Report of potential gang ties emerged not long before Eagles cut DeSean Jackson

DeSean Getty Images

So why did former Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson issue a statement denying that he belongs to a gang?  Not long before the Eagles cut Jackson, a lengthy report emerged on NJ.com suggesting that Jackson has suspected gang ties.

Specifically, Eliot Shorr-Parks and A.J. Perez report that the Eagles were concerned about “Jackson’s continued association with reputed Los Angeles street gang members who have been connected to two homicides since 2010.”

While Jackson is a suspect in neither killing, LAPD detective Eric Crosson told NJ.com that Jackson “routinely flashes Crip gang signs in photos on social media,” and that Crosson believes Jackson did so during at least one game.

“You don’t want to see anybody throwing up gang signs like he did in the Redskins game last year,” Crosson said.  “Those were neighborhood Crip gang signs and he flashed them during a game.  He may not be affiliated with the gang, but they don’t [ordinarily] take kindly to those not in the gang throwing up those gang signs.”

It’s unclear how much the gang connection (if there is one) played in the decision to cut Jackson.  Per the report, the team also was concerned about his “bad attitude, an inconsistent work ethic, missed meetings and a lack of chemistry with head coach Chip Kelly.”

Regardless, whoever signs Jackson needs to get to the bottom of why the Eagles moved on.  And if potential gang connections were a reason, the new team needs to know what the Eagles know, and what the NFL knows.

Jackson has millions of reasons to deny any gang connections or activities.  His next team has millions of reasons to get to the truth.

Despite Jackson’s name having come up in connection with two gang-related murders involving Crips, Crosson said police have no hard evidence that Jackson is a member of the gang, which was formed in the late 1960’s and has an estimated 35,000 members across the country. Crosson said, however, the Jackson routinely flashes Crip gang signs in photos on social media — and even on television during an NFL game.

Last season, Jackson appeared to throw up the hand gesture in the face of Washington Redskins defensive back DeAngelo Hall after a reception in the Eagles’ season-opener. Jackson also can be seen contorting his fingers to make a “C” — another Crips sign — in a music video he shot with former fellow Poly High student Snoop Dogg. Jackson flashed it yet again while wearing an Anaheim Angels hat on Instagram.

So Deasean is not a ganster he just pretends..

This is a Stupoid statement I have met Desean and he is a stand up guy. Him being in a gang is dumb.

  8. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 28, 2014 2:20 PM

I wouldn’t sign him unless he passed a lie detector test first. Too many concerns at this point. But then again I wouldn’t likely be in a position where I’m desperate for a WR.

Save time and just cut and paste every time a team wants to get rid of a player and just fill in the blank.

What a waste of talent. A team wouldn’t release a guy this good if they didn’t have solid proof that bad things had happened and even worse things were expected to in the future.

He’s not a gang member. And if you tell him he is he’ll bust a cap in your face.

  16. orivar says: Mar 28, 2014 2:23 PM

I’ve seen that too. He still isn’t a gang member. He’s as much as a crip as Lil Wayne is a blood, certain people will get that. That being said though I do understand why there would be concern. Throwing up gang signs will piss off actual gang members especially if you aren’t in said gang.

Real bloods don’t like Lil Wayne. So Desean really needs to be careful with what he throws up. He may ‘know’ people but he doesn’t belong in the criminal element. If something goes bad I bet he’s the first one to call the cops so needs to watch out as people will kill over something as ridiculous as that.

Being a football star doesn’t make you immortal, Sean Taylor’s unfortunate and unnecessary death proves that.

He grew up in the same neighborhood as crips so that makes him a crip.

But Riley cooper can go on full racism mode and nothing happens.

Good ole 1950s back to tha old days. Of course the eagles would resort to name slandering tactics like this. Look at this organization as a whole.

He is a man of faith, and spends his off season working with the troubled youth. What more does he need to be or do….he is here to please nobody but himself, his family, and the man up above.

Come back to Cali, DeSean, and leave the east coast bashing media in your shadow…..Be a Raider, where you are loved to be hated.

  34. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 28, 2014 2:29 PM

While not much is known about the mysterious gang, rumors abound that it is led by a character named Spanky. Desean was recruited because he is “a little rascal”.

  35. thatstinks says: Mar 28, 2014 2:30 PM

I seriously fear that to prove he isn’t a gang member he won’t sign with my Raiders . He’s even under 30 : (

  36. cowboylover says: Mar 28, 2014 2:31 PM

If that really was a crip sign he threw up and he’s not really a gang member, then why would he identify with them? That would concern me as a GM.

  37. steelerben says: Mar 28, 2014 2:31 PM

He will sign with someone and play in the NFL this season. Whether it is somewhere like Cleveland or Oakland that throws a bucket of cash at him, Cincinati that has a history of rehabbing players that have had legal issues, Kansas City to reunite with Reid, the Jets to reunite with Vick, Seattle or San Fransisco might take a whirl to continue their arms race, Carolina and New England have a terrible need at the position and could dismiss the gang ties as bad slander as long as he keeps his nose clean, or even somewhere like Minnesota, Buffalo or St Louis where there is just less trouble to find.

Bottom line, he’s getting a deal. The only question is how much money. Anyone who doesn’t structure a deal that amounts to a series of one year deals with options is insane.

  38. RussianBreadMaker says: Mar 28, 2014 2:31 PM

  39. kd75 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:32 PM

  40. bullcharger says: Mar 28, 2014 2:33 PM

He could be frozen out now. The Patriots basically can’t sign him with that hanging out there and most other teams will be pretty cautious.

