The Falcons are keeping their No. 1 pick from the 2009 draft.

The club has re-signed defensive lineman Peria Jerry, the NFL disclosed in its transactions on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Jerry has started 29 regular season games in five NFL seasons. He set career-highs in tackles (33) and sacks (3.5) in 2013 for Atlanta.

The Falcons are expected to employ more 3-4 looks this season. A defensive tackle in a 4-3 front, Jerry (6-2, 295) might have the skill set necessary to occupy blockers as a 3-4 end.

  1. Peria Jerry had 3.5 sacks as the starting DT last year which is nothing to sneeze at. There were problems stopping the run but at age 29 may give some good seasons at DE in 3-4 sets. Nice low risk low pay camp body.

  2. Very surprising, but the Falcons clearly feel he’ll be reasonably effective in some of new new 3-4 alignments; plus they already know him and feel he’s an honest workman, even though (due to injuries) he’ll never quite justify his draft position. You can probably make a case that he’s been at least as effective as recent FA signee Tyson Jackson, another solid player who will always be considered disappointing due his his high draft position.

But most of all, these guys get hurt a lot; and depth at a reasonable price is important.
