Giants sign Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

One of the top remaining free agent cornerbacks has found a home in New York.

The Giants have agreed to terms with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on a five-year contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. According to Ralph Vacchiano ‏of the New York Daily News, the total value of the contract is $35 million.

Rodgers-Cromartie had spent the last few days in New York and had visited both the Giants and the Jets.

After starting his career in Arizona and then playing two years in Philadelphia Rodgers-Cromartie spent the 2013 season in Denver. He was at first considered likely to remain with the Broncos, but when free agency started, Denver abruptly made a move for Aqib Talib instead. That left Rodgers-Cromartie without a home.

Now Rodgers-Cromartie will upgrade a Giants secondary that needs help. And he’ll leave the Jets continuing to look for a cornerback.

  1. Great signing for the Giants. DRC consistently played well last year. However, he gets out muscled on running plays quite often.

  2. Good upgrade for the secondary. I just hope the size of this contract does not cause a problem keeping the Prince who is in a contract year this year.

  3. Prince, Thurmond, and DRC, with McBride and Hosley backing them up – major improvement at corner for the Giants. Reese is making solid moves in free agency this year.

  4. Bottom line is DRC is a definite upgrade and for much less $ than Denver had offered him. Hard not to like this for the Giants.

  5. The fact that he even considered the Jets kind of scares me but WELCOME TO #BIGBLUE.

This could be the best secondary I have seen the giants have on paper for the last decade.

Now just get back Mario, sign a DE and we are looking at Eli’s 3rd SB!!

  6. Hope him and Prince can cover for 7 seconds because we still don’t have a pass rusher worth jack.

  7. This is a one dimensional player who is very good in coverage and below average in everything else. It will be interesting to see how he pans out with the Giants given that he is somewhat of mal content and now has a lot of guaranteed money in his pocket.

  8. Giants fans are putting way to much faith in DRC, unless the Giants defensive system doesn’t rely on one-on-one coverage. DRC plays soft and will not tackle, not against the run and not against WR in the open field one-on-one. He is very much a bang or bust corner, who will give up more big plays than he makes. Good luck . . . and by the way how motivated is this guy going to be when the Broncos had offered him way more money than this 5 year $35M deal. He is going to go into every game thinking he is underpaid.

  9. Shame of it is that this move, coupled with the Thurmond and McBride signings, means that Terrell Thomas’s time as a Giant is done.

Positive is that the Giants now have a pretty deep secondary with those corners plus Amukamara and Rolle, Brown, Hill, Demps and Taylor at safety.

Now, if only they had some D-Linemen.

  10. DRC is possibly the laziest player out there. Sure, when he’s trying he’s one of the best corners. But once Eli throws a few picks into double coverage he will lose all motivation and stop trying.

  11. What is Idzik’s plan??? Does he have one??? Guess he’s looking for the next Richard Sherman since he’s done nothing to help a secondary that was the cause of every defensive breakdown last year!!!

So we have nobody but Kerley and Decker to catch the ball on the offensive side and nobody AT ALL to catch the ball on the defensive side. Guess we better sign Cro back!!

  12. The Giants offered him more guaranteed money than the Broncos Einstein. How is he going into games feeling he’s underpaid? Its amazing how even two decades into the salary cap era there are still people out there who look at numbers on a contract and think that’s what they actually are.

  13. Can Idzik explain to anyone, how the Giants with limited cap space, can make a signing that he couldn’t? He couldn’t resign Howard and is saving the cap space for what?

  14. Reminds me of that grandfather reading nursery rhymes to his grandchild. “There was this bold quarterback who guaranteed a SBIII win……and he won.The child replies in glee ” granddaddy has that team won again”

Joe Namath replies NO,I sold their collective souls to the devil.

    POOR JETS!!!

  15. Everyone saying that DRC is mediocre…GMen are running a Nickel heavy defense this year. He does well in that formation and the GMen’s NASCAR package.

    As for DLine

DE – JPP, Kiwanuka, Ojomo, Moore
    DL – Hankins, Jenkins

  16. Wow, this is great. This is a great signing, 7 million. Jerry, we all hope this translates into wins. We still have some holes though. Crossing my fingers!

  17. Did the Giants not have tape on DRC?? He played in the NFC east already and was smoked everytime. Him and Nnamdi single handely made Cruz a star. Even Santana Moss gave this dude the business. YES SANTANA MOSS

  18. Good signing, if the Giants are planning on making a superbowl run

First sign of problems, he will be the first one to quit on the team

  19. DRC for 5 years? wow, DRC is not that good of a CB. He has to be motivated to play and since he was just paid by the NJG he will be a bust. Q. Demps is also garbage. The rest of the NFC East thanks you NJG for not improving your roster and taking up cap space. LOL

  20. Looks like another solid move from the Giants.

I wonder if Danny Snyder is taking notes on how a professional organization addresses shortcomings after a disappointing season.

  21. Perhaps DRC and his agent went to the George Costanza school of Negotiation. DRC, you are supposed to hold out for more money, not decline offers and then take $20M less. SMH.

