Report: Jets privately apologize for negotiating tactics

AP

When the Chiefs chose to complain about the failure of agent Steve Weinberg to follow through on a verbal deal for receiver Emmanuel Sanders, several league insiders — both from the team side and the agent side — pointed out that NFL teams routinely engage in shady business dealings, too.

The Jets apparently could be on that list, in one specific way.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have apologized to at least one agent after the team misled the agent regarding the team’s interest in a player during the three-day exclusive negotiating window.

Multiple agents told Mehta the Jets engaged in “questionable practices” by leading them to believe the team’s interest was at a level that the eventual offers apparently didn’t match.

That specific accusation comes in an article that focuses primarily on the frustrations arising within the organization regarding the slow pace of G.M. John Idzik in free-agency negotiations.  An unnamed member of the organization said that Idzik “operates on his own time and schedule,” and that the situation is “unbelievable.”

As to the latest player the Jets failed to sign, Mehta reports that the Jets made a “desperate 11th-hour offer” for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but that it was too late to keep him away from the Giants.

That said, the Jets closed the deal with receiver Eric Decker during his first and only free-agency visit.  So Idzik hasn’t been slow on every possible candidate.

Looking at the situation more broadly, the leaks suggest a level of dysfunction that either didn’t previously exist or that had been successfully concealed under Idzik’s leadership.  That could make for another mess of a season, if the Jets get off to a slow start in 2014.

  1. The Jets involved in “questionable practices??” Are they still taping the Patriots and then turning them in for doing the same thing back to them?

  2. As much as this shouldn’t come as surprising that teams lie during negotiations, it kind of did.

If these teams and agents would stop playing games and manipulating others, we’d probably all benefit.

  3. I don’t get the Jets or their GM. With all of the money they had, and still have, to spend, how in the world did they not snag a top CB?

Why was Idzek wasting his time watching Bridgewater when he should have been in NJ trying his best to sign DRC?

  4. .
The Jets arguably have the worst roster in the NFL. With the exception of center, I can’t think of a position where they have above average talent.

    .

  5. the jets will be fine have basically the same team as last year with the addition of eric decker idzik wants to build this team through the draft and hopefully it works cause i want a superbowl BAD

  6. Ryan and the QB will make for another mess of a season. They don’t need Idzik’s help.

Here’s to hoping they keep The Sanchize.

  7. Wait, you mean GM’s might have different priorities with each free agent they are negotiating with, moving quickly with some while going slowly with others? Weird, right?

  8. I think it’s mostly all those times Rex Ryan follows agents into the bathroom and keeps talking to them while they’re standing at the urnial.

  9. Are you trying to say a JETS official is slow of foot? Dont let Sexy Rexy know that good lord…

  10. MANISH FTW! He always makes me laugh. Unnamed memebers within the organization! Multiple agents! Journalistic integrity like you learn about.

  11. Hard to know who to believe here. I mean, it’s perfectly plausible that Idzik is just incompetent, given the Jets’ recently history. On the other hand, keeping agents dangling and slowing down the whole process could be a really useful tactic in manipulating the free agent market.

  12. Shocker, Manish and Mike team up to hack Idzik. You don’t win Super Bowls in March (ask logical voice). I like that he isn’t overpaying a loser tax (looking at you Oakland) for other teams scraps, or blowing all of his cap space on garbage. There is a long off season, and he is showing patience and discipline; two things I personally like in a GM. He is building depth and seeking role players. If a big name gets cut in the next few weeks he will have the ammo to make an offer. In Idzik we trust.

  13. The Jets continue to aspire to be like the model franchise of the Pats. These guys don’t have the genius that is Bill Belichick to rely on and guide the team to victories year after year.

  14. Mannish is just an idiot. I don’t see people complaining when the packers,49ers,& steelers are slow in free agency. Oh btw those teams are on dynasty month ion nfl network while teams like the browns and dolphins aren’t but yet they spend like drunken sailors. Unreal

  15. An unnamed member of the organization said that Idzik “operates on his own time and schedule,” and that the situation is “unbelievable.”
    ********************
Dave Gettleman of Carolina said, “what’s wrong with that?” The first game isn’t until September, anything can happen. “Last man out, turn off the lights.”

  16. This is why you don’t hire salary cap accountants to be the General Manager. Its still a talent evaluation job at its core.

  17. Idzik is an enigma. Last offseason he looked sharp. then he reached for Geno, setting back Jets’ rebuilding for another cycle.
It will be interesting to see where these complaints go. Is Itzik stumbling, or are the NY media pushing Rex’s prepackaged beefs? Remember those monkeys loved him, then piled on after his highly entertaining news conference. Maybe they’ve decided to show him some foot as a peace offering.

