Ravens bring in safety Darian Stewart

The Ravens might continue to monitor safety James Ihedigbo’s situation, but they’re signing around him anyway.

The team announced Friday they had agreed to a one-year deal with Rams free agent Darian Stewart, and that he’d be in Baltimore Sunday for a physical.

Stewart started six games for the Rams last year, but 13 in 2011, when he was playing for current Ravens secondary coach Steve Spagnuolo.

With him behind Matt Elam, they might be covered at strong safety, which could leave Ihedigbo on the outside looking in, as they try to find more of a true free safety to pair with last year’s first-rounder.

Depending on the contract, he could be an effective backup/special teams player. Clearly not the answer for a “rangy free safety”.

  3. crownofthehelmet says: Mar 21, 2014 3:44 PM

That’s a great plan, have Spags bring in the back-up Rams’ players. I’m sure he’ll be starting Wk 1, while Elam is cashiering at payless shoes.

This is what bad teams do! sign bad players. steelers sign Mitchell a top notch safety and the ratbirds sign this clown..#ozzieistheworst

Never heard of him. Is this guy any good?

Overall the Rams’ secondary was awful last year, but this guy was OK.

So this is their answer? This is what gets them to 9 wins? LOL!

Steelers are on the rise. 7 rings.

Obviously a Special Teams Value signing & a backup Strong Safety. Every team needs these kind of guys.

  10. krabballs says: Mar 21, 2014 4:12 PM

He will be better with the Ravens than he was with the Rams. This is what good teams do.

All the Ravens laughing at the Steelers signings, I have 1 thing to say:

    HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA!

ravens have got an ‘A’ for free agent signings.pittsburgh a ‘D’ there are broke and old. should get early 1 st round pick next year.

I will admit I never heard of this guy. but if Ozzie wants him I’m sure he will be a good player. that’s what Ozzie does

  14. drsummeroff says: Mar 21, 2014 4:46 PM

Moderately talented guy who was ALWAYS hurt. This is probably a good place for him to land where he’ll be backing up the starter.

  15. poesports says: Mar 21, 2014 4:48 PM

I still remember a couple years ago when Ozzie signed Jacoby Jones and a lot of critics and cynics laughed and made fun back then. Now people say he should have been the SB MVP. Until they play the games, nobody knows. Ozzie gets some wrong as well but he does have a decent track record. I love Steelers fans chiming in as usual. Perhaps you should worry about your own team going 8 – 8 3 years in a row.

Darian Stewart is a very interesting case:
At the combine he ran 4.53 and jumped 37 inches.
Ha Ha Dix ran 4.58 and jumped 33.
    Matt Elam 4.54 + 35.5

    More interesting:
In Spagnuolos’ last season coaching the Rams Darian started 13 games and had 84 tackles, 3 sacks 2 FF and an INT & was viewed as a young NFL starter on the rise. Than Spags was fired and thou Stewart was one of the few bright spots on the Ram Defense he was seen by the new staff as merely a valued reserve and special teamer.

Stewart is sure to be the great under the radar signing for the Ravens this offseason.

  19. jtbsteeler says: Mar 21, 2014 5:38 PM

Who? – 100% of Ravens fans.

    Lol

We draft ahead of you and will have more higher round comp picks. Stop whining about Tomlin. The Ravens Oline is in deep trouble and their fans know it.

The Steelers can draft for luxury. The Ravens have swiss cheese on the oline.

We’re going to win this division. Before the season starts the pundits will agree. Ozzie Newsome has done nothing to improve last years weakness. That oline stunk and the year went down hill.

  20. jtbsteeler says: Mar 21, 2014 5:40 PM

    Ozzie wanted McClain too.

  21. Nofoolnodrool says: Mar 21, 2014 5:40 PM

Aw so cute the love for Ozzie, but I don’t know if I should laugh or pass gas….I guess I’ll do both.

  22. bigbenownsthenfl says: Mar 21, 2014 5:50 PM

ratbirds how was 3rd place in the division last year????? hahahaha

  23. magicmtndan says: Mar 21, 2014 5:57 PM

Hey Coach Harbaugh, how desperate are you to bolster your best-NFL-defense-in-Maryland?

This guy wasn’t interesting to the Rams and they drafted him err oops, never mind, he was never drafted by any team.

You Ozzie junkies should be worried about the Ratbirds. They’ve got this guy on defense, a world champion wife beater at running back and an overpaid QB who had one good year.

