James Jones to Panthers: “Yoo hoo, I’m over here.”

With the Panthers beginning to stretch their legs in free agency, the guys they haven’t contacted are raising their hands.

Packers free agent James Jones is sending out word that he too would be interested in filling in a blank depth chart.

I would love the opportunity to play for the Carolina Panthers,” Jones told Josina Anderson of ESPN. “I would love to play with Cam [Newton].”

The fact that he has to say so doesn’t make it seem like they were beating down his door previously.

Other than some reported interest from the Jets, there hasn’t been much action for Jones. The 29-year-old has been productive the last two years, but hasn’t drawn a lot of attention on the open market.

As free agency approaches its second week and financial expectations recede, there may be more of a market for him.

  1. Jones is a great player, only problem is he’s not very fast and he doesn’t get good seperation so he needs a qb like Rodgers who’s every pass is on the money.

  2. He wants major coin but isn’t likely to get it. Too bad the Vikings didn’t wait one year. This guy has more upside than Jennings. I would welcome him back in Green Bay but pride oftentimes interferes and causes these guys to go elsewhere…. even if their best move would be to stay put.

  3. Jones doesn’t have the flash that teams look for, coupled with his age…

He’s been a solid complimentary receiver for a long time now, but that is not what is going to bring in the $$$

  4. James Jones might be worth more if he could reliably catch passes… Rodgers made him look better than he actually is.

  5. Some people thought Eric Decker would get a huge deal after putting up enormous numbers with the Broncos, but he had to settle for less than expected. Teams figured that the WR2 in a high powered offense with weapons everywhere and a Hall of Fame QB would probably produce less taken out of that system.

Same deal for James Jones, who is 4 years older than Decker and has been a WR2/WR3 for the Packers for most of his career. Teams are getting smarter about understanding the importance of system and QB in evaluating WR numbers.

  6. According to a new study published by the University of Manitoba, internet trolls — people who commonly lurk on message boards and post offensive material to get a rise out of people — exhibit anti-social behavior in their offline settings as well.

The research, conducted by University of Manitoba Erin Buckels and two colleagues, revealed that those who trolled online also tended to have the “Dark Tetrad of personality” — featuring traits of “sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism.”

The Canadian researchers defined trolling as the “practice of behaving in a deceptive, destructive, or disruptive manner in a social setting on the Internet with no apparent instrumental purpose.”

The study concluded that “enjoyment of other online activities, such as chatting and debating, was unrelated to sadism. Thus cyber-trolling appears to be an Internet manifestation of everyday sadism.”

The STEELERS haven’t even been to the playoffs since 2011, where they lost a wild card game against TIM TEBOW.

The VIKINGS haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1977, and have never won one.

The REDSKINS haven’t even been to the NFC Championship since they last won a Super Bowl 22 years ago.

  7. This isn’t even a case if beggars can’t be choosers. This is a case of beggars being offered something viable. Gettleman better sign him or there’s going be riots on Mint St.

  8. Come back to Green Bay.

Remember the ecstasy of winning a World Championship and having a parade with literally EVERYBODY in the entire city showering you with glory? You can relive that again, if you want.

  9. Based on the behavior of the Panther’s front office, they act like a team that doesn’t plan to field any wide receivers next year.

  10. Well they better do something soon. If I were Gettleman, I’d be on the phone to James Jones, Nate Burleson, Mario Manningham, Sidney Rice, and even Kenny Britt. Who else is left?

  11. Some of you are nuts. Yes, Jones has played with some great QB’s but he’s also made his share of great, acrobatic catches. He’s not a game breaker but those types are rare as it is. There’s a golden opportunity here to pick up a hard working, accountable, productive WR for not a lot of money. At this point he’s going to be a bargain for someone.

  12. Hmmm……..referring to the conclusions in the University of Manitoba study reported by reptar310, which team’s fan base lies closet to Manitoba (and was the principal reason the study was conducted in the first place)?

  13. Crazy this guy hasn’t had more interest. He’s a solid receiver and I doubt he will look for some big payday.

Just another example of how clueless so many front offices are and why there are only really a handful of year in, year out top teams.

