Vick picks the Jets

With Mark Sanchez exiting New York, another high profile quarterback is arriving.

The Jets have announced that Mike Vick has signed the team.  Per a league source, it’s a one-year deal.  Which means Vick will get a chance to hit the market again in 2015.

Vick, the first overall pick in the 2001 draft, spent six seasons with the Falcons before a guilty plea to federal gambling and dogfighting charges resulted in nearly two years in custody.  He signed with the Eagles after his release in 2009, starting as the No. 3 man on the depth chart but seizing the starting job after the offseason trade of Donovan McNabb and an early-season concussion to Kevin Kolb.

Vick played very well in 2010, regressing in 2011 and 2012.  He won the job again in 2013, after a lengthy competition with Nick Foles.  Injuries and ineffectiveness, coupled with stellar play from Foles, resulted in Vick quietly surrendering the job.

In New York, Vick surely will set his sights on doing to Geno Smith what Vick did to Kolb and what Foles did to Vick.  He wouldn’t be going to New York if he didn’t envision a chance to play.  And Vick surely believes he’s better than Smith.

Vick very well may be.  As Ross Tucker pointed out earlier this week on NBCSN’s Pro Football Talk, the 8-8 Jets quite likely would have been a playoff team in 2013, if Vick had been the starting quarterback.

Coach Rex Ryan’s job arguably hinges on Vick or Smith getting the team to the playoffs in 2014.

  1. screw you woody, idzik rex and marty. How can you bring this louse to NY. Let him play in the league BUT NOT HERE!!!! I hope your team fails, that you lose 16 games and that people bail on their PSAL payments. You just lost a loyal fan who went to 1-3 games a year.
    Signed,
Guy who was a die hard jets fan until 5 minutes ago

    And he stinks

  2. Vick is better than Smith, but that is not saying much. Vick is a solid 2nd stringer and Geno is a 3rd string guy.

All that activity today and the Jets still don’t have a bonifide starting QB on their roster.

  3. Good move for both sides. Gives Vick a legitimate chance to play and fill in for Smith while the Jets wait to find their franchise QB in 2015. Think it’s a clear sign they know Smith isn’t the guy.

  4. Good for Vick, I think he’ll be good in NYJ, and behind there O-line if he can stay healthy. He should have no problem beating out Geno Smith.

  5. I’m not a fan of Michael Vick but it’s a good move for the Jets. I think he gives them a better chance to win in 2014 than Geno and they’ll have a chance at a wildcard spot.

  6. Damn you all for taking my sundays from me…I thought you could never find a worse fit for NY than Tebow but the ineptness and foolhardiness of the jets has wowed me again.

  7. YES! I love Vick! NY Jets should let him start, sign MJD, another WR to complement Decker(Santonio Holmes, maybe?) and address the secondary via the draft and veteran DB’s(Ryan Clark, Asante Samuel, Carlos Rogers) and, dare i say the Jets could make the playoffs?

  8. Well, that’s one way to set your franchise back years.

“Hey, let’s take a QB in the 2nd round, we’ll start him every single game in 2013, and then…and then…we’ll sign a big name vet QB in his 30’s that will take his spot. And then, after he gets knocked out for the season, like he has the past 2 seasons, we’ll put the young buck back in there and tell everyone that he was our guy all along! This is so brilliant!! Super Bowl!!!!”

  9. First 4 games of 2013 until injury
1080 Yards thrown, 5 tds thrown, 2 rushing tds, 2 interceptions, 228 rushing yards
Extrapolated over Full Season:4320 yards thrown , 20 tds thrown, 8 rushing tds , 8 interceptions , 912 rushing yards

Also, keep in mind that the Eagles played only 3 playoff teams ALL OF LAST SEASON. It just so happened that those teams Vick had to face weeks 2, 3 and 4.All non-supporters of Vick should really know what they are talking about before they open their insignificant mouths.

He is constantly injured, this is true, but when healthy the guy can flat out ball.Oh, and one more thing: If you add Vicks projected passing yards and rushing yards, it would be equal to the amount of yards that Manning just put up in his record setting season.

  10. Career disappointment

No player has gotten more hype and press while producing so little

He had that one partial season with the Eagles when he reached his potential but that’s it

  11. “the 8-8 Jets quite likely would have been a playoff team in 2013, if Vick had been the starting quarterback.”

And the 16-3 Seahawks likely would have been 19-0 (23-0 including preseason!), if Percy Harvin didn’t need hip surgery. Anyone can make silly baseless claims.