  19. Hmm, I wouldn’t give what agents say a second thought.

But the “leaker” is another story.
Obviously one of Rex’s guys, I’m guessing its DC, Dennis Thurman.

  20. Seriously, with all the outright cheating and questionable tactics this organization does, why havent they been more sucessful? They sure are lucky espn is “Jet – territory.” they have gotten away with murder the last 15 years. Whether it be taping other teams signals, tampering, interfering with opposing players during games etc etc….

  21. So Jet fans, how does it feel to know that the team you root for is pretty much the laughing stock of the NFL?

  22. Even if you don’t like the giants signings, when we want the guy, Reese gets him!
The Jets had DRC up 1st? Now back with Antrel Rolle to ‘watch him” DRC becomes a better and better signing.
Add Thurmond; Demps; Holliday; Rolle, DRC, Hill, McBribe, and Hosely, giants look as solid as they could get in there secondary,
    Jets have still about 20M?
    CT GIANT

  23. If you’re going to get schooled by your Big Brother (the NY Giants), at least learn from it and how to do business the right way.

  24. Jets fans: WE WANT SAPP

“With the 9th pick of the 1995 NFL draft, the New York Jets select Kyle Brady, TE, Penn State”

    Jets fans: *facepalm*

    LMAO

  25. J-O-K-E! Joke! Joke! Joke!

Has anyone asked Rex about, or seen, his Sancheese love tattoo lately?

Seriously though, the Jets are looking like they could be the legitimate bottom-dwellers of the AFC East next season.

  26. Not for nothing, but Manesh was complaining about Tannenbaum spending recklessly, and now its Idzik, not spending fast enough.

Maybe the Jets ought make every writer’s dream come true, and just hire Manesh to be the GM….

  27. I thought the Dolphins were the only dysfunctional franchise in the NFL? I think if other teams were exposed the way the Dolphins were – the truth would known.

  28. Way I see it, Jets have actually done pretty well in playing the FA market. Not overpaying for average talent, retaining their own players on the cheap, filled some major holes. Seems the media has been chasing it’s tail trying to place every FA under the sun as their priority since FA started. All we ever hear baout is the Jets are interested in player X. Didn’t seem to be reality though. Love Rex, hope he wins a SB with the Jets. Would be nice to see one of our own do well after leaving Baltimore. Jets are in a no win situation with their own media though.

  29. That’s the biggest news of the century. Keep on talking about the spygate and how you never did such a thing on your side…!

My opinion is that Idzik has no interest in putting a winning season on the field this year. He wants to set the team up for 2015. After they bomb this year, he will then fire Rex Ryan (who he inherited and doesnt want) and then he will go and get a new coach next year, and have the salary cap/roster perfectly set up to do exactly what the Bucs have been doing for the last week. For Idzik, it is a brilliant strategy, for Ryan and the Jets fans, it is a wasted year

  31. Just more examples of GMs trying to prove to themselves how smart they are………only to realize they ain’t…….if you want a player then sign him.

  32. Okay? maybe they were after James Jones and learned something about Eric Decker we didn’t know about.

Building through the draft is the way to go. Plug a few holes during the FA period and add talent in the draft, Jets fans and other fans commenting on these articles about the lack of aggression from Idzik look stupid. If John Idzik were aggressive this year there would be a lot of overpaid, free agent busts. This years free agency class was pretty lackluster. Eric Decker even has his own question marks, Hakeem Nicks may be injury prone or lazy, James Jones can’t separate well and benefited from Rodgers accuracy on passes and Emmanuel Sanders seems like a Diva speedster with no hands. And about the cornerbacks, Verner was not a scheme fit for Rex, Vontae Davis isn’t one of the best in the league and got a bit overpaid, Cortland finnegan is declining and DRC has question marks about his integrity and motivation to play the game on top of having only one great year.

If we were to overspend, be aggressive whatever you want to call it we would end up like the dolphins or the “dream team” eagles and be right back to where we were after the 2010-2011 season so enough with these articles these holes are not easily fixable and nobody before this year thought so either so lets move on.

  33. But it’s okay for Agents to lead teams to believe that there’s more interest in a player than there really is so the contract might be for larger numbers? Hmmmm. Seems to me it’s a two-way street here.

  34. Last year, the same idiots ragging on the Jets now were saying that they would be the worst team in the NFL with no more than 2-3 wins instead of going 8-8 like they did. *gasp* a GM who doesn’t want to overpay for players? We must be doomed.

  35. Mehta is probably full of it, but even if he isn’t I’m honestly not surprised. Woody and his crew like to make a splash whenever possible, and Idzik is more about getting value free agents and building through the draft. As long as they let him do what he wants, I have faith that he’ll build the Jets into a contender within the next 2-3 years. Patience is just not a virtue within the Jets organization historically, so it’s understandable if Idzik is taking some time to change the culture.

