Ravens offer support: “There is more to Ray Rice than this”

Ray Rice AP

The Baltimore Ravens are standing behind running back Ray Rice, who was indicted today for aggravated assault after allegedly knocking his fiancee unconscious last month.

The team issued a brief statement after Rice’s indictment was announced.

“This is part of the due process for Ray. We know there is more to Ray Rice than this one incident,” the statement read.

There may be more to Rice than this one incident, but the reports about this one incident are very serious: Police reportedly have surveillance video of Rice knocking his fiancee out. That video has not been publicly released, although another video that has been made public appears to show Rice dragging his unconscious fiancee out of an elevator.

Rice faces three to five years in prison on the aggravated assault charge.

“We know there is more to Ray Rice ”

    Alas, the video was incomplete.

  3. barsfordays says: Mar 27, 2014 5:32 PM

I would cut him. He’s not worth the headache. A 3.1 avg and 660 yards rushing is honestly flat out brutal and he only had 300 yards recieving. This guy is replaceable in the draft. Bishop Sankey is the truth!

  4. idontliveinmymomsbasement says: Mar 27, 2014 5:32 PM

He was released on his own recognizance as he is not a threat to run.

  5. realnflmaster says: Mar 27, 2014 5:34 PM

They should be fined and lose draft picks and their championship from two seasons ago if they refuse to cut him.

  6. youtubeingravenvids says: Mar 27, 2014 5:36 PM

You cant blame the organization people. Ray Rice is a grown man, it is not his employers fault he did this, it is strictly his.

  7. thetooloftools says: Mar 27, 2014 5:40 PM

    He deserves due process.

  8. sabatimus says: Mar 27, 2014 5:43 PM

His name is Ray what do u expect ,he learned from Lewis

  11. shoesfinest says: Mar 27, 2014 6:04 PM

Oh no! Who will jump ball joe hand off to? Go Bengals!

  12. teal379 says: Mar 27, 2014 6:05 PM

While you can’t blame the Ravens for what Ray did – how they handle this is open to criticism, should the need arise.

The NFL female fan base is the largest growing domestic market for them. (notice all the ads for female cut/friendly NFL gear/jerseys in the last few years?)

They’ll approach this from a business angle if it gets to that and if so – I’d expect Ray to be unemployed.

  13. conormacleod says: Mar 27, 2014 6:06 PM

Since there is more to him, he should just be sentenced to the current crime that we are aware of. But if the authorities do find out what more there is to him, he can serve his sentences concurrently.

  14. ravenswhat says: Mar 27, 2014 6:13 PM

Ray is beloved in the community. This is extremely out of character for him and the Baltimore fans know this. End of story.

  15. bert1913 says: Mar 27, 2014 6:16 PM

you should never hit a woman

  16. clemenza58 says: Mar 27, 2014 6:32 PM

Just like there was more to Ray Lewis. Baltimore is all about the criminal element.

  17. 1rockyracoon says: Mar 27, 2014 6:36 PM

Oh, this must be the first time he knocked out a woman. I would hope there is more to him than this one incident, however, this is a pretty big character defining incident. He is a Raven so his job is safe. They’ll probably build a statue of him.

  18. surfinbird1 says: Mar 27, 2014 6:47 PM

Ozzie: Ray is still in our plans. After all look what RayRay got away with.

  19. elway6532 says: Mar 27, 2014 7:08 PM

There is more to everyone than their worst moment.

That doesn’t keep most people out of jail though.

  20. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 27, 2014 7:09 PM

I like that the team stands by him so much. That means less chance that any other team could get stuck with this guy. He’s a perfect fit for Baltimore since they unjustly won a Super Bowl I feel more comfortable with him playing with them instead of a legit Super Bowl winner.

  21. chicagosports2014 says: Mar 27, 2014 7:18 PM

Not that it’s a problem, but Ravens like to draft players with that one type of edge. “

  22. dfwhawkguy says: Mar 27, 2014 7:44 PM

At least he’s with the right team. They know how to make criminals feel right at home. Worked for Ray Lewis for years.

  23. gbmickey says: Mar 27, 2014 7:46 PM

The evidence shown is pretty damning and once the other video of knocking her out is shown he is done. Just on what was shown does anyone really think he will not get thrown in jail? Even the nitwits who defended him saying she was just drunk have no excuse now.

