Tony Romo’s not throwing the ball yet, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reiterated his faith in his quarterback by declaring him ahead of schedule.

Romo had back surgery in December, and all indications are he’ll be ready for the start of training camp.

He is ahead of expectations,” Jones said, via Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com. “He is ahead of where we expected him to be.”

Romo should be doing something when the team begins its offseason program on April 21, and Jones was adamant Romo’s presence will keep the team from being in a rebuilding mode.

“You don’t rebuild with Romo,” Jones said. “The firepower we have on offense and where we are with our running backs, and our receivers -- you don’t rebuild with an offense that’s got the capability we’ve got. We didn’t bring [play-caller du jour Scott] Linehan in here to rebuild.”

Having Romo up and running would be a big benefit, and proving he’s well enough to lead the Cowboys would be a help, considering what they just paid him.