  22. Idzek’s plan, for those wondering, was to be wasting his time in Louisville today watching Teddy Bridgewater at his pro day instead of being in NJ, KNOWING that the Giants were talking to DRC.

  23. Great signing as long as they use him correctly. He’s a bit of a finesse CB who is at his best playing off-man coverage where he can use his elite recovery speed to read and react to a receiver coming out of his break

  24. hey New Jersey Giant fans good luck with DRC he dosent tackle and dosent play “team” defense and with NO pass rush you are in big trouble

  25. Wish there was someway, somehow we could keep T2. A great feel-good story and he has the toughness the secondary needs.

All in all, pretty pleased with this signing of DRC. Will miss Tuck though.

  26. Good signing for Giants…They’ll need allot of shutouts with Eli and that PATHETIC OFFENSE.

  27. Not sure why giants fans are getting so excited. DRC is lazy and the least versatile corner out there. He even considered retirement a year ago that’s how little he cares about football. He can only play man, and gets bodied around by big WR and blown by with speed WR. Giants should know as they lit him up while in Philly. Now that he has is money, don’t expect any effort.

  28. He is just good enough to be slightly above average. He gets beat by big receivers and he over plays the double move, which he has the speed to make up for, but doesn’t always get back in time. Waste of money. You should invested in another CB, Cro is better. Not to mention he gets killed in the run game. This guy wasn’t just let go for no reason. Good Luck NYG fans. I hope he pans out for you and has learned from his past mistakes.

Anybody who thinks those Eagles are going to be easily beat this year. Should look a little closer. They have enough D to win the division. They need another safety and a pass rusher with a bit more explosiveness and they may get past the first round. 10 wins again this year. That should win the division.

  29. The idea that DRC signing with the Giants is somehow a slight at the Jets is absurd.

Looking at the way Idzik has operated so far, he is clearly not going to pay this kind of money when he knows the Jets are years away from contention. I think Decker was an exception due to their truly desperate need at WR.

There’s no word that the Jets even offered DRC a contract. My guess is that Idzik was looking to nab him at a bargain price and decided to take a pass when he discovered what he would cost. If the Jets wanted him badly enough, they had the space to make it happen.

  30. To make something clear, 7-9 isn’t a bad record, and 9-7 isn’t a good record. 7-9 to 9-7 are pretty middling. Yes, that means the Giants won a Super Bowl in 2011 after a pretty middling regular season. What else could one call it? They gave up 6 more points than they scored, and got beat by the Packers and Niners, and blown out by the Saints (the other 3 NFC division winners).

Luckily for the 2011 Giants, 9-7 was good enough to win the division, and then they did play very well in the post-season. But 1 game above or below .500 isn’t “good” or “bad”.

  31. We Eagles fans were pretty thrilled when they signed this guy 3 years ago. We were even more thrilled when they let him go last year.

Giants fans, don’t bet the bank on this guy he’s an ocean of talent and a creeks worth of heart and determination.

  32. Did the Giants not learn anything from seeing what a waste DRC was with the Eagles. Can’t wait to see him get burned by the Eagles twice a yr. He gave up in the Superbowl once they were down by 2 scores.

  33. Good signing! Don’t know what the Bronco’s methodology was, but Talib is only a marginal upgrade if that.

The Giants got a real upgrade.

  34. 15 mil guaranteed – safe to say his agent played the Jets & Giants off each other pretty well.

  35. I remember a lot of the geniuses on here also saying the Jets were a 2 or 3 win team last year..

  36. He might have dogged it in philly but he had a very good season in Denver last year. His yards allowed per snap in coverage was 5th best in the NFL behind only Revis, Sherman, Keenan Lewis and Haden. He was pretty much a total shutdown CB last year. You haters are hating a bit too much.

  37. Solid signing for the Giants, but I think they have bigger needs at other positions instead of spending so much on a CB. Top priority should be to fix the offensive line, and second should be to bolster the pass rush. JPP is the only pass rushing talent on that line right now, so their draft should be dedicated to lineman

  38. Justin Tuck contributed 11 sacks to the stats sheets last season, but 9.5 of those were in 3 games (to be fair, 3 very good to great games by him), and there was no pass rush coming from him in the other 13 games.

The Giants offense, first the offensive line, second the running backs, third the tight end position (no blocking and no receiving), fourth the split end position (Hakeem Nicks couldn’t get separation with a court order) and fifth (but not least) Manning all had awful years. The offense was where the Giants trouble was, and despite it all the team still finished 7-9. For what was viewed as a lousy year by Giant management and the fan base, 7-9 isn’t a bad record.

The Giants could win the NFC East in 2014. Their off-season moves seem pretty smart. Of course, plenty of things could go wrong (even without serious injuries) and (like most any team) they could go 6-10 or worse.

  39. It doesn’t matter how many pass rushers you have if your guys can’t cover… Remember that Yets fans when your watching Milliner and Walls chase guys into the endzone all season.

  40. Easy there G boys. My patriots have had a stellar off season, kinda reminds me of 2007. Just remember one thing Super Bowls are not won in March.

  41. he can’t and won’t tackle. he was a bust for the cards and we were glad to see him go.

