more than that out of Tate in 2014. And a Cleveland team that has also signed safety Donte Whitner, linebacker Karlos Dansby, tight end Jim Dray and receiver Andrew Hawkins is expecting a lot more than the 4-12 or 5-11 records that have become the norm.

I hope that this doesn’t leave a bad Tate in their mouths.

DAWG POUND TO THE SUPER BOWL!

  3. joemammy says: Mar 15, 2014 3:03 PM

Yep…Steelers, Ravens and Bengals cheerleaders are getting a little nervous, now.

    I love it…

    Good signings..all!

    Where’s Blount at?

  6. seatownballers says: Mar 15, 2014 3:04 PM

Browns looking good after the wreck.
They should shock everyone and draft linebacker Mack at #4. They cannot miss on their quarterback selection

  7. rarelyclever says: Mar 15, 2014 3:04 PM

I don’t know how well he’ll do behind Cleveland’s offensive line, but I do know his fantasy draft stock just went up by about 8 rounds.

  8. bengalsfan20 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:05 PM

Coming from a Bengals fan, I like the signing.

  9. jbake62 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:07 PM

Good pick up by the Browns. If he stays healthy he can be a beast.

  10. mikemcdorman says: Mar 15, 2014 3:07 PM

    Good.

Now sign Dominique Rodgers Cromartie and Matt Schaub (when he’s released, to back up Hoyer)

    Then take Sammy Watkins at 4; CJ Mosely (ILB) at 26;

  11. thefiesty1 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:08 PM

I didn’t know Tate was ready to end his career. Why would anyone actually want to go to Cleveland and maybe win 4 games every year?

  12. bat42boy says: Mar 15, 2014 3:12 PM

Nice signing. Now they can concentrate on other pressing needs by using the upcoming draft. I’m looking for a much improved team for this year. The new front office and coaching staff is a great improvement offering great expectations.

  13. klroot says: Mar 15, 2014 3:13 PM

The fans thank Jimmy Haslam for rebuilding the front office, Ray Farmer is infusing talent on this roster, fans are dreaming again, of a Winning season is not so far fetched

  14. FinFan68 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:15 PM

If they get decent production from the QB the Browns can be competitive.

    Believeland!

  16. jclark6528 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:21 PM

    WOW……2 years & only $7 million……what a team friendly contract. Great move!

  17. ubepunkedagain says: Mar 15, 2014 3:21 PM

A huge upgrade over the slow footed, hesitant, and vision incompetent Richardson. Browns get a better RB and fleeced the Colts for their first.

  18. wwrgesusd says: Mar 15, 2014 3:22 PM

All they need is a QB! Give the Redskins a 2 and you can have Captain Kirk! Give us a factory of sadness t-shirt and you can have Rex Grossman and an Adam archuletta jersey!

  19. oldcracker says: Mar 15, 2014 3:24 PM

A good, not great signing by the Browns. They are definitely headed in the right direction….finally!

I worry about Tate’s durability though. I can’t scream it loud enough, we need O-line help. One, to protect the QB but also to punch some running lanes.

Generally, under the Shanahans, Zone-blocking is used and RB benefit greatly. (Remember all the very good RB’s Papa Shanahan in Denver?) I question if we have the O-line personnel to Zone-block?

I’m reserving judgement on this signing until all the pieces are in place.

  20. deerhuntinfool71 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:26 PM

I like this signing. Now we have filled some holes in the roster. Allowing us to move up or down in the draft hopefully after the 3 rd round and take the best player avalible.

  22. oldcracker says: Mar 15, 2014 3:26 PM

I’m hoping we can snag RB Carlos Hyde in the draft. He’s a bulldozer that can share time with RB Tate.

  23. rolli1967 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:39 PM

I think the Browns have already laid a great foundation with this off season’s free agent signings, and letting go of players that were not producing (e.g. Weedon and Campbell) Now follow up with a great draft (draft Watkins at #4) and FINALLY let the good times roll again in C-town. Playoffs a good possibility.

  24. kosarkid says: Mar 15, 2014 3:46 PM

We’ve definitely gotten better on paper. Like all the signings so far. AFC North isn’t out of reach, not only because the Browns aren’t as bad as they’ve been, but because the other 3 teams in our division aren’t the super powers they used to be. Big Ben is aging, Flaco isn’t that great and has a huge contract, & Dalton is serviceable. We definitely have a good chance to either close the gap or step over it.

It’s becoming pretty clear that the Browns entered free agency with a plan, which is fairly impressive given the amount of turmoil in their front office. Whether or not it’s a good plan remains to be seen, but I gotta think it’s a good sign.

Be interesting to see where they go at qb. Obviously one coming high in the draft.

  31. believeland1954 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:59 PM

Upgrades at ILB, Safety, Slot Receiver, and RB. Added depth at TE and CB and a lot of money left. Pretty good start for Farmer.

  32. playedthegame32 says: Mar 15, 2014 4:07 PM

Ray Farmer is the next Ozzie Newsome, ironically, with closely related franchises. If Haslam gives him a chance, he will change the entire landscape and perception of that team and city!

  33. inthezone4 says: Mar 15, 2014 4:11 PM

    This team is serious

  37. mudmandenny says: Mar 15, 2014 4:49 PM

@bigbenowns….., you might want to check the players that you have running Dick Le Beau`s defense now! The steelers high draft picks of the last6-7 years are being cut, opting out in free agency or just plain busting out.
Can you say Woodley, Ziggy Hood, Harrison and your smurf receivers that have left?

