Edelman returns to the Pats

It took a little while, but it finally was resolved.

A year after hitting free agency and returning to New England on a one-year deal, receiver Julian Edelman has re-signed once again with the Patriots.

In addition to multiple reports of a deal, Edelman has declared on Twitter, “Foxboro is home.  Excited to be back.”

The agreement comes after the Pats had pushed Edelman to accept a three-year offer before the start of free agency.  He didn’t, opting instead to test the waters, drawing interest from Cleveland and San Francisco.

Edelman visited the 49ers before negotiations resumed with the Patriots.  It’ll be interesting to see how the final agreement compares to the offer that was rejected four days ago.

  1. Is it just me or is everything going right for thr Patriots this offseason?? Lose Talib but sign Revis and Browner…Edelman re-signs…they could very well be in the Super Bowl next year barring a major decline from Brady….same with Denver and Peyton

  2. Pray Gronk is right and Amendola is what he can be because if you doubt either of those 2 will be the case Bill, you still need help. Offensive line included.

  3. Good for the Pats. They could use one more Pass-Rusher to alleviate Ninkovich and Jones’ jobs, and they should be set for the Draft (assuming big Vince stays put).

  4. They needed him back more than any other team needed to add him. I don’t know if he’s anything special without Brady; he can’t stretch the field and he has a fumbling problem. Good player in that offense, but probably not a valuable commodity to other teams.

  5. Jim was shocked to see how tiny small Edelman was in person.

That combined with the fact that Edelman cut his teeth with a team known for lying and cheating made Jim decide that Edelman was not fit for the beautiful 49er uniform.

    Iron Sharpens Iron

  6. But I thought the Patriots never took care of their own, are arogant and cheap?

I guess that’s why they call some of you haters.

Good to see Edelman return, brings a good toughness to the WR corps

  7. Kinda sad he didn’t come back home to the bay area… oh well. Curious to see what he was offered by San Fran/ultimately ended up getting from NE as opposed to what they originally offered him.

  8. Kudos to Bill B and his team. Nice work addressing needs. It must really suck to play for the teams of most of this sites trolling posters that moan and groan on every pats thread. The Pats just added for fuel to their pathetic fires.

  9. Top Four SB Favorite Teams, so far this very young year:

    Denver
    New England
    Seattle
    San Francisco

Don’t really see anyone catching them right now……Not sure in what order I would put them, but that really doesn’t matter at this point, anyway.

  10. Gotta love the idiotic Patriot hater comments. You guys sound like a bunch of six year old homers. Andre….you sound like a four year old!

Best run franchise in all of pro sports…best owner in pro sports…..best coach in the NFL….and will close out his coaching career as the best ever.

So….why the hate and the surprise?

Wilfork may wake up, but he’s got real dumb pride clouding his thinking. He’ll be 33 in the fall, he’s coming back from a horrendous injury for a huge guy, and it’s pretty well known that he’s a lot closer to 400 lbs than he is to 325. No way is he worth $7.5 Mil. If they offered him $12Mil over two seasons, he’d have to be an idiot to turn it down……

  11. I wouldn’t say he’s no one without Brady either. He makes a lot of people miss on short passes that lots of QBs could make

  12. Gotta love Edelman, super quick, sure hands, knows what Tom wants and willing to go where many won’t. Great signing. Now let’s beef up the lines. There must be some John Hannah’s out there somewhere!

  13. Revis, Browner, Resign Edelman, Vince will be back, Mayo and Gronk coming back-more moves to come- Bingo we win again!

  14. Yea I called it.

Bill: you don’t like that deal? Ok free agency starts tomorrow, go get some offers and we will match them.

    Julian: ok sounds great!

  15. Great call Julian!! I am pumped that you are back. You are the exact type of player that Belichick wants on his team.

Hopefully, you will be a Super Bowl Champ next year. And hopefully, BB has more cap space to take care of you in 2015 and beyond. (AH cap hit in 2014)

Julian, you are truly a great team player.

One of many reasons I am happy you are my son’s favorite player.

