With the signing of former Chicago Bears quarterback Josh McCown to a two-year contract, new Tampa Bay head coach Lovie Smith seemed fairly certain the Buccaneers had found their quarterback.
General manager Jason Licht wasn’t so quick to rule out Mike Glennon or draft pick potentially earning the job.
In an interview with PFT from the owner’s meetings in Orlando, Fla., Licht said he expect a competition for the starting quarterback job.
“Well someone has to take the first rep and it’s gonna be Josh McCown, but there is gonna be a competition,” Licht said. “Competition drives the best out of both people I think this is the best possible situation Mike Glennon can be in to have a guy like Josh McCown in the building.”
Licht also wouldn’t rule out taking a quarterback with the seventh pick in the draft.
“It’s possible it can be a quarterback, tackle, corner it’s gonna be the best players available,” Licht said.
Smith obviously has a comfort level with McCown, who played for two years under Smith in Chicago. However, Glennon also showed promise as a rookie last season. Glennon completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards with 19 touchdown and nine interceptions in 13 starts for the Buccaneers.
As Licht notes, McCown is No. 1 on the depth chart right now. Whether he will still be No. 1 on the depth chart come September remains to be seen.
