Cam Newton needs ankle surgery, four-month recovery

The Panthers don’t have any receivers to throw to at the moment, so it’s probably not that big of a deal the quarterback will be on the shelf for a few months.

The team announced that Cam Newton would have ankle surgery tomorrow in Charlotte, and will need four months of recovery time.

“The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it,” Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement from the team.

The good news for the Panthers is he’s in familiar hands, as renowned foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson is one of their team doctors.

The other good news is, there’s no risk of losing continuity during OTA practices, since every receiver he knows is gone, and the Panthers are starting from scratch at the position.

Uh, oh. Better draft a QB. Chronic ankle problems are career enders.

  2. raiders4lyfe17 says: Mar 18, 2014 3:55 PM

Well now he can’t throw to himself

  3. DaveKShape says: Mar 18, 2014 3:55 PM

I get why these guys wait a little while after the season is over to do these surgeries just to see if it gets better naturally… but it’s been almost two months.

You figure he and the team would want to nip it in the bud to have more time to get ready for OTAs and camp. But what do I know? He’s only their QB.

  29. scmems07 says: Mar 18, 2014 4:16 PM

Not sure why panther fans are surprised with the lack of moves in free agency, if they bring in a few free agents they won’t be able to afford the $25 mil a year he and his agent is going to demand. And be honest panther fans, if they don’t give it to him you all will cry foul, if they do and they can’t afford to build a team around him, you all will cry foul.

  30. csmall96 says: Mar 18, 2014 4:16 PM

    Poor Greg Olsen.

  31. patriotinvasion says: Mar 18, 2014 4:16 PM

Yikes. Looked like the Panthers were legitimate Super Bowl contenders last year and a real team on the rise. Now I’m not so sure what to think.

  32. thirdistheworrd says: Mar 18, 2014 4:18 PM

It’s hard to understand why people are so keen to see exciting young quarterbacks (or any players for that matter) go down, or have their careers put in jeopardy. I really don’t care about the success of the Panthers, but it’s strange how many NFL fans went from six to midnight at the thought of Newton, Kaepernick, or Griffin not living up to their full potential. Good players playing well makes the whole game better for everybody.

  33. salscobrakai says: Mar 18, 2014 4:18 PM

Seeing as how they have no receivers I assume they are going to the triple option? Going to need healthy ankles Cam.

  34. themackstrong says: Mar 18, 2014 4:19 PM

Watching Cam Newton play, I think he is a truly a gifted athlete and has a cannon arm. When he scrambles I think his ego still wants to treat defenders like it was college. He takes so many hits trying to get an extra 2 yards or make the take it to the house play. Most QBs wouldn’t get up unfazed most times like he did but it takes it toll.

  35. hawksforever says: Mar 18, 2014 4:24 PM

Looks like Tebow is destined to play for the Panthers!

  36. snoqualmkanem says: Mar 18, 2014 4:25 PM

Perception, Panthers worse, SF not so good, Saints the same, maybe not so good…

Which teams will step up in 2014? Giants? AZ? Rams? Eagles?

  37. turfdaddy says: Mar 18, 2014 4:26 PM

I don’t get all the hate for Cam. All he’s done is turn a team around along with Ron Rivera. He’s gone from a 4 win (or something like that) team to a 12-4 team. Rivera has built one of the best defenses in the league.

And everyone wants to dog them both out? Rivera was Coach of the Year last year. Cam’s been to two Pro Bowls in THREE YEARS!!!

  38. sumkat says: Mar 18, 2014 4:28 PM

who hit him in the ankle with cryptonite?

  39. dvdman123 says: Mar 18, 2014 4:31 PM

From first to worst…..they will be the Falcons/Texans of 2013 in 2014. You bank on that.

  40. purpleguy says: Mar 18, 2014 4:32 PM

Maybe they can hire that little kid from the commercial that’s stretching his arm.

