Ike Taylor sets aside ego to continue his career in Pittsburgh

Ike Taylor AP

So what allowed Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor to take a steep pay cut from $7 million to $2.75 million in 2014?

Apart from hoping to stay with the Steelers, Taylor chose not to succumb to the dynamic that has prompted many players to decline to take less:  Pride.

Taylor explained during a Friday visit to PFT Live that he didn’t let ego get in the way of extending to 12 years a career in Pittsburgh that has entailed a couple of Super Bowl rings and another Super Bowl appearance.

Taylor also talks about where the team currently stands from a talent standpoint as the Steelers hope to end a two-year playoff drought.  For the full interview, just click the appropriate spot for clicking below.

Lol – nice try to make yourself look good. Bottom line – he stinks & he took MORE than anyone else would’ve paid for his washed up game. Can’t wait to see him getting burned again next year!

The old man needed somewhere to retire.why not the Pittsburgh retirement home steelers.

He is realistic when it comes to his age vs worth. Total Winner.

  9. dirtyharry1971 says: Mar 15, 2014 2:45 PM

a 34 year old cornerback? Excellent! Nice to see the steelers keep getting older, this team is only going to get worse while all the other teams in its divison continue to get better.

  10. doubleogator says: Mar 15, 2014 2:45 PM

How refreshing to hear this by comparison to all of the narcissistic players in today’s NFL…shows great character.

Lol!!! Steelers = last place in the division.

  13. steelhammer92 says: Mar 15, 2014 2:59 PM

Polamalu and Taylor are the only players left on defense over the age of 30. Other than Ben, the offense has to be one of the youngest in the league. The “old” jokes don’t make sense anymore. Sorry comedians.

  14. donlowery01 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:07 PM

What people dont realize is that Ike will probably play safety this year. He will be great and it will be fun to watch. The dame thing that Woodson did late in his time.

  15. donlowery01 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:07 PM

    same

  16. fleaman1381 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:10 PM

Why does everyone keep talking about how old the Steelers’ defense is (not from this article, comments only)? If you go to the official steelers web page and look at their first string defense, then do simple math (which is hard, I know) the average age is 27.5. That’s not bad at all. Add the second string guys, that get rotated in and are used in other than the base package and almost all of them are 23 and 24. As a Steelers fan I accept the fact a lot of people hate the Steelers, but at least get your facts straight and stop making things up.

  17. dcapettini says: Mar 15, 2014 3:16 PM

If Ike is so great, why is he taking a $4+m pay cut? I guess because no other team in the league agrees with you Steeler fans. This crap about him taking less money to stay with the Steelers is all bunk. he took less money because that is the best he could get. Not that $2.75m is chump change, but its far away from $7m.
Sometimes it takes a little free agency cold water to make a guy realize that his day is past. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is cut before the first game, unless they can put him on IR somehow. The Steelers are doing him a favor. If it was NY, Dallas, Chicago or Detroit, they would have cleaned out his locker and offered him a halftime retirement 5 minute ceremony during the season.

  18. patfanken says: Mar 15, 2014 3:17 PM

Good thing the Steelers did “squeeze” poor Ike, like the Pats did to Wilfolk and Edelman.

  19. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 15, 2014 3:37 PM

The reason is you just can’t pay a big stiff salary like that to a 33 year old player that only causes one TO every 8.5 games started, including 0 in the last season which is below his average. You need to save money to find some aggressive playmakers. Or to fill in the negotiating gap for your franchise QB.

  20. bearshaterseverywhere says: Mar 15, 2014 3:38 PM

    B. Marshall on Ike:

“He’s one of the best in the business,” Marshall said. “It seems like he’s getting better as he ages. I remember a few years ago playing against him in Miami. I disrespected him a little bit. I didn’t do my film study and I got out there and he did some things that really put me in a tough spot. So I’ve been going back to my Denver days and my Miami days just watching him and seeing how he played me, watching a lot of film because I have a lot of respect for this guy and no longer will I overlook him.”

All around teamplayer, we need more guys in the NFL with Ike’s attitude!

  21. bigbenownsthenfl says: Mar 15, 2014 3:41 PM

he learned from the sins of james Harrison. what not to do! gonna be a young defense, hungry ready to gobble up the afc north…6 lombardis haters!!!

I am not sure where this poster gets that Steeler fans are saying Ike is great. Most steeler fans would agree that he needed to take less to return to the team this year. I find it no surprise that the Steelers are treating a player in a caring manner unlike the ravens.
Also aren’t you the troll who complains about steeler fans on raven threads? Thought so….pathetic.

  23. steel2372 says: Mar 15, 2014 3:59 PM

I am liking the moves the Steelers are making on defense to get younger. Mitchell signing is perfect! Now if we can just sign a few more we will be good. Draft will bring us a good rb and receiver and cornerback We got this. No way this team finishes last in the division next season.

