Michael Sam posts better 40 times at Missouri pro day

As impressive as Missouri defensive end Michael Sam was in interviews at the Scouting Combine, it didn’t go so well for him on the field.

But he apparently recovered today at Missouri’s pro day.

According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, two stopwatches had Sam run his first 40-yard dash in 4.69 and 4.70 seconds.

That’s an improvement over the 4.79 and 4.84 he put up at the Combine, and could help boost his stock in the eyes of skeptical evaluators.

According to other reports from Missouri, Sam appeared to have come up with a hamstring pull, which kept him from making a second attempt at the 40-yard dash.

The time he posted Thursday seems more in line with his production at Missouri, after an 11.5-sack senior season which saw him win SEC co-defensive player of the year. More attention has been paid to the fact he’ll be the first openly gay player in the NFL upon being drafted.

  1. The NFL is about finding players that can help teams win games & unfortunately the story on this kid should have never been that he’s gay. Personally I couldn’t care less what he does off the field & either should anyone else for that matter.

The real story with Michael Sam is that he overachieved as a Senior. Although he’s a high energy, effort player–he’s a below average athlete/talent for the NFL. He had a very good season in Missouri but he doesn’t have the speed or quickness to succeed at the next level as a pass rusher. Since he doesn’t have the ability to cover people down the field–I don’t think he’ll even be drafted.

  2. Wow Michael Sam is great. He is the most wonderful football player ever. Isn’t he so amazing and brave and everything we all should be. He is A-Okay! Everything about him is great!! Super swell guy!

  3. He is at least a backup pass rusher. Backup pass rushers are somewhat valuable. About 5th round I surmise. If he does not get drafted, I assume other factors will enter the equation.

  4. Are you going to post the workout times of every 4th round draft pick? If not why did you decide to post Sam’s? Shouldn’t everyone be treated equally?

  5. @ghost26 do you know how many kids come of college that are NFL ready? Numbers won’t blow your mind.

To say that he doesn’t possess the skills to compete at the next level is a bit premature. His time at Missouri, just like any other college athlete, is his stellar resume that’s going to get him the job.

On-the-job professional development at the next level will get him to where he will need to be.

You don’t think he will be drafted? That’s a bit much. I’d believe Mayock a little more.

  6. He’ll get drafted 5th or 6th round, guaranteed.

Needs to get a bit more weight to be a defensive end, but could play outside linebacker if he’s fast enough.

    Haters gonna hate.

  7. If I read this right, he finally ran fast enough to matter but hurt himself doing so. Isn’t that a bad thing?

If my team drafts him I will no longer be a fan.

Cool story, bro! J/K, no one cares what you think.

  9. Forget Sam…I heard Ealy was under 4.6 unofficially on a couple of stopwatches….That’s huge for a guy already in discussion as a mid first rounder.

  10. –relevant because his participation well be historic–not particularly difficult to understand– always funny to see how entitled and obtuse we can be

  11. I don’t get it, the man specifically stated at the Combine that he just wants to be seen as a football player….so why do you guys in the media insist on referring to him as a gay football player every-time you write an article about him?

Uh, perhaps because that is the thing PRIOR to the draft he wanted everyone to know about so he announced it???????

(3rd repost as pft doesn’t like truth)