  16. Glad he’s back. He always plays hard. Let’s hope his 16 game season wasn’t a fluke.

  17. stop acting like this guy is the second coming of anybody good. He is a product of the system, and by system, i mean coach and qb. Swap him and Robert Woods. Odds are you will see Woods put up pro bowl numbers and this clown will falter. It is all about the qb.

Remember how great Welker was? All he did was replace him, which only strengthens my argument.

  18. “Foxboro is home. Excited to be back.”

    Translation:
“Very little interest in my services elsewhere so I’m back”

  19. Good news, but there is still work to be done. They need a true pass rusher on the other side from Jones. The interior D-line rotation needs to be shored up, with or w/o Wilfork. There is need for a legitimate outside receiver. Last, Blount needs to be re-signed. With cap space left and the draft coming up, there should be no problem filling those holes. Then, it will be just a matter of getting everyone on the field to see who and who doesn’t work out.

  20. ‘Remember how great Welker was? All he did was replace him, which only strengthens my argument.’

    Billfan,

It’s true. Brady makes everyone better.

  21. Do people realize that all three of these guys are under 30? Edelman is 27, Revis is 28, and Brownerr is 29. Is Bill widening Brady’s window? It looks that way to me. This isn’t the Broncos “win now” two-year plan. This is reloading for now and five years from now.

  22. “Dalton > Brady”

. . . and Cincinnati is a more urbane city than Boston, with better schools, better hospitals, more history, and the best looking women in the world. If you are going to live in a fantasy world go all the way.

  23. “stop acting like this guy is the second coming of anybody good. He is a product of the system, and by system, i mean coach and qb. Swap him and Robert Woods. Odds are you will see Woods put up pro bowl numbers and this clown will falter. It is all about the qb.

Remember how great Welker was? Oh yeah, I forgot. trade Talib, Spikes, Wilfork and Blount for Revis…..better team?????

    Hey DLK47823

Spikes is in Buffalo but with Jamie Collins we surely did not need him anymore and with Ridley and Vereen not so sure we need Blount unless he wants to come back dirt cheap- did you seen what Ben Tate and Darren McFadden signed for?? RB’s are getting shafted this offseason. As far as I know Wilfork is still a Patriot so you should correct yourself. When you re sign your #1 pass catcher, add 2 of the best 4 corners in the NFL and have Gronk returning that is certainly a much better team. Last piece will be a James Jones/Brandon LaFell/Santonio Holmes type and maybe a Tony Gonzalez who never filed his retirement paperwork.
    Peace

  25. Lots of guys can catch a decent number of balls when you get over 150 forced your way. He’s a 4th WR at best on any team with a respectable WR core. That said he’d be the No. 3 on the Jets. That’s more an indictment of our situation than a compliment to Mr. Fingers.

  26. Say all you want about Brady making Edelman a better receiver, but remember, Edelburger is also the all-time leading punt returner. Brady has nothing to do with that.

  27. Amazing how so many fans would have loved it if their team would have signed Edelman, but because he signs back with the Patriots, he’s “overrated” and “average”. Have fun looking forward to your respective team’s draft. Patriots fans look forward to January

  28. Great signing but can’t stop just with Edelman. They need much more on offense if they are going to beat out the Broncos. If Gronk comes back healthy and doesn’t absorb any more cheap shots, that’s fine, but Brady needs some more targets to throw to, either picked up in the draft, a trade or free agency.

  29. People will be surprised at how much better their rush is now that they have Revis and Browner and a young athletic linebacker (Collins) with a year under his belt who can cover. Bill has not blitzed much the last few years but we will see a lot more of it this year.

You realize the 49ers cheated the salary cap twice when they won the Super Bowl, right?

  32. I want to see the Pats use Edelman in a role similar to what the Seawawks did with Percy Harvin in the Super Bowl (4.5 40 versus Harvin’s 4.4). There is a reason he is so good at punt returns and getting him the ball on the move will create problems for opposing defenses.

  33. They didn’t even have the cap until 1994, smart guy.

The last time the team won was that season, so how can they cheat twice, smart guy?

Finding the financial cracks in the cap and exploiting them is smart businness, smart guy.