  24. alshonbrandontandem says: Mar 27, 2014 7:48 PM

Dez Bryant’s wondering what all the fuss is about

  25. slowboater1 says: Mar 27, 2014 7:49 PM

What are the Ravens supposed to say? They owe him like $5.5M on the cap if they cut him. The Ravens are screwed. Thanks Ray. Loser.

  26. scw1993 says: Mar 27, 2014 8:02 PM

Let’s see ravens’ fans hold their own players to the same high standard that they hold players of other teams. It won’t happen. Hypocrites.

  27. ravensbob says: Mar 27, 2014 8:12 PM

The Ravens are saying what they have to because eventually they will try and probably succeed in getting $ back from rice. As a Ravens fan I am sick of hearing what a good guy he is. No one should hit a woman. He is a small person not just in height.

  28. demstopper says: Mar 27, 2014 8:27 PM

Amazing how people hate on Baltimore, as if it’s somehow the Ravens’ fault that this happened and it’s something in the water in Baltimore. There are sooooo many players who have had serious run-ins with the law that didn’t play for the Ravens. Rae Carruth. Sam Hurd. Michael Vick. Lawrence Phillips (whom Ozzie talked Art Modell out of drafting in favor of Jonathan Ogden). Alfonso Dennard. Ben Roethlisberger. Kenny Britt. Aaron Hernandez. Plaxico Burress.

    So leave the Ravens alone.

  29. baltimoresnativeson says: Mar 27, 2014 8:29 PM

Perfet year to ask him to restructure

  30. flyeredup says: Mar 27, 2014 8:55 PM

Exactly, he is a woman beater

  31. steelcurtainn says: Mar 27, 2014 8:57 PM

There sure is more to rice than the ravens know. Probably like the other side of his back hand. He’s classless women beater who should be cut.

  32. espy70 says: Mar 27, 2014 9:00 PM

Nothing to see here, her face fell on his fist

  33. bradygirl12 says: Mar 27, 2014 9:02 PM

I notice that she is still being referred to as his “fiancee”. If she hasn’t left him and thinks he won’t do it again, then he must have knocked her senseless.

  34. sidepull says: Mar 27, 2014 9:12 PM

Its not the first time he’s done this I bet. Just the first time that pos got caught.
stand behind him and build a statue. That’s what batimore does. In denial all the time.

  35. ghostofspeedyduncan says: Mar 27, 2014 9:13 PM

There’s more to Ray Lewis than cutlery

  36. ravensbob says: Mar 27, 2014 9:23 PM

Rice should have been cut BEFORE the arrest.

  37. bigwinintx says: Mar 27, 2014 9:28 PM

Your “man” blasted a woman in the mouth and knocked her out cold, so cold that he had to drag her out of the elevator, and this organization “supports him”???
What the hell does that say to your female fan base?

  38. stevemad says: Mar 27, 2014 9:36 PM

“We know there is more to Ray Rice than this one incident,”

Exactly, those obviously weren’t his best moves, cause with a good right hook and a left upper cut…he can normally render them unconscious for days!

  39. ijahru says: Mar 27, 2014 9:51 PM

Because he is a pro athlete he won’t go to trial until after the season. I wish the NFL had a rule where if you are arrested for a felony and charges are brought against you you are suspended until the outcome. It isn’t fair to the team and it’s fans that some knuckleheads bring bad attention

  40. noladat says: Mar 27, 2014 9:51 PM

Yep more is it when he was not filmed beating women? He should be done. Don’t care about anything else he has ever done help kids or what ever. Hope he get real time cuz anyone else would for the same thing.

  41. banky74 says: Mar 27, 2014 10:19 PM

Well, nobody wanted to run between the tackles against the Ravens with a murderer there in the middle.

Maybe they’re just trying to give a little boost to the offense.

  42. mydogsnameisvick says: Mar 27, 2014 10:35 PM

Probably the tip of the iceberg…

  43. sorosbolshevism says: Mar 27, 2014 11:13 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t a league suspension give the Ravens some cap relief?

  44. xcflqb7 says: Mar 27, 2014 11:26 PM

Sounds like his fiancée is sticking with him according to the Philly papers; so maybe everyone should let the process play out:

“Rice and Palmer live in Reisterstown, Md. Their attorneys have said neither wanted to pursue charges. The simple-assault charge against Palmer was administratively dismissed.

