Report: Eagles could be next home for Mark Sanchez

New York Jets v New England Patriots Getty Images

An item that you’d think would be handled with more urgency — if not BREAKING in all caps — has been mentioned almost as an aside.

Chris Mortensen just tweeted out what appeared to be a procedural note about the “failed physical” designation the Jets are using with former quarterback Mark Sanchez, saying it wouldn’t affect his next step — signing with the Eagles.

Oh, OK then. The Jets and Eagles swapped backup quarterbacks, and Sanchez won’t need to lose his green headbands.

The fact the news was treated so casually is unusual, since the Eagles haven’t otherwise been mentioned among the usual suspects for Sanchez.

The Eagles will want to take a long look at Sanchez’s surgically repaired shoulder, unless Mortensen has already checked that out for them too.

I would rather have Tim Tebow as my QB…I hope this isn’t real life

  4. babyphife says: Mar 24, 2014 4:55 PM

As a long time Jets fan i have always maintained that Sanchez will win a Super Bowl ring as someones backup QB……..

  5. intelligent cement says: Mar 24, 2014 4:56 PM

Gotta have at least one consistent turnover QB on the roster, right?

  6. elliottcovert says: Mar 24, 2014 4:56 PM

Sanchez doesn’t even count as a notable player at this stage of his career. People didn’t freak out when there was news about Joey Harrington or Jeff George, right?

  7. astburyj says: Mar 24, 2014 4:56 PM

If he is around good talent he will do fine. People love to hate the butt fumble guy but he went to the AFC championship twice.

Just don’t look at the hair, he’s not that bad.

  8. raiders4lyfe17 says: Mar 24, 2014 4:57 PM

Teach foles the ways of the butt

  9. tampabaybucsman says: Mar 24, 2014 4:57 PM

Somehow, the Jets won the QB swap.

  10. grimreaper12 says: Mar 24, 2014 4:58 PM

The man responsible for the butt fumble.

Sanchez > Geno ( not saying much ).

The Jets have last place in the AFC East locked up. Although the Bills will give them a run for their money.

  11. nygmann says: Mar 24, 2014 4:58 PM

Not sure that is a smart move for Sanchez since Foles is clearly the #1 starter there. The Rams might have been a better fit for Sanchez; especially since Bradford is coming off of a season ending injury last year.

Nick Foles says that’s great cause sanchez is “my man”

Vick and Sanchez swapping clip boards

The best backup QB in the NFL is Matt Cassell.

BTW, watch all the love start pouring out for Sanchez now that he isn’t on the Jets anymore lol

  15. trezzyt says: Mar 24, 2014 5:01 PM

Mark Sanchez is not that bad I would say Trent Dilfer 2.0
Send him to a team wit D and running game and he can succeed like his early years with the jets but he is not a leader and will not lead a team with a great team and coach behind him

  16. richardmswartz says: Mar 24, 2014 5:01 PM

    Good, some competition for Barkley.

  17. boredfootball says: Mar 24, 2014 5:04 PM

The Eagles are collecting awful USC QBs now apparently.

  18. phillyupperdecker says: Mar 24, 2014 5:04 PM

As far as veteran QB’s go, Sanchez is a decent backup QB. Barkley moves to 3rd team and continues to develop and Sanchez is best FA QB option available. Must better move than spending a draft pick on a QB.

  19. elmerbrownelmerbrown says: Mar 24, 2014 5:05 PM

Stop wit da eiggles being home for everybody that become available

  20. 80sbroncofan says: Mar 24, 2014 5:05 PM

I don’t think its a good fit. Eagles run that fast paced offense and needs a qb that can make quick correct decisions. Sanchez is good when you only have to throw the ball 10 times a game.

  21. distracted9 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:06 PM

Why not trade D Jax to Oak for Pryor?

  22. kev86 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:07 PM

cue up the odd couple music..

  23. ezerick86 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:07 PM

Just curious, do 2 mediocre USC QBs make one good one?

  24. schmedley69 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:10 PM

It looks like the theory that Chip Kelly only likes “running QB’s” doesn’t hold much water. He chose Foles over Vick, drafted Matt Barkley, and now he might sign Sanchez. I could out-run all 3 of those guys, and I’m an overweight 44 year-old guy.

  25. eaglefan94 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:11 PM

I like this signing if it happens. We need to replace Vick with another vet, not just draft a QB again. I wouldn’t be comfortable going into this season with three QBs with a combined three seasons under their belts. Sanchez gets a lot of flak but he does okay when he has talent around him. In other words, he’s a back up.

