As expected, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent ankle surgery on Wednesday. Per a league source, the procedure began at 3:00 p.m. ET and is expected to end any minute now.

Newton is expected to miss four months while he recovers from the procedure.

A lingering question relates to the timing of Newton’s injury and his ability to play in the Pro Bowl. If, as the team announced, the injury happened in the postseason game against the 49ers, how was he able to play in Hawaii two weeks later?

That’s what we’re trying to find out.
