Chip Kelly “excited” to have entire offseason with Matt Barkley

Last April, the Eagles liked Matt Barkley enough to trade into the first pick of Round Four to take him.

However, the Eagles reportedly have interest in adding former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, which could pit Sanchez and Barkley for the top reserve role behind starter Nick Foles this season.

Speaking at the NFL meetings on Wednesday, Eagles coach Chip Kelly indicated he was looking forward to having an entire offseason to work with Barkley, who had four picks, three fumbles and no TD passes in three appearances as a rookie.

“I thought I saw him improve his arm,” Kelly said, according to an interview transcript furnished by the Pro Football Writers of America. “He was a little hurt coming out of college. But I’m excited about where he is and getting chance to fully work with him.

“When you miss OTAs and that Phase One part of the program and the Phase Two part when guys are throwing and working on mechanics, he wasn’t here yet because we hadn’t drafted him.

“The fact that we can get him in and participate in the full offseason program, we’re excited about where he is.”

For Barkley, building on his first NFL season — and leveraging everything he’s already learned in Kelly’s system — will be key in whether he goes up from No. 3 to No. 2 on the depth chart.

UPDATE 12:22 p.m. ET Thursday: According to Jason La Canfora of CBS, the Eagles will sign Sanchez on Thursday.

Can’t be great news for Nick Foles.

i feel this is a downgrade at the backup position if we sign Sanchez and have Barkley…this is kind of scary if Foles goes down.

    No he’s not.

This is why I think it’s dumb to draft a QB. This isn’t a perfect example, but most need several yrs to develop, which means they’ve probably moved on from the team that drafted them by the time that happens. They’ve wasted a draft pick and picked up another guy that some other team drafted 2-3-4 yrs ago and is now ready. Don’t waste the pick and find a recycled guy like Sanchez, Barkley, or even a Sam Bradford-type of guy.

    Coach Chip has mental issues.

Is that who Barkeley plays for? Huh.

Chip Kelly is doing nothing more than trying to talk this guy’s trade value up. I happen to know that they aren’t very high on him and are looking to move him. They would like to get a third rounder so look for him to get a lot of fake praise in the next few weeks.

Foles, Barkely, and now the Sanchise.
Nice collection, unless of course Foles gets hurt.

The big question for the Eagles is what happens with Foles? He had a lot of success last year, Oddly, that success does not align with his college career, where it can be said that he was only marginally successful.

Foles was erratic and was prone to looking great one series and bad the next. I think the jury is still out on him, as Kelly placed him in good positions to look good.

I’m anxious to see him sustain his level of play consistently over a large sample size. We’ll see how that goes. Barkley and Sanchez … meh.

So excited about it that they’ve decided to sign Mark Sanchez.

“Can’t be great news for Nick Foles”

Only if he shows that last year’s success was a fluke.

“This is why I think it’s dumb to draft a QB”.

This might be the dumbest sentence ever written on this site.

Nuts to Sanchez. Nuts to Barkley another USC, QB that already is a bust.
    They need a real backup

Matt Barkley is a nice guy. I wish him success in the NFL. So is Nick Foles. Between you two, let’s make the eagles fly strong and high!
    Good luck!

Barkley, Sanchez, next John Booty, Mike Leinart, carson palmer via a trade. Kelly must really like former USC quaterbacks.