  38. bensstinkyfingers says: Mar 15, 2014 4:57 PM

Farmer and the browns new staff appear to making solid personnel moves. With a good use of the many draft picks they hold, it wouldn’t be suprising to see the browns battling it out with the bengals for the top of the AFC north. Obviously, the steelers are on rapid decline, and bloated ben gets more immobile each year. the ravens some story getting older and have an inconsistent Qb. The bengals might have the most talent, but again Dalton will not take them to the superbowl. The door is open look for the new browns to smash through it, and claim their spot, stop the division.

  39. lbcoach34 says: Mar 15, 2014 5:04 PM

    buyer beware FA signings…they’re FA’s for a reason…

anyway – - Watkins or Mack at #4 overall, and either CJ Mosely/Ryan shazier at#26 or the best WR maybe Beckham

  40. browns4ever says: Mar 15, 2014 5:12 PM

Sooooo glad Tate is a Brown.
Yes Hoyer IS the Man! If we did not implode last year & Jimmy didn’t knee jerk Chud, he wouldn’t have found what a cancer Banner & Dumbardi to the organization & why no big name coach wanted to come to CLE. HOWEVER, I am extremely exited about Coach Pettine.
I know he will hold players accountable for on & off field performance. Listen to sideline soundbites of Vince Lombardi, I’m thinking HC Pettine will sound the same.
    GO BROWNS!!!

  41. nickster31 says: Mar 15, 2014 5:19 PM

Deep breath Browns fans. This MAY be a decent signing, BUT:

1 – Tate is not in the same quality as Bell, Bernard or Rice.
2 – FA Started 5 days ago, and there were no other teams even looking at him, and 3 players got bigger contracts.
3 – You are paying $3 million for a guy that has to improve to be average.
4 – You still don’t have a QB to keep defenses honest.
5 – You still need BIG TIME offensive line help.

Be excited about your improvements, but stop the crazy talk about winning the division and playoffs.

What you didn’t realize is the Browns were willing to cut Richardson and eat his cap number he was that bad…..Lucky for them they were able to fleece a number 1 draft pick for stutter step Richardson…….In a league were a much better back like Darren Sproles was traded for a fifth I would say the Browns won that trade every which way.

The Steelers fans are living in the past….The get worse every year and that will continue this year….but yet their disillusioned fans and players and coach are still full of swagger….its pathetic……Now that the Browns finally have an owner who is committed to winning …alot is going to change!!!!!!

  46. monkeyhateclean says: Mar 15, 2014 6:20 PM

That sound you heard was every fantasy football owner who was holding Ben Tate, dropping him.

  47. nostradamus4192 says: Mar 15, 2014 6:22 PM

Should be a smooth transition for Tate, since he lost his last 14 games in Houston. If it’s Brown…flush it down. #whodey!

  48. ballboy48 says: Mar 15, 2014 6:33 PM

Wow!!! A 2 year, $7 Million deal? What a steal for the Browns. Things are looking up in Cleveland. They still have what, like $32 Million to spend? Yikes!

  49. steelershater4life says: Mar 15, 2014 6:50 PM

Love the signing, finally a solid running back who can catch the ball also. Now add Watkins at #4, Mosley or Hyde at #26 and Bama QB with 1st pick in round 2 and I will be extreamly happy.

  50. mswravens says: Mar 15, 2014 6:51 PM

I think it’s a good signing, and I definitely see the Browns as a team doing some good things. Now they have to eliminate the disasters. Their 2 first round picks will be key, and will determine if they get over the hump or not. And yes, the Browns fleeced the Colts big time. I don’t even understand how anyone feels otherwise – and for all the acclaim Indy’s GM gets, he should be incredibly embarassed by that trade.

  51. fanofbrowns17 says: Mar 15, 2014 7:31 PM

  54. anthonyszabo says: Mar 15, 2014 9:39 PM

Why didn’t Florio write this article? Was this signing undeserved of hurling insults at the franchise and a condescending tone aimed at Browns fans?

  55. campcouch says: Mar 15, 2014 10:17 PM

Solid FA signings this off season. Nothing splashy, but some known names that hopefully will produce and not collect a check. This has been the trend in the past years. If they produce, and considering the Browns were close in the majority of their losses,a 9-7 season isn’t a reach. I wish for more, but I’m not naïve and think this is SB material. I’ll be satisfied with noticeable progress and not moral victories. Reasonable deal for Tate. If he does damage, then they can extend him. If he reverts to breaking again, the contract can be swallowed (not by me,because I don’t have 7 mil lol). To me it looks like Sammy Watkins in the draft and a QB later OR wait until next draft.

  56. nflsecurity862 says: Mar 15, 2014 10:41 PM

What about bringing in Schaub or Vick to compete with Hoyer and draft a QB in the mid rounds or next year? Grab Watkins, a RB, and O line help. Plus spend a few more bucks on another big hole filing signing and they might actually be onto something in Cleveland.

  57. queeflatifah says: Mar 15, 2014 11:06 PM

GM/Coach, sit down and talk to this guy…I think he can help…..
There are a lot worse QBs on NFL rosters that has never had the success Vince Young has had …(NFL Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and Mobility). Vince has a career winning record of 31-19…
I hope he gets another chance even if it’s third string…
