Raiders sign Donald Penn

The Raiders may have finally identified their starting left tackle.

Donald Penn, the veteran who has been the starting left tackle in Tampa Bay for the last seven years, is headed to Oakland. Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that the deal got done today, and that the Raiders plan to give Penn the first shot at earning the starting left tackle job.

The Raiders have had a hard time getting the left tackle spot figured out. They allowed their previous starter, Jared Veldheer, to walk away in free agency, and after initially agreeing to terms with Rodger Saffold, the Raiders called that contract off when they said Saffold failed their physical.

Now Penn, who turns 31 next month, is expected to provide some veteran stability to the Raiders’ offensive line. Stability was something Penn provided in Tampa Bay, where he started 108 straight games, and stability is something Oakland desperately needs.

  1. I’ve liked the Raiders off season moves overall, but I don’t think this is a good move. As a bucs fan I watched Donald Penn a lot last year. He has started to decline a lot in pass protection, and always has trouble managing his weight. He has a really hard time with the speedy DE’s. I think he could be a solid guard though , he’s very good in the run game. Just no where close to the pass blocker he used to be.

  2. I think they had already “identified” their LT a week ago. Watson will get the first crack at it. If he fails Penn is his insurance. If he succeeds look for Penn to go to LG or maybe swing tackle.

  3. I wish Reggie would have signed some young core players with 70 million cap space. I don’t think you can say they won’t come to clev when free agents are signing with TB CLEV …. Reggie has done a nice job of adding winners and fill ins but where is the rebuild I don’t see it .Unless Mark Davis gave him 4-6 year time line . This is good model if Mark is that patient just goes against the win now mentality of today’s nfl. I see what Reggie is doing filling the roster with adequate players and good locker room players while he is trying to add through the draft until raiders are more competitive then add better free agents . I just don’t know if he has that much time Raider nation has been through hell the last 12 years. His first two drafts are not that great but last years could pan out if Hayden and Watson can get healthy and get on the field.i love s Moore and the Stacy McGee he looks like he could be a good DT with time . still Houston only receives guarenteed money so he could have been signed if he didn’t pan out And he could have been released in 2-3 years if it wasn’t working out . I think he would have been perfect a DT with some good pass rushing DE to take pressure off him. It is hard to judge d Allen with constant turn over and no stability al Davis was bashed for no front office stability now we have flipped the script ..I love the raiders just after 12 years I’m ready for a winner and if Oakland can’t give Oakland a stadium NOW time to move this is holding the franchise back really a 50 year old stadium unheard of in today’s sports world. Reggie needs to have the best draft of his life this May go RAIDERS…..

  4. Ooooooh buddy! The Raiders are going to be competitive next year. There are a lot of returning players and our o line is already better than last year’s. Donald Penn, Mike Briesel, Steven Wisnewski, Kevin Boothe and Manelik Watson…

With Tony Bergstrom and Kalif Barnes as reserves.

Not bad, not bad at all.

And we’re not even half way done yet.

  5. If he is a “stop gap” or on the decline.

hopefully the raiders go him on the cheap.

I’ts gotta be better then whatever they have last year.

In the toughest stadium for a LT to play in against the eventual Champions.

PENN was the LT for a Rookie QB in a game At Seattle week 9 where the Bucs had a 21 pt lead and lost on an OT field goal.

Cliff Avril who was going against PENN only managed 0.5 sacks.

Bennet had 1.5 but not against PENN

and there was a “coverage” sack in OT by DB wagner again…not PENN’s guy.

So to give up a 1/2 sack on the Road against Seattle the most dominating Defense in the league.

    Not to bad.

Plus PENN caught a TD pass on NIGHT game against Miami. (we can use all the TD receptions we can get LOL)

Good Signing. (provided the not too much was paid and sticking around 2 yrs.)

It’s true that the Raiders are getting older…but all the young guys have SUCKED in recent years.

These guys around 30 for 2 yr deals are going to PLAY THEIR ASSES OFF to hopefully cash in on one more deal before they are done.

    Draft Watkins!

Sign a QB once they are cut (Vick, Sanchito, or Schaub) And let’s ROLL!

  6. They still should draft Jake Matthews with the 5 th pick in thr draft. The Raiders are the 2014 version of the over the hill gang. All they need now is to sign Brett Favre to play QB. They better go after Jared Allen and bolster the pass rush even more . They still have no QB and going after Matt Schaub and Mark Samchez is a waste of time . Better to draft AJ McCarron in the 2nd round and sign Josh Freeman.

  7. Now if we can just get Alex Mack then we’ll be set. That would be a line to reckon with.

  8. Veldheer is better. So is Anthony Collins, which is why the Bucs signed him and released Penn. I thank him for 108 games of laying his heart out on the field, but watching him last year was painful.

  9. What young guys did you want him to create this great young core of starters? Just sign young scrubs and dream that they get it when they put the Raider uniform on? Some people are delusional. This is just a depth move in case Watson struggles. There were no young guys available once Orakpo and Hardy were tagged, ok we missed out on the Giants DT wow 1 guy. Relax we are borrowing players with a year or two left creating a vet leadership. We will draft guys that can start. And RMs picks will pay off this year.

  10. Generally a team adds youth through the draft and the Raiders have 7 picks in one of “deepest” drafts noted by various experts.

Have to look at McKenzie’s background with the Packers and how to build a team through the draft.

  11. This move gives us more options come draft day which means we can trade down for more picks ..I only want to stay at 5 if Clowney or Watkins or K.Mack is there..if there not there then trade down for more picks this draft is loaded with WRs and DBs

  12. Portland? LA? Anything but that stench hole in Oakland. They can’t hang with Niners. FM radio ….lowest revenue in NFL. Get out of dodge Mr Davis aka dumb and dumber

  13. It shows how delusional Raider Nation is when they act like the team just hit a home run when signing an old, lower-tier tackle.

All they’ve done is signed a bunch of old, adequate, players who are past their primes.

  14. Penn is a beast and can still handle the best edge rushers in the nfl. Tampa should have kept him, he still has 4-or-5 good years left, and who cares if he had an issue with his weight he still played great. His 2013 year wasn’t up to his standards but he still played better than most NFL left tackles. I say he makes it to the probowl for Oakland in 2014.

  15. I’ve been critical of Reggie, but he gets some kudos for playing chicken with Penn and winning. Penn left without signing a few days ago and went to Washington. Now we see that he has signed for the Raiders.

Conclusion: Reggie played hardball on the contract and got him for significantly less money that Penn wanted.

My guess: This is a two year deal low on guaranteed money (or at least a lot lower than the big contract he had in Tampa Bay) and Tony Sparano thinks that Menelik Watson might win the job in camp.

  16. Doesnt say much for the Tackle they drafted in the second round last year, when you go out into FA and overspend on 2 OT’s.

Wait until they bring DeMarcus back.
    ———————————–

Gotta love those who talk trash but either dont know what they’re talking about, cant spell or both….lol

Hmm, I just cant recall DeMarcus Ware ever playing for the Raiders…. But sure, bring him to Oakland!

  18. all this bs about age….when it’s all done and said Raiders will like every other nfl team with an avg age of 26 .(point) something…age does not mean much…it’s all about the individual, and his conditioning, and wear and tear.

Bottom line a lot of young guys get paid , and get lazy, while olders guys work harder to keep their job. It’s also called leadership. I like the off season thus far…..DT in the second rd.