  14. i knew it. whenever a player leaves for a different team packers fans say the same crap about a guy they loved the previous year ” too old, didnt like him, was way overpaid, too slow, traitor etc etc etc. remember how the god of all football gods, favre was when he came back to lameblow and toasted the pack? then you hated his guts too. get over it. players like a place with more than 1 motel six and 2 gas stations. iv’e been to green bay. nice stench from the paper mills. i swear, if rodgers ever left, not saying he will, probably wont, but you fans would say….he was never good anyway. asking too much money etc etc etc. it is hysterically 2 faced.

  15. The research, conducted by University of Manitoba Erin Buckels and two colleagues, revealed that those who trolled online also tended to have the “Dark Tetrad of personality” — featuring traits of “sadism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism.”

so? they act like those are bad traits. they arent. they are to be admired.

  16. Not last year (2013), but the year before James Jones LEAD the NFL in TD receptions with 14.

His problem is he is only the third best WR in Green Bay. He’s good, not $10 mil a year good, but he would be worth signing at the right price.

His second biggest problem is that GB has a WR who is ready to replace him at 10% of the cost and when you are building a championship roster, you need solid contributors at bargain basement prices.

  17. oh oh. jones is 29!!! every packer fan says as soon as a player hits 30, he has zero value. then why did you pick up peppers? rodgers turned 30 3 months ago. why dont you cut him too? because to a packer fan unless you are 22 or 23 years old, you have no player value and should be paid league minimum

  18. “I would love the opportunity to play for the Carolina Panthers,” Jones told Josina Anderson of ESPN. “I would love to play with Cam [Newton].”

now why would jones say that? i thought green bay had a 1600 man roster and there were no other teams in the league? doesnt he have loyalty?

  19. Swallow your pride James and have your agent contact the Packers. Your not a # 1 receiver. You know Rodgers will get the ball to you.

how many times did he get the ball to him after the one bear game when he got planted? oh right that never happened and was made up by packer hating sportswriters

  20. Not last year (2013), but the year before James Jones LEAD the NFL in TD receptions with 14.

His problem is he is only the third best WR in Green Bay. He’s good, not $10 mil a year good, but he would be worth signing at the right price.

does this money come right out of your 401k or something? good god, grow up

  21. why do the packer players even want money? isnt it enough to play for such a storied franchise? also, look at what these guys are getting!! 2 mill 8 mill 16 mill? what was bart starr and jim talor and jerry kramer paid? nothing even close to that amount. gb players are incredibly selfish.

  22. Gettleman is busy scouting the conveyor belt on the North Tryon St. Kispy Kreme. Mmmm, they’re best when hot, huh Dave?

WR tryouts Monday 1:00 at Freedom Park.

  23. Jones needs to call Greg Jennings and ask him what it is like to go from Aaron Rodgers to another QB. It took Jennings 9 or 10 weeks to finally get to the point where he could adjust to horribly thrown passes and catch them. Jones will have even more trouble because he is no where near as good as Jennings when it comes to speed and getting away from DBs to catch passes.

Don’t get me wrong, Jones is a good WR. problem is, half ofwhat WRs do is because the QB can get the ball there. Look at Jerry Rice for an example. Accurate passers for most of his career and he caught a billion passes for a trillion yards.

  24. The Packers signed the stiffs Raji and Hawk and now a “subtraction by addition” player in Peppers. And by that I don’t mean the Bears…

Hmmm another Packer receiver that has no problem getting away from Rodgers…Interesting..I would think they would be begging to play…

Jones should still be a priority for Ted unless they expect 2 WR sets…So naturally…he walks…I do hope he is signed by Carolina…

  25. You know you want him Spielman. Heck, you’d sign the Packers PA announcer if you could.
James Jones is very athletic, maybe not speedy.
He would be smart to stay a Packer and keep his #3 spot. You like living here too. Take Teds offer for 2 years $5 mil. Check your ego at the door for the chance at another SB ring.

  26. Now if he said “I want to go to Washington and play for RGlll”, he’d be the first receiver ever to do say that.

  27. Gettleman is going to sign every FA receiver that wears 89 (see related story on Jerricho Cotchery) just so he can let everyone know who’s boss.

  28. Cam Newton is going to play QB and throw to himself in four different positions. You can save a lot of cap space with that. They call me Superman….and I’m here to rescue you. Gettleman has a plan and has all of the answers.

  29. Solid WR with a great personality who is worth a lot on the field and in the locker room. Don’t blame him for wanting every $ he can get, but he probably won’t get a huge payday anywhere; hope he comes back to the Pack.