I wonder given where the report originated if the Jets encouraged the report to be published to keep other teams out of the mix).

  41. blackngold4life says: Mar 28, 2014 2:33 PM

First off a real CALIFORNIA Crip not fina ware no red Anaheim Angeles hat..they dont do that in Cali.. DeSean grew up and went to high school at Poly High in Long Beach Ca..of course he knows lots of Crips that’s all that go to that school Long Beach dont have Blood gangs. So when you grow up in an environment your “Affiliation” is automatic dosent mean you selling drugs or ACTIVELY gang bangin! That detective need to do some real work. If DeSeans name HASN’T come up them dont bring it up

  42. joemammy says: Mar 28, 2014 2:35 PM

  44. joenick18 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:37 PM

He’s a tool. He used to go in my work all the time with the same group of people. Thought he was hot stuff, thought he could get crap cheaper because of his name. I’ll never forget when he got a concussion a few years ago he came in the store the next day, parked in front of the store, car was about to be towed and yeah that’s the fastest I have ever seen him juke through gondolas and out the store. Really looked concussed to me.

  45. teal379 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:37 PM

This is why a trading partner couldn’t be found. And you bet that the other NFL teams know just as much as the Eagles do – if they want to. Simple phone call.

That said – NO ONE wants the next Aaron Hernandez on their team. True or not, you can’t deny his own pictures so it won’t be all that easy for someone to simply bring him in and give him a contract.

  46. cruuuzcontrol says: Mar 28, 2014 2:38 PM

The release of this story so close to Jackson’s release is no coincidence. This reeks of the Eagles using these relationships as a justification to Eagles fans for getting rid of one of their best players. It seems to me Chip Kelly decided that his oh-so-great offense doesn’t need a $10M diva WR and the Eagles front office spun it into this.

  47. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 28, 2014 2:39 PM

Turns out the gang was neither Crip or Blood, Desean was just signing to the fellow members of his Neighborhood Watch.

  48. jerrysgloryhole says: Mar 28, 2014 2:39 PM

C’mon down to Dallas. We got plenty of gangs for you….just make sure you produce.

  49. billsmafiaordie says: Mar 28, 2014 2:40 PM

If I was a prospective team looking to sign him my first question would not be about his alleged gang ties as much as why he thinks its anything but pathetic and childish to flash gang signs as a 27 year old male… Gang signs? Your so impressive Desean!

  50. nflfolly says: Mar 28, 2014 2:40 PM

He obviously was a cancer on the Eagles and they will be much better for him being released. Anybody that embraces gang culture is a complete fool and prone to lapses of complete stupidity.

  51. whiteknightblackheart says: Mar 28, 2014 2:41 PM

  53. kaperchoke says: Mar 28, 2014 2:41 PM

If Djax is a gang member then Riley Cooper is a racist. GJ Eagles GJ!

  54. fleaman1381 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:42 PM

Probably all an excuse because him and Kelly don’t get along. Wasn’t the big issue with drafting him about his parents being so controlling or something along those lines? He could be a gang member, but I’ll reserve judgment on that until he becomes a criminal. Just say what the truth is, Philly staff doesn’t like him.

  55. babygaga19 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:42 PM

Sign Jackson, sign Cognitro, move to LA………………the Raiders will sell out every home gang, er, game.

  56. fdugrad says: Mar 28, 2014 2:42 PM

I certainly hope that ANY team which is interested in Jackson, will, PRIOR to a formal interview process address this simple question to him: “Mr. Jackson, you will notice in these several photos, you are FLASHING GANG SIGNS. If, in fact you are NOT in a gang, as you claim, what exactly was the purpose of the signs?” If Jackson didn’t have a REALLY good explanation and rationale for his behavior, that ONE question would END the pre-interview meet and greet.

  57. kaperchoke says: Mar 28, 2014 2:42 PM

  60. mancave001 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:45 PM

I was one who said I didn’t believe the Eagles would cut him or trade him. Now that they have, I’m not too upset. He’s an awesome talent, but gang or no gang…he’s a diva who is not solely focused on football. Everyone knows his work ethic is questionable at times, as is his attitude. He takes plays off, and took most of 2011 off. He was one of the only Eagles we heard about having friction with Chip Kelly (he only wanted to run with the 1’s at camp). And frankly, every time he caught the ball I’d wonder if he’d break in two. Once his trademark speed fails him, he’s done. It may turn out that there will be better chemistry between Foles and the RB/WR positions without DeSean. D-Jax was Vick’s guy, whereas Foles had Cooper. I’d rather spend the money on some defensive players at this point.

Jackson is a talented dumbass. I didn’ know about the possible gang affiliation or hand gesture. My Niners should pass on him. However, pick him up cheap and do an extensive background check w/P.I’s on the case then maybe signing him would be OK. He could turn out to be a Hernandez 2.0 though. Possible gang affiliation or not he’s made costly mistakes, especially w/celebrations that cost his team games and TD’s. It’s been said he’s lazy w/massive work ethic issues, when he’s not happy or the team’s not winning, similar to Randy Moss’s tenure in Oakland.

Eagles will fail without DJAX? They’ve done nothing but fail WITH him. Cowboys are 8-5 against the Eagles since DJAX came on the scene. A typical Desean Jackson day against the Cowboys is 3 catches for 29 yards and 0 TDs.