  26. wrossi81 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:12 PM

The Eagles are a run-first team with LeSean McCoy and now with Sproles added into the mix. If Sanchez had to actually take a regular season snap at QB, he could probably keep things alive longer than Barkley at this point. I’m not wild about it, but there is no backup that says you are more committed to your QB than Mark Sanchez.

  27. DrSteveBrule says: Mar 24, 2014 5:13 PM

He’s better than their backup Whitehurst. Maybe even better than starter Locker. Tennessee should give him a look.

  28. thrstr says: Mar 24, 2014 5:14 PM

    yes, yes, yes!
    signed: NFC East

  29. zipnyc says: Mar 24, 2014 5:15 PM

Sanchez makes sense for a team with a strong running game. Statistically he had the worst QBR out of any starting QB the four years he played. And I’m pretty sure he led in turnovers during that time as well.

  30. zeke2517 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:16 PM

“I would rather have Tim Tebow as my QB”

I honestly don’t know how anyone who has watched football over the last decade can say that with a straight face.

  31. freevinnycurry says: Mar 24, 2014 5:16 PM

Eagles are drafting a youngster and he will be the #3 after Foles/Barkley next year. Play this no mind.

  32. jlgsoccer says: Mar 24, 2014 5:17 PM

upgrading from hot dogs to cheesesteaks on the sidelines. lets go snachez

  33. cptbuff says: Mar 24, 2014 5:17 PM

    Matt Leinart is still available.

  34. jbeagles23 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:22 PM

He’s more reliable than Barkley right now

  35. seabreezes51 says: Mar 24, 2014 5:28 PM

Go read the scouting reports on Sanchez before he was drafted. Looks like a good fit in a Chip Kelly offense to me. If the heat is off and he can get straightened out, its a good move for both the Eagles and Sanchez.

  36. mlmeier says: Mar 24, 2014 5:36 PM

Get rid of DeSean and sign Mark Sanchez? Perfect. Why don’t we trade LeSean McCoy straight up for Trent Richardson while we’re at it?

  37. golicsloveschildfromphilly says: Mar 24, 2014 5:38 PM

Gotta love the NITWITS on this board – must be a bunch of teenagers. For the love of god he is a backup to Foles. He will provide an insurance policy should Foles go down. He is more competent than the back up qb’s that sit behind the old geezers – Manning, Brady, and Brees.

  38. r8rsfan says: Mar 24, 2014 5:40 PM

Comparing Sanchez to MeSean is a slap in Jackson’s face.

  39. rkov says: Mar 24, 2014 5:43 PM

He won more playoff games than Vick

  40. ravenswhat says: Mar 24, 2014 5:45 PM

I knew chipper wasn’t sold on Foles I KNEW IT. Haha eagles fans. Losing your best weapon and gaining Sanchez. Holy Lol.

  48. mythaimyke says: Mar 24, 2014 8:38 PM

When is Marky coming out of the closet?

  49. doe22us says: Mar 24, 2014 8:49 PM

Mort, used to be a credible NFL insider about 15yrs ago, know he just spouts gibberish, just like the rest of them.

  50. bleedgreen11 says: Mar 24, 2014 9:04 PM

strong running game, hopefully an improving defense… good receiving corp (Zach Ertz anyone? Darren Sproles)… The Sanchize has won 4 playoff games banking on all those things… I think he is the most sensible backup available, now and in the draft. Plus he can contest with Matt Barkley for prettiest USC player on the team…

Also, DeSean didn’t play that great with Foles, most of his big games came with Vick, so we need to get over that, he doesn’t fit what Chip Kelly wants (he’s the little person that big people beat up) and he’s a distraction (with and/or without valid reason).

  51. boots44 says: Mar 24, 2014 9:23 PM

He could always work at geno”s if it doesn’t work out

  52. rubicon202 says: Mar 24, 2014 9:57 PM

if true bad move. Mark should think about a spot where the fans and media won’t have him under a microscope…but hey if its what he wants, whatever?

  53. vegetablemed says: Mar 25, 2014 1:01 AM

Did he fail a drug test?

  54. kastout11 says: Mar 25, 2014 8:12 AM

I like the signing. I would rather a QB with NFL starting experience, not to mention big game experience if Foles happens to get injured. Surrounded with talent, I think Sanchez can be a serviceable backup. If he gets in the game, I am sure he will appreciate actually having weapons at his disposal. Note to Sanchez, your best offensive weapon in Philly is not an overrated Santonio Holmes.

  55. scbaby2013 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:39 PM

People can hate on USC all they want but last time I checked USC has 4 qbs in the league. Palmer cassel Sanchez and Barkley. Fight on Trojans!!!