  30. Solid WR, good guy in the locker room, good guy in the community. Knows how to win, veteran with a ring so he’d be an asset in a young locker room.

Carolina might not want him telling Cam what he’s doing to hurt the team though after seeing Aaron and how things are done the right way. (spare me, Carolina would give up a ton just to have a season like GB typically has, much less the institutional history GB’s had over the last 5 years)

The problem is Greg Jennings. Teams see what happened to him once he got away from GB and they don’t want that happening to their team either.

  31. Jones has improved at aggressively going after the ball. He improved from his old drop pass ways. And he is an improved downfield blocker – take a look at the Eddie Lacy highlight films on Youtube, and you can see Jones’ blocking ability.

I hope the Packers can keep him.

  32. I don’t believe there is much interest out there for him, but I can see why he would want to go to Carolina. He does a lot of things well, but which makes him a very solid WR.

The big reason he brings Carolina up is since Steve Smith is no longer there, he gets chance to be a #1 WR, but also he may be hoping to get paid as such.

  33. I would like to see Jones return to GB, but if not I wish him well. He played pretty good last year and if not for those badly injured ribs, he might not have dropped those passes late in the year.

  34. As I watched him the last half of the season, and apparently other teams have viewed the tape as well, Jones lost more than a step. His stick, he has some speed and separation. He lost it. He was covered like a blanket and did very very little.

Three touchdowns last year and he is going on 30. Way too many top receivers in the draft to invest in this guy.

Are you listening Ted? Do not take this sucker back. He is done, put a fork in him.

  35. Jones is quite a bit better than any of the hapless and tasteless Viking receivers. But that isn’t saying much.

and how many return yards compared to cordarelle patterson did he have?

  36. Jones has improved at aggressively going after the ball. He improved from his old drop pass ways. And he is an improved downfield blocker – take a look at the Eddie Lacy highlight films on Youtube, and you can see Jones’ blocking ability.

I hope the Packers can keep him.

no u dont. he’s over the hill at 29 just like ap right?

  37. It’s a shame this guy isn’t getting more attention. He would be a solid #2 WR on almost any team. The guy gritted out playing with a couple of broken ribs at the end of last year and continued to go about his business like a consummate pro.

He is a great locker room and community presence. His game has vastly improved over the last few years. he made some catches I didn’t think anyone would have any business catching.

I would love to see him back with the Packers but he is somewhat expendable. Boykin has proven to be a solid #3 WR and the team is pretty comfortable with Myles White at #4, unless someone can pass him up during preseason.

  38. Come Back to the land of Green and Gold my friend. Come back and finish your journey i.e complete your journey with the Packers. You are welcome and wanted. You are an excellent number 3 receiver in Packerland. Come home!

  39. A lot of teams soured on Jones after he had all those horrible drops in 2010. I hope they stay soured. With teams trying to stop Eddie Lacy Nelson, Cobb, and Jones will make an unstoppable trio.

  40. Early in his career, Jones had several drops (bad drops)…but the last couple years, he’s been great. I hope the Pack can re-sign him as a number 3 receiver.

  41. With Jarrett Boykin emerging, the Packers don’t need him. He’s a decent WR and from all accounts a good locker room guy, but he’s a role player, not a difference-maker. Too many front offices look for the big splash and by the time they realize they aren’t going to get it, the good-not-great players like Jones are gone.

Carolina is going to miss out. They have no shot at replacing Smith any time soon but Jones could at least replace Brandon LaFell and they could draft a future stud.

  42. In Green Bay you’re an above average player, without GB and Rodgers well no one is interested. Everyday you don’t resign with the Packers is money you’ll never make back up. There offer decreases each and everyday your on the market. Swallow hard and take their offer, otherwise you’ll be looking at the veterans minimum.

  43. A lot of teams soured on Jones after he had all those horrible drops in 2010. I hope they stay soured. With teams trying to stop Eddie Lacy Nelson, Cobb, and Jones will make an unstoppable trio.

and when they all go down by week 4, then what?

  44. On the good side:
    – Has a knack for getting open
    – Can make high degree of difficulty catches
    – Durable and will play through injuries
    – His history of drops seems to be in the past.

However, on the negative side I think he has kind of a sub par football IQ. Recently Rodgers has gotten in his face a couple times for running the wrong route. He often carries the ball in the wrong hand (i.e. not the side closest to the sideline). In the somewhat distant past he’s also made some gaffes like not staying in bounds to keep the clock running, not knowing where the first down marker is, not staying in bounds to keep the clock running.