Rice’s attorney, Michael Diamondstein of Philadelphia, said Thursday that Rice “vehemently denies” that he committed an aggravated assault.

“We do not believe as a matter of law that the charges can be substantiated,” Diamondstein said. “Neither Mr. Rice nor Ms. Palmer wish to go forward in this matter.”

He said Revel had refused to turn over the video to him, and would not comment any further on the incident. He said Rice and Palmer were “still together, in counseling and happy.”

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said this week at the league owners’ meetings that Rice’s arrest was “embarrassing and disappointing” but that he would still support the running back. The NFL is also monitoring the case.

  45. ginojohn says: Mar 27, 2014 11:26 PM

Where is the commish on this?????Players have been suspended from the league for wayyyy less than this?? Goodell and his office are a big joke!!!

  50. kyblue33 says: Mar 28, 2014 4:51 AM

More to Ray than this—Really, you mean at the trial they will want to know about how community minded he is? That info only comes out in the sentencing phase, today we are just looking at the knock your beloved out with a right-cross phase. He really sounds like a pillar of the community. Go crows, a Ravens..

  51. nivekred says: Mar 28, 2014 6:25 AM

Hey Demstopper, can you tell me when Ben Roethlisberger was ever arrested? Nope, didn’t think so. The NFL should suspend Rice for at least 8 games. Show the world that hitting women, let alone knocking one out is not something the the NFL can allow to happen with out stiff punishment.

  52. daburgher says: Mar 28, 2014 7:33 AM

And now Deonte Thompson? I know the team is located in Baltimore but they’re getting out of hand

  53. spoiledbratswhosuck says: Mar 28, 2014 7:39 AM

NFL has a huge image problem.

Franchises are nothing more than plantation owners who will do just about anything to protect a player since they see $$$$$.

  54. tvjules says: Mar 28, 2014 7:47 AM

Wonder how many more times since the elevator incident that Ray’s had to knock some sense into her over this?
Guys who hit women don’t change, but spending some time in the pokey may make him think twice the next time he raises his fist.

  55. Canton Bulldogs says: Mar 28, 2014 7:56 AM

“You can support the person without condoning the action”. If someone did something bad, stupid, and out of character would you want those close to you to turn their backs on you? Supporting him as a person doesn’t mean you support what he did.

  56. eb3110 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:17 AM

Love how everyone’s fans hate on how the Patriots and Belichick do things, but they cut Hernandez as soon as he was arrested, were proactive in the media to distance themselves and are swallowing big cap hits for multiple years because of it.

The Ravens stand by their guy even though there is video proof that he literally knocked a woman out. Even if he was a saint up until that moment in his life, he should still be cut. But they don’t want to ruin “their cap.”

  57. steelerfanjo says: Mar 28, 2014 9:03 AM

The Ravens always stand behind their criminals. You don’t want to be in front of a criminal. Ravens should be disbanded as a team. Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Stallworth, Suggs, Rice… the list goes on and on. NFL does nothing to this team… why?

  58. belichickrulz says: Mar 28, 2014 9:18 AM

Ray Rice will eventually be as honored in Baltimore as Ray Lewis. Aaron Hernandez was cut by the Patriots the day he was arrested. That’s the difference, and that’s why people are ‘hating on’ the Ravens.

  59. higheriqthanyou says: Mar 28, 2014 9:33 AM

Hey Pats, before congratulating yourselves, not hard to cut a guy who is serving time.

Not very productive from cell block C.

  60. ericintheburgh says: Mar 28, 2014 9:45 AM

Poor Ray! If only he would have taken his actions a step further, the rat birds could have built a statue for him and stuck it right next to Ray “I didn’t see anything” Lewis

  61. melikefootball says: Mar 28, 2014 10:17 AM

  62. rukkus1 says: Mar 28, 2014 12:10 PM

It’s a whole other monster to blast off and knock her out.

  64. slowboater1 says: Mar 28, 2014 6:22 PM

Why did his fiance’ drop charges? She didn’t want to lose her gravy train. What sane woman would drop charges on someone who upper-cuts you unconscious? Pitiful. As a Ravens fan, I’m embarrassed that Steve Bisciotti is so behind him. Give him counseling, fine. But to worship him? Really?