  13. As an eagles fan, I’m very happy for Vick. I believe in the power of second chances and he made the most of his while now being a role model for the young guys in the league. Thanks for your time in Philly, Vick, it was certainly fun to watch (especially in 2010). Best of luck in NY.

  14. vick is a threat when healthy and compared to most of the garbage under center, that’s a pretty good signing

  15. Vick was never the guy…. scramblers never are

The Jets make yet another suicidal move.

  16. The 8-8 Jets would’ve been competitive for the 5 games that Vick was healthy, at which point Geno Smith would be thrust into the fire without having spent any time with the 1’s.

Smith would then proceed to play even worse due to lack of preparation, and his confidence would have been shattered, having been relegated back to the bench once Vick was healthy enough to make another 4 game tour.

    +++++++++++++++

    Except for Tim Tebow

  18. The circus never ends. This team needs new ownership and new management. I wish everyone would boycott this team by not attending their home games, then ownership and management would get the message.

  19. Congrats to him , Now the jets can be taken serious and come back from a deficit since Vick IS NOT a GAME manager. , Any hating that i notice on the blogs are coming from fans from the other teams withing that division.

Finally Vick is coming to a team that when he put up a certain amount of points the jets D is good enough to HOLD it.Thats the problem when he( was HEALTHY) and played in philly, Their OFFENSE was top notch but the D couldn’t stop my grandmother.

  20. What’s up with the “Vick Picks Jets” headline?

Why do you continue with this strange narrative that he had all of these choices and that after careful consideration, this is where he decided to go?

Could you please list all of the other openings that still exist that he could have been considering?

  21. I love hearing people say they are diehard fans, but won’t follow the Jets because they sign Vick. It’s a team, not a player. We are better off without you.

  22. Yeah, he’s a real sweetheart now. He’ll be makin Kibbles & Bits commercials before long.

  23. Only problem with this is that, again, the Jets have a QB controversy brewing. But at least they don’t have Sanchez!

  24. It’s a guarantee Vick misses multiple games. The only question is how many.

Vick is on the decline and I don’t see the benefit of starting him over Geno. Sure, Geno didn’t light the world on fire but we know what Vick brings at this point (little to nothing) so why not go with the young quarterback who has more potential?

Eric Decker is going from Peyton Manning to Vick and/or Geno. Man what a downgrade.

  25. I wonder how many of these commenters here bashing the Jets are fans of the 14 NFL teams that had a worse record than the Jets last season?

  26. I agree with others here that the Jets realize that though Geno Smith has done well his rookie year, he’s probably grading out as a good back-up QB.

So, they’re bringing in the talented but oft-injured Vick to lead the Offense this year and will look to next years draft to acquire a young QB–or maybe draft one this year?…

  27. The circus never ends is right. It’s too bad, most Jet fans I personally know are passionate, and knowledgable. This will be an episode worse than the Favre one. It’s a shame. Vick really will show the world he is a heartless coward with no backbone who cares only about himself. The choirboy act is pure PR. I would let Charles Manson play with my kids before even letting him eat from our trash can. This will be fun to watch all the same.

  28. It appears we should be looking for a new coach and GM after this season if that bum starts. My gut says Geno still beats him in camp. I believe the game was just starting to slow down for Geno and he is way more of an efficient passer than most give him credit for. It makes no sense to bench the kid now as it will just break him. He’s already thrown for more yards in a season than Vick ever has, and we had squat at the skill positions. Guess my decision to bail on my season tickets and lose all that PSL money was the right one after all. Never liked Vick dating back to his college days, still don’t now. You are only as good as your back up QB, so let the train wreck begin!!!!!

  29. Most overrated player in NFL history. Look at the clowns won loss record…playoff record and crap passing stats – oh but he ca run really really fast. Who cares? Jets are a laughingstock.

  30. Incognito insults a teammate and nobody wants him, Vick kills dogs and well you know the rest. Stay classy Jets….

  31. Congrats on your recent Felon signing Jets Fans! You must be so proud of your team management right now. Can OJ come out of retirement to beef up the backfield? Hernandez should be out of jail in 10-20….never too soon to look to the future for a solid tight end!

  32. If not Vick then who for the Jets. Geno is not beating out Vick but he can learn and become ready for 2015 and beyond.

