Edelman returns to the Pats

Indianapolis Colts v New England Patriots Getty Images

It took a little while, but it finally was resolved.

A year after hitting free agency and returning to New England on a one-year deal, receiver Julian Edelman has re-signed once again with the Patriots.

In addition to multiple reports of a deal, Edelman has declared on Twitter, “Foxboro is home.  Excited to be back.”

The agreement comes after the Pats had pushed Edelman to accept a three-year offer before the start of free agency.  He didn’t, opting instead to test the waters, drawing interest from Cleveland and San Francisco.

Edelman visited the 49ers before negotiations resumed with the Patriots.  It’ll be interesting to see how the final agreement compares to the offer that was rejected four days ago.

Sucks for you Edelman, now you cant join the dynasty that is becoming in CLEVELAND!

  2. timcast12 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:08 PM

They are not winning the Super Bowl anyways

  3. kingofthenorth92 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:08 PM

Is it just me or is everything going right for thr Patriots this offseason?? Lose Talib but sign Revis and Browner…Edelman re-signs…they could very well be in the Super Bowl next year barring a major decline from Brady….same with Denver and Peyton

    All right!!!

Should of come to the Lions on a minimum salary deal with no guarantees because I said so.

Funny I thought denver might take him too….maybe they take wilfork blount and spikes now

  9. tallguyme says: Mar 15, 2014 3:09 PM

Excellent news. Now let’s go get Jared Allen and Emmanuel Sanders, and kill it in the draft.

  10. pattunya says: Mar 15, 2014 3:10 PM

Hes a good tough player. The Patriots are a better team with him.

  11. edzo82270 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:12 PM

Pray Gronk is right and Amendola is what he can be because if you doubt either of those 2 will be the case Bill, you still need help. Offensive line included.

  12. joaonmatz says: Mar 15, 2014 3:13 PM

Good for the Pats. They could use one more Pass-Rusher to alleviate Ninkovich and Jones’ jobs, and they should be set for the Draft (assuming big Vince stays put).

  13. sixchr says: Mar 15, 2014 3:14 PM

This is so weird… an offseason where the Patriots actually do what we want them to do…

  14. rarelyclever says: Mar 15, 2014 3:14 PM

They needed him back more than any other team needed to add him. I don’t know if he’s anything special without Brady; he can’t stretch the field and he has a fumbling problem. Good player in that offense, but probably not a valuable commodity to other teams.

  16. andreboy1 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:17 PM

That combined with the fact that Edelman cut his teeth with a team known for lying and cheating made Jim decide that Edelman was not fit for the beautiful 49er uniform.

    Denver
    New England
    Seattle
    San Francisco

Don’t really see anyone catching them right now……Not sure in what order I would put them, but that really doesn’t matter at this point, anyway.

Gotta love the idiotic Patriot hater comments. You guys sound like a bunch of six year old homers. Andre….you sound like a four year old!

Best run franchise in all of pro sports…best owner in pro sports…..best coach in the NFL….and will close out his coaching career as the best ever.

So….why the hate and the surprise?

Wilfork may wake up, but he’s got real dumb pride clouding his thinking. He’ll be 33 in the fall, he’s coming back from a horrendous injury for a huge guy, and it’s pretty well known that he’s a lot closer to 400 lbs than he is to 325. No way is he worth $7.5 Mil. If they offered him $12Mil over two seasons, he’d have to be an idiot to turn it down……

  31. slaugin says: Mar 15, 2014 3:37 PM

Hopefully, you will be a Super Bowl Champ next year. And hopefully, BB has more cap space to take care of you in 2015 and beyond. (AH cap hit in 2014)

Julian, you are truly a great team player.

  45. bigdaddy44 says: Mar 15, 2014 4:43 PM

Good news, but there is still work to be done. They need a true pass rusher on the other side from Jones. The interior D-line rotation needs to be shored up, with or w/o Wilfork. There is need for a legitimate outside receiver. Last, Blount needs to be re-signed. With cap space left and the draft coming up, there should be no problem filling those holes. Then, it will be just a matter of getting everyone on the field to see who and who doesn’t work out.

  46. ghost26 says: Mar 15, 2014 4:47 PM

Do people realize that all three of these guys are under 30? Edelman is 27, Revis is 28, and Brownerr is 29. Is Bill widening Brady’s window? It looks that way to me. This isn’t the Broncos “win now” two-year plan. This is reloading for now and five years from now.

  48. tigerlilac says: Mar 15, 2014 4:53 PM

    Hey DLK47823

Spikes is in Buffalo but with Jamie Collins we surely did not need him anymore and with Ridley and Vereen not so sure we need Blount unless he wants to come back dirt cheap- did you seen what Ben Tate and Darren McFadden signed for?? RB’s are getting shafted this offseason. As far as I know Wilfork is still a Patriot so you should correct yourself. When you re sign your #1 pass catcher, add 2 of the best 4 corners in the NFL and have Gronk returning that is certainly a much better team. Last piece will be a James Jones/Brandon LaFell/Santonio Holmes type and maybe a Tony Gonzalez who never filed his retirement paperwork.

  52. micknangold says: Mar 15, 2014 5:15 PM

Lots of guys can catch a decent number of balls when you get over 150 forced your way. He’s a 4th WR at best on any team with a respectable WR core. That said he’d be the No. 3 on the Jets. That’s more an indictment of our situation than a compliment to Mr. Fingers.

  53. theycallmeyango says: Mar 15, 2014 5:17 PM

  54. pats777 says: Mar 15, 2014 5:25 PM

Say all you want about Brady making Edelman a better receiver, but remember, Edelburger is also the all-time leading punt returner. Brady has nothing to do with that.

  55. jolink653 says: Mar 15, 2014 5:34 PM

Amazing how so many fans would have loved it if their team would have signed Edelman, but because he signs back with the Patriots, he’s “overrated” and “average”. Have fun looking forward to your respective team’s draft. Patriots fans look forward to January

  56. metintodd says: Mar 15, 2014 5:38 PM

Great signing but can’t stop just with Edelman. They need much more on offense if they are going to beat out the Broncos. If Gronk comes back healthy and doesn’t absorb any more cheap shots, that’s fine, but Brady needs some more targets to throw to, either picked up in the draft, a trade or free agency.

  57. tigerlilac says: Mar 15, 2014 5:38 PM

People will be surprised at how much better their rush is now that they have Revis and Browner and a young athletic linebacker (Collins) with a year under his belt who can cover. Bill has not blitzed much the last few years but we will see a lot more of it this year.

I want to see the Pats use Edelman in a role similar to what the Seawawks did with Percy Harvin in the Super Bowl (4.5 40 versus Harvin’s 4.4). There is a reason he is so good at punt returns and getting him the ball on the move will create problems for opposing defenses.

  65. tcstunner says: Mar 15, 2014 6:43 PM

Pats need to trade Wilfork for a mid round pick. He’s coming off of a horrible injury and isn’t worth the price. That would add 7.5 mil to the 15mil they already have in salary cap space. Then use that 22.5 mil to sign Allen and Williams. Allen provides the pass rusher they need and Williams can easily replace Vince. Plus Williams gets paid half as much.

If people just said, “I hate the Patriots because they keep winning,” that would be acceptable.

But that’s not the case. They continue to attack the legacy, as if it will change. Under Belichick:

    11 Division Titles
