The Bears have further bolstered their numbers at a position of need.

The club announced Tuesday it had reached one-year agreements with safeties Danny McCray and Craig Steltz.

McCray, 26, made 10 starts for Dallas on defense in 2012. Last season, the fifth-year pro notched eight special teams tackles for the Cowboys. Like Steltz, McCray is an LSU product.

Steltz, 27, appeared in 16 games for the Bears last season, recording 23 tackles. Steltz, who enters his seventh NFL campaign, ranked among Chicago’s leaders in special teams tackles in 2013.

The Bears now have five safeties on the roster, three of which were with other teams a season ago. Chicago added M.D. Jennings (Packers) and Ryan Mundy (Giants) last week, and Steltz and free safety Chris Conte are currently the only holdovers from 2013.

Never heard of McCray, but I always felt Craig Steltz was a better option than either Wright or Conte.

    Nice moves by Emery.

5 sub-par safeties combined are still better than Major Wright.

    They re-signed Steltz? Thanks.

A lot of depth with no clear starter. I think that #14 overall pick might go to a safety.

Apparently, Emery is going with quantity over quality at the safety position. What could go wrong?

    Oh, right….

Emery is collecting players to evaluate. I would expect two of these players to make the final roster and the rest jettisoned. I agree another will be drafted.

I still don’t feel good about the defense, but luckily I trust PHIL EMERY and his plan.

McCray was a good special teams player for Dallas although his production was down last season. When given a chance to contribute at safety, it didn’t work out so good.