  41. tavisteelersfan says: Mar 18, 2014 4:34 PM

What the heck is going on with this team. I rooted for the Panthers late last year and into the playoffs. Now they seem less functional than the Raiders or Cowboys. What is up with this Gettleman character.
    Cut Smith.
    No receivers.
Then a gimpy QB … in the latter part of March saying he needs surgery and 4 months of recovery (that’s mid July).
I want to like them. I want to like the Lions too. I don’t seem to get what I want (except the Steelers).

  42. toybkshr says: Mar 18, 2014 4:35 PM

Looks like this team is destined to take a couple step backwards this season.

  43. qdog112 says: Mar 18, 2014 4:45 PM

The only man who could hold Michael Jordan under 25, was his college coach, Dean Smith. The only one to hold the Panthers under 10 wins this year … Dave Gettleman.

Dave’s new book: NFL for Dummies or is it NFL by a Dummy.

  44. trollaikman8 says: Mar 18, 2014 4:45 PM

I would do the same if Rae Carruth was better than my current #1 WR.

  45. allhailkingflacco says: Mar 18, 2014 4:45 PM

Now it all makes sense. Why would you have any receivers on the payroll if you don’t have a QB.

See, there really is a method to Gettleman’s madness.

I just can’t believe this stuff …. lol

  46. webofbelief says: Mar 18, 2014 4:56 PM

Could this offseason get any worse for the Panthers?

  48. nygmann says: Mar 18, 2014 5:11 PM

  49. dfwhawkguy says: Mar 18, 2014 5:19 PM

And… better luck to the Panthers in 2015-16…

  50. vikescry1 says: Mar 18, 2014 5:20 PM

this is bad news for panther fans, not a lot of time to get on the same page with his new receivers. it’s bad enough that they haven’t signed a receiver yet and now this?? and how long were they planning on waiting?? what a poor decision, someone should be fired for the way they handled this. sorry panther fans but your team isn’t going to do well this year. i hope for your sake management gets their heads out of their arses and you guys can rebound next year.

  51. blackshirtz says: Mar 18, 2014 5:20 PM

Cam doesn’t want receivers. Rumor has it he will even play 2014 with one hand tied behind his back.

  52. noffy32 says: Mar 18, 2014 5:29 PM

And now the truth for the mass exit of receivers.

  53. riekki says: Mar 18, 2014 5:29 PM

i’m a Panthers fan and i still believe…i’m listening to a local sports talk host…with a C…tell us all that the sky is falling now that Cam is having surgery.

of course 6 months ago the same guy was saying Cam was a bust and the Panthers needed to move on.

i think Cam hurt his ankle mid-season and played on (maybe he is Superman)

Gettleman is the boss…the buck stops with him…this team is imploding from top to bottom and Nero (Gettleman) continues to fiddle while Rome burns. The Steve Smith PR debacle was unnecessary and uncalled for and this will come back to haunt Gettleman and the Panthers in 2014. Expect a team of bums, stiffs, and scrubs and a last place finish in the NFC South. Total implosion. (See the handling of Steve Smith)

That big S on his chest is for SORE ankle.

  59. vikingspride says: Mar 18, 2014 6:11 PM

I think Gettleman is thinking too much into the old saying “Defense wins championships!”…… You still need an offense Dave! and having an offense includes taking care of and tracking the health of your Premier QB. I hope for the sake of, not just Panthers fans, but NFL fans everywhere this guy is fired and never heard from again.

  68. jagsfan1 says: Mar 18, 2014 8:02 PM

Smart move….tried to let it heal – wasn’t working – go surgery route and be ready for training camp.

    What’s the problem?

All these other teams you are worried about? They might have injuries and qb’s going down during the season….not saying he can’t get hurt again – but this is the smart move – more time to heal post surgery before the season starts.

  69. Ferdinand says: Mar 18, 2014 8:24 PM

Why is he just getting it done now? He could have taken a couple of weeks off after the season ended to rest, go on a vacation, whatever and then had the surgery and built in several extra weeks of recovery/rehab time just in case he needed a couple of more weeks to fully heal and still be ready to rejoin the team and team activities without any delays.

  70. 7mantel says: Mar 18, 2014 8:29 PM

  71. nygmann says: Mar 18, 2014 8:47 PM
