Report: Steelers to meet with Bills LB Arthur Moats

The Steelers will reportedly host an unrestricted free agent linebacker who could offer some positional versatility in their 3-4 scheme.

According to Alan Robinson of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Steelers are slated to meet with Buffalo’s Arthur Moats as early as Monday.

Moats (6-2, 250) started 12 games at weak-side linebacker for the Bills in 2013. He was also listed as Buffalo’s top backup middle linebacker. The 26-year-old Moats may have the ability to play inside and outside in the Steelers’ 3-4 scheme, a la Lawrence Timmons.

A James Madison product, Moats has recorded 141 tackles and 5.0 sacks in four NFL seasons.

  1. “The 26-year-old Moats may have the ability to play inside and outside in the Steelers’ 3-4 scheme, a la Lawrence Timmons.”

Timmons is really pretty useless outside. The only reason he plays there is because the OLB depth is attrocious.

Regardless, it sounds like this would be a solid depth pickup. Certainly better than chris carter or whoever else they plan to have as their top backup OLBs currently.

  2. A solid young veteran LB that can play both outside and in…this would be a good depth signing.

  3. Timmons could have been a great OLB if not for Harrison and Woodley. Coaches asked him to move inside early in his career and added bulk as a result. If he would have been groomed as an OLB throughout his career he would have been a consistent 10+ sacks guy. He was lightning quick in his first couple of years.

  4. You’d be getting a very good one, Steelers. New schemes and new players in Buffalo may make him odd man out.

  5. Sign him! this would be a great pickup! We need Blount and a starting DE also. So bring Timmons in and restructure his contract! The Woodley money saved by cutting him doesnt kick in till June 1st.

  6. Moats is one of those linebackers that with every snap he takes on the field will get better and better as time goes on. He has what it takes now to play either LB’er position and can play special teams also. Off the field, like on, Moats is a class act, donating his time to those in need and always staying active in the community. He will be sorely missed in Buffalo and who ever signs him will be getting a great deal. It is unfortunate that with the new system being installed in Buffalo he is the odd man out.

Don’t cross the Moats! (Ask Brett Favre)

  7. Timmons is one of the problems with the defense. He can’t play outside. And he can only play the easier inside position.

Timmons is too dumb to call the defense. That’s why Foote has been around so long. He’s not that good but he is smart and tells Timmons where to line up.

When Foote got injured, Timmon’s play declined. They had to play a 6th round rookie and they gave him the green dot to call the plays, not Timmons.

They had to play Polamalu basically as an ILB last year because Timmons can’t do anything but run and chase like a dog after a fire engine.

PLEASE come up with a better insult than the “age” ones. There are a TOTAL of 4 players (2 on O, 2 on D) over the age of 30 that are going to start.

    FOUR!

  9. Let me get this straight: they’re going to go after Moats *and* bring back Harrison? I guess this means Ben will restructure his contract to something like “a million a year for the next 50 years.” Why not?
Bring back Santonio, too, and sign MJD.
Hey, as long as we have Ike in the secondary, we’re fine, right?

  10. He was a DE in college and he started his NFL career rushing the passer in a hybrid defense, I thought he had some upside there but he needed to get a lot better against the run. After that year the coaches moved him to ILB which didn’t make much sense, then Wanny came on board and he didn’t see the field.
With Pettine he was the thumper on early downs, he had solid games there and still could improve.
He’s a solid contributor on STs.

    How about THIS one:

    Your HC is a cheater.

  12. Let the haters hate…they will kneel down at the end 2014 to kiss the rooney’s 7th ring…ahhhhhhhhhhhhahahahaha……bwahhhhahaha…

  13. Hosting a backup linebacker. With backups most teams don’t bother announcing until they sign if they bother announcing at all. But when you are desperate to save face and look active you let it leak you are hosting a backup linebacker.