Video taping other teams is cheating. They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t help. That’s why Mangini turned them in.

0 Super Bowl wins since SpyGate.

Sure Pats can get Sanders and Allen, just have to cut Brady to free up the 15 million!

    ************************************************

No need for that!!! What about releasing scarrington, scrubovich, and some other scrubs on the team?

  35. This week’s celebration of the greatest dynasty in sports history ( only NFL dynasty developed during a salary cap era) is just icing on the cake to the additions this week. Vaphinfan…Johnson +Marino + Jaguars = embarrassment and appropriate way for Danny Boy to end his unfulfilling, title-less career.

  36. Pats need to trade Wilfork for a mid round pick. He’s coming off of a horrible injury and isn’t worth the price. That would add 7.5 mil to the 15mil they already have in salary cap space. Then use that 22.5 mil to sign Allen and Williams. Allen provides the pass rusher they need and Williams can easily replace Vince. Plus Williams gets paid half as much.

If it’s just “smart business ” then why did they get fined and lose draft picks?

Because it’s against the rules, therefore it’s cheating!

49ers ZERO SB since cheating the salary cap.

my apologies, they cheated once. i was thinking of the Broncos who cheated twice. Anyone that thinks video taping 6 plays that cant be used in game is worse than playing with an illegal roster should have their head examined. 0 Super Bowl wins since they were caught cheating the salary cap and were fined and lost draft pics.

Really? Spygate and serial killers, owner BUYS a slore gf after his wife dies…and no SB’s after your KICKER leaves….Greatest coach of all time? who got lucky with Brady and can only come up with “Do your job”

How many YEARS since you won a SB? 10?

Not very “greatest of all time like”…

  40. Best run franchise in all of pro sports, the Miami Heat should be right there. Spygate is right there, so don’t forget about the cheats there.

  41. @jagsfan1:

First, thank you for standing behind your team, the Jaguars.

Second, for all of your criticism, you’d love for the Jags to have the history the Patriots have had over the last 15 years.

  42. @andrewluck12:

It’s really more about calling out fans of teams that are far less successful who just run their mouths about how bad New England is. God bless those that actually tell us who they root for. Most of the haters on this board are just pot shot taking punks.

If people just said, “I hate the Patriots because they keep winning,” that would be acceptable.

But that’s not the case. They continue to attack the legacy, as if it will change. Under Belichick:

    11 Division Titles
    8 Conference Title Games
    5 Conference Titles
    3 Super Bowl Titles

It ain’t changing. Next year, it will be 12 division titles and 9 conference title games. I won’t predict any farther than that, but you haters are going to have to eat it.

  43. hey man, I never said the patriots weren’t successful. its just I hear patriot fans calling everyone who isn’t a fan of the team haters. I mean is it an east coast thing to say?

  44. Undefeated after spygate.
Made 2 more Superbowls after spygate
Won more game than any other team after spygate.
How many Superbowls have your team been to.
Are people really saying spygate really?how come they didn’t win the Super Bowl after going undefeated? Lost to a much inferior team . Any given Sunday.Come up with a new already.

  45. Why do inferior fans who cheer for inferior football teams think their team is worthy of even being mentioned in the same breath as the Patriots, the team who has won more Super Bowls in the last 20 years than any other team in the NFL?

    Inquiring minds need to know.

  46. Obviously the Giants cheated in the first super bowl… thats the only way to win in that league. Hard work and preparation can only go so far…

Oh, the Pats winning % is 100 points higher post “Spygate” and the rest of the AFC East is ~50% points less… i wonder who was really cheating.

  47. “The Patriots are the gold standard franchise in the NFL”

    —Shannon Sharpe

Why do inferior fans who cheer for inferior football teams think they know more about football than this guy?

    #Ireallywannaknow

  48. Obviously the Giants cheated in the first super bowl

All intelligent football fans know that faking injuries is most certainly cheating….hence I do not acknowledge either of their wins* over the Patriots.

  49. Edelman makes ONE visit and NOBODY wanted him…but resigning with the Pats is such a fabulous move….I don’t get it.