  24. lovefootball4life says: Mar 21, 2014 6:20 PM

Interesting. This puts Ihedigbo on the outside looking in. Does he have FS potential?

bigben, 3rd is pretty much the same as 2nd. The way you felt, we felt. 8-8 and out of the post season sucked. For the Ravens this was the first time in 5 seasons. I realize the Steelers might be getting used to missing the playoffs and finishing behind first in the division but certainly we Ravens don’t like it.

  25. scoobies05 says: Mar 21, 2014 7:19 PM

you Steelers fans are awesome. your team is in steady decline so you brag about your 6 rings and how you are so happy that you finished 2nd in the division due to a tie breaker. you bash Ozzie and yet your sad excuse for a gm couldn’t hold his jock. the passing gas line was funny though. good times

  26. bigbenownsthenfl says: Mar 21, 2014 7:35 PM

6 super bowls to 2……. u may see 6 in 50 more years!!!! lolololololol

enjoy steeler dynasty week on nfl network. hey when is raven dynasty week???? hahahahahah!!

  28. motleytrap says: Mar 21, 2014 7:59 PM

“In Spagnuolos’ last season coaching the Rams Darian started 13 games”

In his last season they were 2-14 and had like 10 defensive backs end up on IR. I believe Stewart had 20 missed tackles, second most among NFL safeties.

Every team wants safeties with starting experience but don’t make it out to be more than it is.

  29. scoobies05 says: Mar 21, 2014 9:14 PM

your teams last playoff appearance was 3 years ago and you got tebowed…hahahahahha
took the steelers 40 years to be relevant…took the ravens 5…hahahhahaha
since the ravens came into existence they have won 2 superbowls…same as the steelers…hahahahaha

  30. scoobies05 says: Mar 21, 2014 9:15 PM

steelers drafted limas sweed. enough said

  31. pluto92 says: Mar 22, 2014 7:37 AM

This is just another typical Ozzie signing. Sign a guy to a cheap short term contract and let him prove himself or you move on with no major cap hit. Just like he did with Corey Graham, Daryl Smith, Ihedigbo, etc, etc.

  32. jtbsteeler says: Mar 22, 2014 9:59 AM

The Ravens are the old browns cut it out. You arent a fresh franchise stop lying

  33. jtbsteeler says: Mar 22, 2014 10:41 AM

Still waiting for the improvement… I see regression, especially the oline. No way shape form or fashion have the Ravens had a better offseason than the Steelers. The cops in NJ are working ($$$$) with Rice to get off easy.

  34. lovefootball4life says: Mar 22, 2014 11:32 AM

Legally the Ravens were considered an expansion team because it allowed Cleveland to keep the property and heritage of the Browns. Only ones who argue that are Steeler fans because they don’t like to admit how successful the Ravens have been since they were established in 1996.

An expansion team with the players from the Browns coming to Baltimore en masse is not by definition a true expansion team. Hang on to your lies and deceit the core values of the franchise and fans. Who cares what you call them but you can start with a joke or an embarrassment or maybe wannabes ….outside of the inner Harbor no body respects them regardless of hòw you rewrite their origins.

I think you are wrong about Steeler fans. We don’t care what you have done we care about how you have done what you have done. We don’t respect the actions of your players, coaches, and a lot of , but not all of, your fans. To deny your accomplishments would be fool hardy to put the franchise on a pedestal would be a joke.

Mr Smith will soon realize that haste makes waste.

  37. jimmyjames65 says: Mar 22, 2014 1:02 PM

Nothing but a depth signing. Steeler fans don’t need to get their panties in a bunch.

  38. SmashMouthFootball says: Mar 22, 2014 6:39 PM

I’m not rewriting any origins. You can research it for yourself. Your hate is really showing through.

  39. jtbsteeler says: Mar 22, 2014 8:55 PM

When you leave a city and pack a whole team of players with you, thats not true expanaion. Thats the Rams leaving LA and going to St. Louis.

“ratbirds how was 3rd place in the division last year????? hahahaha”

If the Steelers pick before the Ravens, then how were the Ravens in 3rd and not 2nd last year? If the Steelers were in 2nd then the Ravens would draft before them. Just a few more examples of the best Trolls on the internet, Steeler fans

  41. jimmyjames65 says: Apr 21, 2014 10:04 PM

Ravens had a tougher schedule. Steelers thought they could sneak into the playoffs. Almost. Too bad they lost their chance. Ravens are improved. Steelers, not so much.

  42. jimmyjames65 says: Apr 21, 2014 10:10 PM

Ravens will just get more ex-Texans players. Like Leach and Jacoby Jones. I think Ozzie is looking at an OL from the Texans. Probably depends on the draft. I think Omar Brown will fill in just like Ihedigbo did. Only Elam will move to SS.
