Jets cut Mark Sanchez

New York Jets v New England Patriots Getty Images

The Mark Sanchez era is over.

Sanchez, the quarterback who went to the Jets with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and has been a polarizing player since, has been released. The Jets officially announced the long-awaited move on Friday afternoon.

At his best, Sanchez showed promise as a player who could develop into a franchise quarterback who would lead the team for years to come. But he had significant flaws as a passer, flaws which were often overlooked in his first two seasons, when the Jets rode a strong defense to the AFC Championship Game.

Later on, when the Jets’ defense didn’t play quite as well, it became more apparent that Sanchez simply didn’t have what it took to lead a team to a winning record. The Jets’ baffling decision to give Sanchez a contract extension in 2012 was followed a year later by the decision to draft Geno Smith in 2013, which sealed Sanchez’s fate.

Now Sanchez becomes an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. Someone will surely pick Sanchez up and let him compete for a roster spot, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be a starter in 2014. Sanchez has a lot of work to do to turn his career around, and if he ever does it, it won’t be as a Jet.

Don’t forget he was the starting QB when the jets went to back to back AFC Championship games. But we all know defense wins ball games.

So it’s official. Everyone involved in the infamous buttfumble is out of work. First Steve Gregory (the scoop and scorer), Brandon Moore (the butt in buttfumble), and finally Mark Sanchez (the fumble in buttfumble).

  13. patssox says: Mar 21, 2014 6:34 PM

I hate the J-E-T-S Joke Joke Joke, but Sanchez does have some skills that can be developed. But he’s also very immature so that’s a problem.

Same story with Colin Kaepernick in the title in a few years. Kaepernick is riding a strong D to a massive pay day. Weak D amd Kaepernick will be looked at as having flaws in his game. He has them already, but everyone who loves the player thinks he is the reason the Niners are winning.

  63. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 21, 2014 6:49 PM

I told everybody that one day Stafford and Sanchez could be on the same team. Just didn’t know which one. That draft could be like a 2 for 1 deal in hindsight. Now that’s funny!

  64. stoolerz says: Mar 21, 2014 6:50 PM

Still remember when Mangini traded the Browns down in the draft with the Jets so they could draft him. They just laughed and laughed at the Browns and thanked them for making them a contender. Guess we know who gets the last one.

  65. edawg7l says: Mar 21, 2014 6:51 PM

Why are Jets fans so excited about getting Vick? Vick cannot finish a whole season (because he is a running QB) and he makes horrible decisions. The Jets found a guy who will the turn the ball over more than Sanchez – I didn’t know that was possible.

  66. realitypolice says: Mar 21, 2014 6:51 PM

Every decision with this guy has been baffling.

The extension, trading for Tebow, and now prolonging the inevitable and waiting to release him until just about every other team looking for a QB had picked someone up.

So ends one of the strangest Team/QB relationships I’ve ever seen.

  67. turfczar57 says: Mar 21, 2014 6:53 PM

    -NY Jets

  68. pftisfulloftrolls says: Mar 21, 2014 6:54 PM

There goes the NFL’s funniest QB ever.

But on a serious note he can probably serve as a back-up somewhere.

  69. dirtdawg54 says: Mar 21, 2014 6:55 PM

He had 14 games with a QB rating of 100+ (including playoffs). He also had 12 games with a rating of below 50. Yeah, at “his best” he could do neat things but anyone at their best could say that. The fact is, him being at his average meant he was far below the standards for QB play in the modern NFL.

  70. surfinbird1 says: Mar 21, 2014 6:58 PM

Not a fan of Mark S. but this guy didn’t have a prayer of making it with the Jets. Who was his mentor there? Rex, a decent veteran qb or coach, fist pump, Shanana, who? They should be ashamed of how they brought the kid along and will most likely do the same to Geno if they don’t change the way they do things.

