Defensive tackle Henry Melton played his college football in the state of Texas. He’ll now be returning to his home state to continue his professional career as well.

Melton tweeted a thank you to the Chicago Bears for the first five years of his career, but said he will continue his career “with a star on my helmet.

We’re taking that to mean the Dallas Cowboys.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports it is a multi-year deal.

Melton played at the University of Texas before joining the Bears for the last five years. He was give the franchise tag by Chicago last year and subsequently tore his ACL after just three games, ending his season. With the Cowboys, Melton will be reunited with former Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

In addition to the Cowboys, Melton drew interest from the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Rams in free agency.

Good luck on that team, Melton. 8-8 is all you will probably see.

Jerry couldn’t help himself could he.

Won’t do much more than patch the holes caused by Hatcher and Ware’s departure, but assuming its a smaller deal it’s a solid signing for the Cowboys. Still need to focus heavily on D-line in the draft just to avoid the defensive embarassment of last year but this is a better way to rebuild than resigning Anthony Spencer to a monster deal, which the Jerruh of old definitely would have done.

Somewhere, Ken Harris is kicking himself…

  6. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Mar 18, 2014 8:47 PM

This signing makes sense. He is familiar with Marinelli’s defense, under 30, and cleared the medical exam for his injury.

Still need to draft another DT and need a DE too. It’s a start.

    Melton > Hatcher

Assuming his knee is healed and his kidney-biting days are behind, this COULD be a great signing for the Cowboys. Anybody who says otherwise is just blinded by pure Cowboys hatred.

    Bears’ fan here.

    Here’s the skinny.

Melton is extremely athletic (former HB), and can be very disruptive. Plus, he’s young and a perfect fit for the 3tech.

HOWEVER, before he went down last year, he was looking very average (maybe not in as good shape at the start?), and no one really knows if the injury cost him his burst, or how he will perform without Peppers (Ware) gobbling up double-teams.

If Jerry didn’t throw the bank at him, then it’s a decent signing. He’s a good not great player.

It’s a great signing, no doubt but look at the Cowboys salary cap situation. They have to backload all their money just to sign guys for this year. They are basically on their 4th credit card.

  11. ketch20too says: Mar 18, 2014 9:08 PM

This will make the logistics easier for his work release program

  12. anicra says: Mar 18, 2014 9:12 PM

Is this going to be a 5 year 50M contract? Would be on par for the Cowboys. Who would believe in 2015 the Cowboys would be paying Romo 27.8M

  13. seatownballers says: Mar 18, 2014 9:15 PM

So glad he didn’t go to a contender

  14. bronx77 says: Mar 18, 2014 9:17 PM

Solid signing. But they need A LOT more if the plan is the playoffs instead of the rebuild they desperately need.

  15. mediasloppy says: Mar 18, 2014 9:18 PM

Looks like Jared Allen ain’t going there now.

  16. bearfan34 says: Mar 18, 2014 9:19 PM

Well, this hurts and helps at the same time. It hurts because Melton is very good at what he does. It helps because it means the Bears can trade back a few spots and still get their Melton replacement DT in the draft since the main team looking for one just signed ours.

  17. sallust99 says: Mar 18, 2014 9:21 PM

  18. dalfanforever says: Mar 18, 2014 9:22 PM

It’s a start. Assuming he’s healthy and Jerrah didn’t sell the farm away, this could work out. For once, he’s acting like a GM.

We still need a DE on the other side and safety help to at least get the D serviceable again. We just got younger and hopefully better on this side. With Marinelli leading the D, I hope to at least to be able to hold a lead once in a while….

  19. jojopuppyfish says: Mar 18, 2014 9:22 PM

As a Bears fan, I was more impressed with Nate Collins than Henry Melton. Thought Melton was hype. Listening to Buffone, he seemed to agree.

  20. dalfanforever says: Mar 18, 2014 9:24 PM

It’s being reported as a 1 year deal, with a club option of 3 more if he performs. A very smart move.

The. “Most mediocre franchise in sports”…

  22. wwrgesusd says: Mar 18, 2014 9:30 PM

Now, if they could just get 3 more starting D linemen, 2 more linebackers another good corner and another good safety they will be set!

  23. dctillidie says: Mar 18, 2014 9:34 PM

Great, so now he’s gonna bite Foles, RG3, and Manning in their kidneys. Guess it’s the only way the Cowboys can avoid last place in the NFC East.

  24. hurricanegrabowski says: Mar 18, 2014 9:45 PM

Good riddance. Have fun with a guy who’s smart enough to be arrested for for assault while he’s supposedly recovering from a torn ACL.

  25. slicklee95 says: Mar 18, 2014 9:52 PM

I do not see why everyone thinks Dallas will miss Hatcher? He’s been around for 7-8 years and had done nothing until his contract year! D Ware will be missed a little but damn he’s not the 2009 D Ware anymore, not even close. Not to mention these young left tackles in the league are getting stronger, faster and more games played. Ware…is just getting older. I do appreciate the memories D Ware!!!

  26. rrthomasxyz says: Mar 18, 2014 9:52 PM

Seahawks dodged a disappointment. Let the Cowboys deal with Melton’s legal troubles and potential bad character issues.

  27. burleyboy says: Mar 18, 2014 9:55 PM

We are going to be better than 8-8

  29. beerbudsnbevo says: Mar 18, 2014 10:08 PM

If Jerry will listen to Marinelli in the draft, Claiborne can play to his potential, Lee and Carter stay healthy for once, Crawford come back from his injury 100 percent, this could be a quick turnaround…

    But that’s a big if…

And for all you peeps hating on Melton, like you all haven’t gotten wasted and bitten some strangers Kidney before…

When a second tier FA doesn’t want to sign with the Vikings, its not a good sign.

But then again, the Vikings aren’t a good team.

  36. jayblack073 says: Mar 18, 2014 10:49 PM

Potentially a great signing, but probably won’t be due to the large amount of cash this deal will most likely carry.

I really wanted to see him in Seattle with all this talent on the D line already. Would have been a stellar replacement if not upgrade for McDonald.

Well played Big D, well played.

  38. aldavis4president says: Mar 18, 2014 10:53 PM

Cowboys need to go DT DE DT DE CB in the draft. Good signing though. He’s a real workhorse.

  39. abqhawk says: Mar 18, 2014 11:27 PM

Obviously a SB ring isn’t important to him cuz he sure isn’t getting on in Dallas.

Seahawksteven, sorry Dallas is more capable of landing a free agent than your Super Bowl team

Melton has entered new territory – have you ever heard of someone ‘Biting a Kidney’? Yup, he’s being sued by a Bar Owner for biting his kidney…..only in Texas!!

Good luck Henry, hope you’re knee’s good.

  44. duck99 says: Mar 19, 2014 8:43 AM

Please stop with the fallacy that Peppers gets double teamed all the time. It’s not true. Shea MCClellin had a better grade from PFF than Peppers in 2013 and the Bears were so impressed they are moving him to LB. It’s amazing that the NFL is so popular and there is only 16 games, yet most fans don’t watch the film.

  45. trollaikman8 says: Mar 19, 2014 12:32 PM

They still need to sign DL with that first pick.
    Maybe the 2nd Rd too.