I figure GB would probably take him back at 2yr/6M or 1yr/4M, he probably wants 3yr/12M since this is his last chance to get paid.

  45. I don’t know a thing about Dave Gettlemen, but stocking up on young wide receivers in this draft makes a lot of sense.

Also, at some point Cam has to be the undisputed leader and getting loudmouth out of the way makes a lot of sense.

The window has just now opened for Carolina and I think these efforts are to lengthen it.

I just ran a mock draft simulator for the Panthers and got the following:
    1)WR ODELL BECKHAM
    2)OT CAMERON FLEMING
    3)WR BRANDON COLEMAN
    4)CB TERRANCE MITCHELL
    5)WR DEVIN STREET
    6)S VINNIE SUNSERI
    7)WR T.J. JONES

How happy would they be with that?

  46. Last time Jones was an FA the same thing happened. He found little interest in the open market and came back to Green Bay at the Packers reduced price.

The draft is loaded with WR talent, so the Panthers could easily find a couple there. But, Jones is a highly underrated receiver. Nelson and Cobb are really good, so Jones didn’t get as many throws. He could become a #2 receiver quite easily. Honestly a two-year deal would be very good for Carolina.

With Finley likely gone, and if Jones signs elsewhere, the Packers might be the ones grabbing some WR.

  47. My take is his production dropped way off this year with only three touch downs. The year before he lit it up but not this year.
I would be surprised to see a lot of interest in the guy but am shocked there is no interest in him.

Must be the combo of three things. He is almost 30. He had a bad year last year. There is a raft of good receivers out there with better numbers and a lot of young guys in the draft this year.

Hopefully Ted doesn’t bring him back but goes for youth.

  48. Good lord, Leatherface. Do you do anything other than troll PFT to talk about the Packers?

10 comments in this one post, and certainly more on other articles today. Generally, people would call that an obsession. Of course, we all know it’s just jealousy.

  49. The Psycho Trolls from Minnesota (as described previously) are all staying up late tonight. Go to bed soon please, knowing this: The Packers own the Vikings.

  50. Someone is going to get a very good quality WR and a damn good human being at a bargain price. Thanks James and good luck. You’ll always be a Packer. Unfortunately, the salary cap forces these tough decisions for every NFL team. GB has had one of the deepest WR groups for the past 5 years so it becomes a numbers game when you have Cobb and Jordy becoming free agents next season.

  51. 10 comments in this one post, and certainly more on other articles today. Generally, people would call that an obsession. Of course, we all know it’s just jealousy.

i dont even have an account on this site

  52. You Carolina fans need to relax gettleman comes from an organization that does things the right way through the draft and and a sprinkle of free agents and cap space to sign a free agent worth the money and so far he’s improved your team from the mediocrity it was languishing in.

  53. Come Back to the land of Green and Gold my friend. Come back and finish your journey i.e complete your journey with the Packers. You are welcome and wanted. You are an excellent number 3 receiver in Packerland. Come home!

my friend? you know him personally? does he pay your bills ? good grief

  54. To all you comedians out there:

We finished 12-4 and won the NFC South, how’d your team finish?

  55. Many of these post are ridiculously Insane… You think that a reciever that led the league just 2 years ago isn’t receiving interest??? I know for a FACT he’s been contacted by Every GM in the NFL including The Panthers and Packers it’s just a numbers game! He’s not gonna play for Vet minimum etc in which some teams have attempted to try to offer… He’ll be under contract this week.. And all Nay Sayers stay tuned… And all so called Packer Backers who speak negative about James Jones shame on you!! You obviously had on blinders the past 7 seasons.. But you will see !!

The Redskins don’t want or need you James Jones. You’d be perfect for that mediocre QB in Carolina though. #HTTR
    _____
You mean the mediocre Carolina QB that is 1-0 against Bob Griffin?

As for Jones, he’d obviously be an asset for us given that we have zero WRs on the roster. I’m thinking DG wants to sign Cotchery and count on getting a super-stud WR in the draft. I think we should sign Britt as well.

  57. Jones is a solid receiver. Hed be a real good #2 on a lot of teams. The same thing happened the first time he hit FA. Noone really showed interest. The vikings offered him more money, but, seriously, obviously he resigned in green bay.

Carolina would he smart to at least see what hes looking for money-wise.