  42. This is the third or forth time I’ve seen comments about ojomo being a giant, they released him last year and last I checked he was with the titans. Great move w drc, but we need a pass rush

  43. The Eagles running backs are estactic. Mr I cannot tackle is now with the Giants and they get him twice a year. Big Blue continues to remove any doubt of them gaining last place in the East.

  44. Thrilled the Jets did not completely overpay for this guy like Giants did, which they will regret for years. Guy has talent but no heart, he isn’t even sure he wants to play football anymore.

Idzik is showing remarkable patience and will not overpay for sub standard talent. $35 million for this guy you gotta be nuts.

Meanwhile the Giants have no pass rush and no money left…great going Reece – enjoy another terrible year defensively.

  45. Who let the empty trophy case clan in on the Giants thread? You fools have tried to win a Superbowl for 50+ years, and failed every single time. Theres a word in the English language for your circumstances: LOSERS.

  46. I’ll give the Giant fan base 6 games and they’ll be pulling their hair out with this guy. The Eagle, Cowboy and Redskin receivers are jumping up and down thrilled that their numbers just went through the roof. D.R.C. will leave 10 yds. of cushion and will never make a tackle after the catch.

  47. Everyone is so quick to forget what little effort DRC puts on the field as long as he’s getting paid. He’ll be one of this year’s biggest FA busts.

  48. They now have four players qualified to start at cornerback, but no replacements for Linval Joseph or David Baas. They may soon need to replace Kevin Boothe and Chris Snee. They need better players than Will Beatty and Jacquian Williams. What is Reese thinking?

  49. I like to think of myself as pretty objective when it comes to my opinions about football, I know there is not a lot of that on these thhreads so bare with me. There is not a single person out there that can defend this acquisition who has watched any football the last five years unles you are wearing your “big blue colored glasses”. This guy is the Albert Haynesworth of DB’s, his play was inconsistent and his effort lackadaisical at best throughout his career, now that he got his money, you can wave any effort goodbye. At least Haynesworth had 1-2 monster years knowing he had free agency coming up, this guy had his best year in a while in a contract year and still wasn’t great. Another in a long line of questionable moves by an organization that was vey well run for a decade. This guy will be a bust, guaranteed.

  50. For everyone questioning DRC’s heart, he specifically stated that the retirement comments were based on the fact that he only had a 1 year contract, and if he was to under perform, he would basically be done in the NFL.

Secondly, he’s also stated how highly he regards Antrel Rolle. I’m sure Rolle, as a defensive captain for the Giant’s, will provide DRC with all the motivation he needs to perform.

Everyone doubting DRC will see. This is the perfect fit for him. This secondary will be beastly.

  51. LOL another great move for Giant fans. Getting a “ME” guy. Giant fans better hope they don’t look as bad as they did last year. If they do, DRC will stoop down to that level – buyer beware.

  52. He’s a bum……he should find something to do professionally that he enjoys doing, it sure ain’t football………disgruntled Eagles fan here!

  53. WITH ALL THE MOVES GIANTS HAVE MADE IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE AN ALL OFFENCE DRAFT.TAYLOR LEWEN WITH THE KID FROM KC AND PUGH WITH SNEE LEAVES LEWEN AND PUGH OUTSIDE WITH SWARTZ AND SNEEE INSIDE.IF BEATTY COMES BACK HEALTHY EVEN BETTER BUT WE HAVE TO DRAFT BEST CENTER IN DRAFT.THEN A TIGHT END AND A WR AND A RUNNING BACK FOR DEPTHTHEN THE GIANTS ARE COMPLETE.WHICH EVER ORDER IT HAPPENS IT DOESNT MATTER.NOW SURROUND ELI WITH YOUNG PLAYMAKERS AND YOU WIN THE DIVISION.

  54. FIRST PIC IN THE DRAFT SHOULD BE LEWEN ,MIKE EVANS OR ZAC MARTAIN.NOT SHORE EBRON CAN RUN BLOCK.EVERY HIGHLIGHT SHOWS HE HAS GREAT HANDS BUT DONT SEE MUCH RUN BLOCKING.EVANS A PLAYMAKER AND LEWEN AND MARTIN PROVIDES MORE DEPTH WHICH WE NEED.SECOND PIC SHOULD BE A CENTER NO QUESTIONS ASKED.GET THE BIGGEST NASTIEST CENTER IN THE DRAFT.THIRD A RB TO ADD DEPTH.4 TH A TIGHT END AND NOW YOUR TEAM IS COMPLETE.RUBEN RANDLE AND JERRINAGANS SHOULD BE FINE.THE TIGHT END FROM NORTE DAME IS A BIG BULLDOZER AND SHOULD BE THERE FOR THE GIANTS.I WOULD SAY GIANTS GOING TO GET MIKE EVANS OR TAYLOR LEWEN FIRST PIC.

  55. D.R.C. That stands for Doesn’t Really Care. Between DRC and Quentin Demps the Ginas picked up two Eagles cast offs and the blue faithful are crowing like they just signed Deion and Ronnie Lott.

I can’t wait to see the Eagles receiving corps leave these two Stiffs in the dust.