  24. bengalguy says: Mar 15, 2014 4:06 PM

Lol. Stiller fans, ya know, all you haters that were bashing this guy the last 2 years, & up to about 2 hours ago were saying ” GOOD RIDDENCE!”
It’s not so much th “core” age of you team that makes you old, it’s the 3 or 4 impact players that makes you old.
2 of your 3 best players on Offense are considered on the downside of their career, (Big Jen & Heathbar Miller)….A.Brown is the only “Valuable” player on Offense who doesn’t Social Security.
And on Defense, your 2 best players are WAY OVER THE HILL ( Toast Taylor @ The Head & Shoulders guy ). The only reason Taylor came back is because he saw the writing on the wall…….NOBODY wants a 35 year old CB…….ESPECIALLY one thats not that good.
Good luck missin the PLAYOFFS again, and STILL BEING IN CAP HELL for another year!!!!!
Just think, after the geriatric club FINALLY retires you can hire them all to work inside Ketchup Bottle Stadium year round and shine all your beautiful trophies!

Shining trophies is not something you have to worry about in one-and-done-ville so I guess that gives you time to obsess about a real team that wins playoff games.

  29. steelcurtainn says: Mar 15, 2014 5:03 PM

True Professional. No wonder he’s a steeler. It’ll be fun watching him shutdown the ravens lame receivers again.

All those reasons, plus he’s not very good.

  31. sammyias says: Mar 15, 2014 5:19 PM

Have to appreciate Ike, a true class act. A few Steeler fans could learn a lesson in class from him.

    I said … “A few”

I won’t be upset to see Ike play well in his 12th season with the Steelers. He’s not on “my” team, but he doesn’t have to be to earn my respect.

Funny, but it didn’t happen once last year so old and slow Smith will make a difference ? Ah, the funny off season dreams of the raven fans……amusing.

  35. Deb says: Mar 15, 2014 5:38 PM

Thanks for that interview. Rare to find a player who understands the Big Picture of diminishing skills, cap demands, and the value of playing an entire career with one organization. Ike is that rare athlete. I’ve always loved the guy, never more than when he issued that agonizing apology to Steelers fans for the blown coverage in the playoff loss to Denver a couple of seasons ago. He’s a class act, demonstrating it again today.

  36. jmblosser82 says: Mar 15, 2014 5:48 PM

Ben, Heath, Troy, Ike, and Gay are the only starters projected to be 30+ if I am not mistaken. Maybe Cotchery if Sanders leaves and they want the young guys to play 3 WR.

  37. mackcarrington says: Mar 15, 2014 5:49 PM

Is it pride and ego or is it just the nature of the business? I understand that he probably wants to end his career in the Burg, but he also probably didn’t get any other offers better than the one he took. If he would have gotten 3M somewhere else he would have been gone. I find it fascinating that fans put athletes on pedestals and call them “so classy” when they take less money. They take less because it’s usually their only or best option.

  38. iwishwvuwouldbeatbama says: Mar 15, 2014 6:15 PM

No my friends, not pride, not lack of ego.. Only Lack Of Options. It was the best deal he could land. This is obvious even for me a lifetime Steelers fan.

  39. darocnessmonsta says: Mar 15, 2014 6:27 PM

Wish Demarcus Ware did the same his ego made him think hes gonna win a ring in Denver my guess is Denver wont have same success as last yr and he wont live up to the contract, good jod Ike atleast someone gets it!!!

  40. surfinbird1 says: Mar 15, 2014 6:47 PM

    Are you listening Vince.

  41. jmblosser82 says: Mar 15, 2014 8:13 PM

bengalguy, so they are old and slow now because a handful of players are 30+? Hardly. They were old and slow 2 years ago before they started to cut the age. Now they have veteran leadership on both sides if the ball and are getting younger.

  42. scoobies05 says: Mar 15, 2014 8:56 PM

just a little back and forth with my man crown. I’m sure he got the joke

  43. scoobies05 says: Mar 15, 2014 9:58 PM

and you do realize the ravens beat the Steelers. but your delusions only start when the season starts

  44. blackngold4life says: Mar 15, 2014 10:59 PM

Troy should have done the same thing ..

  45. blackngold4life says: Mar 15, 2014 11:20 PM

And im sure he’ll get more then 2m by the time the season is over

  46. whutevr says: Mar 16, 2014 7:46 PM

I can see there are a lot of Steelers fans here voting down some of the critical comments. But, I’m a huge Steelers fan and truth is, Ike isn’t so hot anymore. Look it up…he had some of the worst stats for cornerbacks last season. You’re lying to yourself if you don’t remember his big misses during crucial moments. He better be doing some extra training this offseason. He needs it.

  47. candrwells says: Mar 17, 2014 10:24 AM

    @bengalguy

The difference between the Bengals and Steelers is simply this….

When one team enters the playoffs, they exit just as quickly.

When the other team enters the playoffs, they have a chance to win it all.

  48. jimmyjames65 says: Mar 17, 2014 5:23 PM

Ravens will have a top 10 offense and defense. Steelers… Not so much.

  49. chatroot says: Apr 13, 2014 1:28 AM

Ike Taylor is stand up player on the field and off. Each summer since 2005 Taylor has run the FaceMeIke Football Camp in New Orleans for local youth. I personally saw him in weirton west virgina today cheering on his youngest son playing kids flag football he was a nice guy. More nfl players should take an example from this guy. Not to mention Taylor continues to play well consistantly in playoff games when it counts.