  33. The amount of Vick hate is almost astounding!!! I mean jeez, we have NFL players that have killed HUMAN BEINGS that get less heated and hated comments than MV7!!!!LOL The dude can flat out ball, in the pocket outside the pocket don’t matter. He was playing well up untill he got injured last year. Durability is his downside NOT ABILITY!! He clearly beat out Foles last summer and now Foles is considered a top flight QB!! Go figure. Now that I have said this, I have to also say that I think that this is a terrible thing to do to Geno. Like most rookies he had an up/down campaign but for the last 4 weeks of the season he had the highest QBR in the ENTIRE NFL. So he definitely showed improvement, and deserves to be given a solid opportunity. Bringing in MV7 is not like bringing in Ryan Fitzpatrick!!!LOL

  34. Pretty shrewd move by Idzik.

You’ve got competition at QB now. If Geno can’t cut your about to find out, and they’ve got no long term commitment to a motivated Vick.
And if the whole thing washes out this year?
You go chase Cam Newton with those QB $$.

Why didn’t you add the rest of the games he played in? Or his 2 lost fumbles? First 4 games he had 1080 yards, the next 3 he played in he had < 200 yards total.

You can play the projected stats game all you want, but if you did that with Matt Stafford, he had 2617 yards, a 62% completion, 16TDs passing and 2 TD's rushing and 6 INTs. Project that out and its a record setting year in yards and 36 combined TD's. But we all know it didn't end up that way, now did it?

  36. Memo to Geno and Mike… if Rex tells you to go in during the 4th quarter of the Jets/Giants preseason game, say “HELL no” and kick him in the butt.

  37. It would seem the Jets have no I intention of being a competitive team this season….

I mean Vick has shown that, while he can be good in limited stretches…. he’s never been a great QB that can carry a team. To even call him a good QB would be taking liberties with the word “good”. Not to mention the odds of him staying healthy all season are about 1000 to 1.

At the end of the day, the fact that Vick is even still in the NFL is a bit shocking, but the fact that a team that likely wants to be a contender signed him is even more shocking.

  38. Smart move to bring in competition for Geno who can be a solid backup, which is something they never did with Sanchez. Vick may have a little left in him, but hard to bet on because it’s almost a certainty that he won’t stay healthy. Best case scenario for Jets is that Vick pushes Geno and he takes some major steps forward.

  39. Ha!
    Hahahahaha!
Sorry, I’ll be serious. Great signing by the Je…

    Hahahahaha…never mind. What train wreck!

  40. This makes no sense at all — which makes it another day at the office, par for the course, for the Jets.

LMAO !!! Wow… loyal fan ? You don’t sound like one to me. I stayed loyal to my team even when we had Grossman & John Beck as our QB’s. What a crybaby

  43. I feel for Jets fans who don’t want to root for Vick. If you think it’s tough now, wait until his deadbeat brother Marcus starts tweeting insults at the fanbase.

I think there’s a relatively decent guy in Michael Vick who understands his mistakes. Maybe, maybe not. I can say for a certainty that there is nothing redeeming about his loser brother.

  47. I love all these comments from non jet fans, they hate the jets so much that they are trolling all the jet news…..lol that’s because there team sucks ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaa gotta love it Go Gang Green

  48. 5 million this year is a nice haul…Considering his history, that should be about a million per game he might actually play…

  49. Question to the loyal Jets fans: What is Idzik’s strategic plan? No offense but he has me baffled.

  50. Vick has gotten every coach he’s played for fired so this is most likely Idzik’s way of getting rid of Rex.

Vick doesn’t win QB battles by reading defenses, hitting his third read or making quick decisions. He wins QB battles by running around, locking on his first read, and running if he can’t figure out if the receiver is open.

As long as he can put up a highlight reel play or two using his athletiism the press continues to oooh and aaah over him while overlooking the fact he doesn’t check down, can’t read defenses or make quick decisions.

He does tend to do better early in the season before defenses begin to settle in. Once the defenses get in stride he’s toast because they bait him and switch things up and he just isn’t smart enough.

  51. We’re laughing up in New England. The Circus comes back to NY Round 2. The first round was so much fun with Tebow shadowing Sanchez all year. Wonder if Geno will handle it better.

  52. “The Jets have announced that Mike Vick has signed the team”

The Jets really are trying to change things up. Usually it is the team that signs the player, but this time around Vick signed the team!

I guess it is about time he paid back all that money he stole on those two $100million plus contracts he signed.

  53. This is so funny. Jets fans are so delusional its hilarious watching for a far. I feel bad for my guy Rex. The brightside to all of this, is he’ll most likely be fired after this 4-12 season and return to baltimore to actually win championships. Which seem to elude the NY Jets