I don’t think he’s trying to throw this year out the window though. 9-7 probably makes the playoffs and this team is already better than last year’s team offensively. Richardson, Wilkerson, Harrison, and Coples will carry the defense and make the back end look better than it is, and we still may find a competent starter or two in late free agency or the draft. There’s also cuts coming where guys who can ball get axed for cap reasons and the like. Just be patient Jets fans!

  36. The joke is that this team finished 8-8 with a rookie QB, no receivers, a lame duck head coach, no RB’s for 8 games and no Revis the Exaulted One.

Love what Idzik and Rex are doing, the ship has been righted. Love that the joke Jets beat the Patriots and should have swept them. Love that the Fish owned last year free agency and went into a tailspin of biblical proportions.

Love that Giant fans who have nothing going for them and I mean nothing including the Human Pick Eli, troll on Jet boards these days!!!!!!

  37. The Jets should apologize to their former mascot “Fireman Ed”. It’s pretty bad when your own “self acclaimed #1 super fan”and mascot is so embarrassed by your team that he quits before (halftime) mind you. You can now see him up in Foxborough working every home game as “Pat Patriot”

  38. Just curious, but are we talking about the same Idzik that drafted the Defensive Rookie of the Year last year?

I get that the Jets have had some historically bad drafts, but last year was not one of them….

  39. All NY media is a joke. They all fawn over the Giants and love to portray the Jets as the worst organization in the world just because of two years of the Jets being better.

  40. Going from a GM who signed average talent to ridiculously high contracts to a GM who won’t correct gaping holes in the roster shows that the faces may be different, but the dysfunction remains.

    Same ol’ Jets.

  41. Manish is a “shill” for those who dislike the Jets which includes him — if you follow all the Jet beat writers, he consistenly looks for the negative!

  42. How come the Jets always have to be the most dysfunctional team in the offseason? That team needs to clean house in the front office and get rid of these anonymous leaks. They do nothing but make this franchise look ridiculous. Other teams have front office dysfunction also but they’re respectful enough of their leadership to keep it to themselves. There always has to be someone at the Jets that leaks all their problems no matter how small they may be.

  43. What Manish doesn’t seem to understand is just because you get a click doesn’t make it a good article. If someone rolls their eyes, says “This BS again?” and closes the page, what was accomplished? No ads were clicked and 0 dollars made.

The guy really hasn’t written a decent article in years, and everything is attributed to “unnamed sources”. Well, my unnamed source is telling me Manish’s unnamed source is Manish himself.

  44. Although I have no dog in this particular fight, I do find it funny that a denver fan would tell jet’s fans that their front office has to be cleaned up. Half the bronco’s front office was arrested last year for drunk driving and other infractions that I never saw any punishment(s) for, and they were absolutely hammered in the sb by a buzzsaw of a Seattle team that they were 100% unprepared for.

  45. What I don’t understand is why the GM wouldn’t want the coaches input on players. The coach knows more about a players talent then the GM does. Should be the coaches job to want the player, and the GM’s job to make sure it happens. And this whole thing about the GM didnt hire him non-sense…. what are we in the stone ages? Can’t two people work together and actually get along without the one hiring the other? Yes, Rex had a lot of bravado when he first came to NY, but that seems to pretty much gone away now. Which I for one is sad to see, I hope Rex does an amazing job this year. He’s one hell of a coach.

  46. “Multiple agents told Mehta the Jets engaged in ‘questionable practices’ by leading them to believe the team’s interest was at a level that the eventual offers apparently didn’t match.”

There is not much room for misinterpretation in that statement. If it is true, the Jets will miss out on anyone who is being sought by multiple teams.
Eric Decker and Breno Giacomini were not being hotly pursued by multiple teams and their old teams did not make a play to keep them which raises red flags.

Hard to decipher Idzik’s game plan and Rex does not seem to be be onboard or in the loop. Idzik let a talented young offensive lineman walk in Howard and signed two aging veterans in Pace and Folk, but he did cut Cromatie and Holmes.

  47. Can’t wait until Jets make deep run in the playoffs this year,Oh no!!!! We didn’t overpay for an overated Cornerback!!!what will we do without Dominque Rodgers Cromartie

  48. Just another Manish shiiteh story. it means it’s fake/fabricated. love how he says it’s dysfunctional.

It’s the GM’s job to work FA and yes on his schedule if people don’t like it tough.

And why would it be questionable to send out feelers to players? that’s not questionable.

again another shiiteh article, place in the trash bin

  49. In what world is DRC a top corner, Austin Howard a good RT and a Manish Mehta article remotely believable?

The Jets let a few guys they could really use slip away but it’s still March.
