Cotchery meeting wraps up in Carolina, will choose between Panthers and Steelers

The Panthers’ search for a wideout who caught a pass in 2013 continued with a visit from Jerricho Cotchery on Monday and Tuesday.

That visit has come to an end without a signed contract and Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that Cotchery is expected to make a choice between playing for the Panthers and returning to the Steelers. Per Person, the decision could come on Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Cotchery caught a career-high 10 touchdown passes for the Steelers in 2013 and had 46 catches for 602 yards overall. Those numbers were a big uptick from Cotchery’s previous two seasons with the Steelers, who have already lost Emmanuel Sanders to free agency this offseason. Pittsburgh was expected to meet with free agent wide receiver Lance Moore this week.

While it’s not known what will factor into Cotchery’s ultimate choice, it is a good bet that money will play a leading role and it could come down to whether the Panthers or Steelers offer more of it in their search for someone to catch passes in 2014.

If it’s a money thing, the Panthers will have to keep looking for a receiver. Hurney really shot us in the foot on that one. Have fun staying in Pittsburgh Cotchery. Maybe we could try to get Armanti Edwards back… Worked so well last time

He looks forward to working with Derek Anderson during the offseason!

Umh, tough decision … career best year for the team that just lost it’s WR2 vs. GM that fired franchise GOAT and has a cripple QB. What could be the deciding factor?

I don’t know, but I think he’s leaning Black and Gold. Otherwise, you don’t let him leave the Queen City unsigned. Does Gettleman even own a pen?

Panther fans 12-4 was a fluke, expect to go back to the old ways. Steelers are primed to make a playoff run in the weak AFC.

    Big Decision.

    Pick One:

    a) A team with strong defense and an athletic quarterback

    b) An aged, declining, rudderless team

Hey I think the Panthers should get Leon Sandcastle… ah ah ah!

  7. my1voice57 says: Mar 18, 2014 5:11 PM

I guess that Gettleman is so confident in his ability to play Wide Receiver that he’s not worried whether the Panthers have any quality veteran receivers on the team. Panther Nation no need to worry, RIGHT?

The way things look now (after Cam’s surgery and recovery) our franchise QB and every one of our WRs (whoever they may be) will meet face to face for the first time at training camp. That’s going to work out just great – said no one ever.

This old team thing is funny…. If you go by age, they are pretty young.
If you go by the 2011 & 2012 roster, they were getting old.

This is 2014… Young d, and young offense. Troy & Ike are the only elders, and get the job done.

No doubt playing against the weak, weak bengals secondary twice a year will weigh into his decision.

  11. billiamsofdollars says: Mar 18, 2014 6:15 PM

Yes Pittsburgh is getting younger, but they’re also getting worse.

12 and 4 was no fluke buddy , we had the best front 7 in the nfl and we still have the best front 7 and we got rid of our weakness in captin munnerlyn and charles godfrey comes back from his injury keep doubting us

It comes down to this for Cotchery…….be the #1 receiver in Carolina and draw the defense’s best CB or be the #2 guy in Pittsburgh with Antonio Brown drawing the best cornerback and the double team. Last year Cotchery talked about how coming back to Pittsburgh was a no brainer and the best decision of his career. Funny how money may change that 1 year later.

Since when is Jerico Cotchery a big name WR? He was on a street FA that was added on late for Pitt. Good for him, but hes robbing whoever he picks. Nothing more than a slow slot receiver whos skills are diminishing.

One of the most dependable vet slot guys you can look to on 3rd and 5 and can close your eyes knowing hes gonna grab it

McNutt and King are your 2014 starting wideouts for 2014. Gettleman is tanking the 2014 season because of the cap and Cam will be taking a hike after next season unless he is either optioned or franchized. It’s going to be a long season for Panthers fans in 2014.

  17. pftaddict says: Mar 18, 2014 9:43 PM

After finding out that Cam Newton will be out 4 months and Derek Anderson is a backup, the decision seems like a no-brainer, the Steelers!

  18. bengalguy says: Mar 18, 2014 10:08 PM

    Can he play QB?

  19. bengalguy says: Mar 18, 2014 10:10 PM

Problem is Pitzburgh faced alot of 3rd & 10′s…… To which he cant help @ all.
    Old,slow team.

Outside of you I don’t think that anyone has mentioned Cotchery and the term big time WR in the same sentence….ever.

He is a number three or four everywhere except Carolina where he would be the offense lol.

Steelers are treating him as that and waiting it out and not overstepping ala the Raiders or the Jags.

One note….he did catch 10 TDs last year son.

That was 10th best in the league. Not bad for a number 3 son.

Have a cookie and then take a nap.

    Baaaammmm!!!

Hopefully catchery sticks around with the black and gold. They can use his veteran leadership. Keeping him and adding a new big receiver in the draft is exactly what Big Ben and the offense needs to get back in the post season.

  23. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Mar 19, 2014 8:14 AM

One thing about Carolina, he could be the #1 WR. And #2, #3, and #4……..

  24. jgedgar70 says: Mar 19, 2014 8:36 AM

    So here’s the choice:

    A) Play with the young, continuously-improving QB, or,
    B) Play with the decrepit old has-been QB.

Seems like an easy choice to me…

  25. tombstoned says: Mar 20, 2014 6:12 PM

Poor fella, not gonna get a ring in either scenario. At least has a better shot at the playoffs in Carolina.