REMEMBER HE IS MEXICAN JUST LIKE PLUNKETT AND FLORES 2 GREAT RAIDER QB’S AND HE COULD RIDE THE PINES LIKE PLUNKETT DID AND RE START HIS CAREER WITH 2 MEXICAN MENTORS THAT WERE RAIDER LEGENDS. I THINK TOM FLORES COULD DO WONDERS FOR SANCHEZ IF SANCHEZ WERE WILLING AND PATIENT ENOUGH TO LISTEN TO FLORES AND PLUNKETT . SANCHEZ IS NOT A NYC GUY. HE’S A MEXI CALI GUY . IF HE PLAYED FOR THE RAIDERS HE WOULD HAVE TO LOSE THE HEAD BAND 100% FOR SURE AND ACT MACHO . IN 2 YEARS HE COULD BE A BIG SURPRISE WHEN THE RAIDERS MOVE BACK TO LA .

That’s of course on top of his back to back “guarantees” that Sanchez would lead them to a Championship

Is it any wonder this guy has no credibility with his players?

If any team is smart they will sign Sanchez as he has a TON of good intel to share

Specifically on how NOT to run a football team –

i.e. DON’T let your coach guarantee a young QB with confidence issues will win the Super Bowl

And when that doesn’t work DON’T let that idiot coach do the same thing again the next year

And then when they fail to win, DON’T give your QB the kiss of death as a coach by GUARANTEEING that he’ll be your QB as long as you are head coach

Yes, if anyone signs Sanchez and does the opposite of what he learned in New Jersey, they’ll go far

  103. glennh03 says: Mar 21, 2014 8:41 PM

The surprise here is that Rex has a job.

With a few exceptions (Luck, Wilson) any college QB needs patience, leadership and a team committed to his development. Jets did none/had none of the above – they saw him as their savior and expected him to do things he couldn’t/wasn’t equipped to do. Most college QBs need two years under an established starter – there are exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions.

The Jets ruined Sanchez, destroyed his confidence and blamed him for their monumental f&*^%-ups.

He was never going to be Brady or Manning but in a world where teams trade for Schaub, sign Fitzpatrick to 2-year deals and Ponder competes for a starting job he was capable of being an average QB. The competition level to be an average QB in the NFL these days isn’t that high. Sanchez was mis-handled and then blamed when it all went wrong in the circus that is Rex’s Jets.

Vick is a desperation measure – there was no-one else to start as clearly Sanchez was gone – there was no trust left after the debacle of last pre-season. The relationship was simply untenable.

The surprise is that teflon Rex is still around – seriously, what does he have to do to get fired?
Rex is simply not head coach material – offensive or defensive coordinator – yes, but head coach no. The joke the Jets have become is proof enough – he’s the sales guy who consistently promises more than he knows the organization can deliver and then blames everyone else. His players love him, but as head coach they should respect him, not think of him as their buddy. Players don’t love Belichick, Carroll or Harbaugh – they respect them.

After this year the Jets need to clean house – Rex and Idzik need to be gone. Rex for not being good enough, Idzik for keeping Rex and not seeing through the BS. He had the chance to fire him and instead doubled-down. Good franchises have stability and sensible, strategic heads – not knee jerk reactions, stupid tattoos and publicity seeking thrill seekers. Rex is out of his depth as a head coach and Idzik didn’t realize that until too late.

  104. u4iadman says: Mar 21, 2014 8:43 PM

Extending the contract in 2012 when they did not have to was moronic. All should have been fired.
Drafting Geno…well too early, but not good so far.
Crapshoot with any of the QB’s except Luck who was considered sure thing and once in a decade, and he is.

He fared a lot better than the majority of previous Jets QBs. His one losing season was the year that the FO dumped all of their starters and Revis was hurt. They gutted the team that went to the title game twice, then laid it on Sanchez when the team sucked. Same fans that labeled him Sanchise now say he stinks lol…then they draft Geno Smith, passing on guys like Kiko Alonso and Eddie Lacy. Now they’ve signed Mike Vick aka Geno Smith 1.0, who will probably be their starter. Seriously doubt that they spent all that coin on Decker to have Geno run to the sidelines every down lol.

That was bush league waiting this long to release him. They should’ve released him at the start of free agency.
