Lions sign fullback Jed Collins

In another sign of the changes they’re making on offense, the Lions have added a fullback.

Jed Collins, who spent the last three seasons in New Orleans, has signed in Detroit today. Collins may know the offense better than any of his new teammates, as the Lions’ new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was previously the Saints’ quarterbacks coach.

The Lions previously didn’t have any fullbacks on the roster, but now they’ll have Collins as a lead blocker for the running back combination of Reggie Bush and Joique Bell.

Collins rarely got his hands on the ball in New Orleans, but he was occasionally effective as a receiver out of the backfield. His primary job will be to block, and if he does that well, Bush and Bell will benefit.

What role is Montell Owens slated for?

Always room for a thumper who can erase a LB. I hated our offense under Linehan.

The balance of power has just shifted in the NFC north. Doink. Just hope he whips his hair into some “Jedlocks” for some added pizazz….

Yeah well considering Saints offense will now be mostly Brees to Graham ….. can’t blame him for leaving.

The Lions poach the Saints backfield, Joique Bell, Reggie Bush, now Jedediah Collins. Those were all once OURS! This is unbelievable! I declare grievance!

The Detroit Lions backfield is totally made up of former New Orleans Saints; Reggie Bush, Bell, and Jed Collins.

Detroit’s strategy is not just to use the Saints offense; they are going to use the Saints players as well!

A: it wasn’t his choice to leave, the Saints declined to tender him.

And B: if you think our offense is mostly Brees to Graham, you’re mistaken. Brees, Graham (in addition to serviceable Ben Watson, and high ceiling Josh Hill at TE), Colston, Stills, Morgan, Pierre Thomas, Ingram, and Khiry Robinson.

Not to mention we just signed the lead blocker that paved the way for Doug Martin among others in the Bucs backfield to shine. The Saints have had no problems remaining a top 5 offense for how many years now? It’s obvious Payton is adjusting to a more run oriented offense.

Good luck Jed. You were a good fullback in NOLA.
I disagree with the poster saying that the saints offense will only be Brees and Graham. I think that it’s just the opposite. I foresee the Saints going to more of a run heavy philosophy as they prepare for life after Brees.

Looks like someone just wanted to run over the hapless turd bay defense twice a year.

Best of luck Jed! Saint decided to go with a bit of a more versatile FB. But Jed is a great FB and will do well opening holes for Detroit RBs.

Now all Caldwell needs to complete his Super Bowl 44 roster is lance Moore and Drew Brees. I know Sean Payton out coached this loser but, come on man, let it go!
Psst… Caldwell, Garrett Hartley(4 Super Bowl field goals) against Caldwell’s Colts, is still available! Will Smith, Vilms? Are they next.

  24. eaglesnoles05 says: Mar 19, 2014 2:03 PM

“just the opposite” of only Brees to Graham is Brees doesn’t throw one pass to Graham all year. You think that, ilovefoosball?
