Report: Raiders, Maurice Jones-Drew agree to terms

Getty Images

Maurice Jones-Drew traveled to Oakland on Thursday, and he reportedly won’t be leaving without a contract.

Jones-Drew has agreed to terms on a contract with the Raiders and will sign it if he passes his physical today, reports.

Jones-Drew met with Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie on Thursday and will now join a backfield that also features Darren McFadden, 2013 sixth-round pick Latavius Murray and former CFL star Kory Sheets.

The 29-year-old Jones-Drew grew up in Oakland and is now coming home to play for his hometown team. The Raiders hope that after back-to-back disappointing seasons, Jones-Drew can show he still has something left.

  4. punkyqb says: Mar 28, 2014 7:28 AM

So the great MJD had to settle for Oakland. LOL
I guess he’s not quite what he thinks he is or is worth what he thinks he is.

  5. monctonvike says: Mar 28, 2014 7:28 AM

Really good signing, I think they might have the best one, two punch backfield. They might want to add depth on the line. I think somewhere in the draft they need a wr and some help on D.

The Raiders seem to have had a great off-season so far.

  6. shackdelrio says: Mar 28, 2014 7:29 AM

If this was 2009, Oakland would be legit.

  7. pencilmonkeymagic says: Mar 28, 2014 7:31 AM

Good move for the Raiders. If they somehow acquired Evans or Watkins in the draft, things could get interesting. About time they had something go their way.

  8. marty2020 says: Mar 28, 2014 7:32 AM

Good luck to him. He gave the Jaguars everything he had. If he can return to form, the Raiders will have a great running back.

  11. kurtg928 says: Mar 28, 2014 7:37 AM

A formidable two headed monster emerging in Oakland this year. Maybe if they slip the Reps they can keep each other healthy all year long.

  13. heyguru1969 says: Mar 28, 2014 7:38 AM

  31. GenoAtkinswillnotbestopped says: Mar 28, 2014 7:57 AM

  40. jeremycrowhurst says: Mar 28, 2014 8:15 AM

That’s just awesome. It gives the Raiders a solid alternative at RB in case McFadden gets injured. Or maybe it’s McFadden that gives them a solid alternative in case Jones-Drew gets injured.

I mean, hey, all the time these guys have spent in the trainer’s room the last two years, what are the odds that both will be injured at the same time? Law of averages, right? Doesn’t one of them have to be healthy, eventually?

  41. kosarkid says: Mar 28, 2014 8:15 AM

He was just on the wrong side of 30 to get signed by the Steelers.

  42. jatfly73 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:18 AM

  43. uglydingo says: Mar 28, 2014 8:18 AM

Great player who contributed a lot on a lousy team. The big question is how much gas does the pocket Hercules have left in the tank? Raiders may have got a bargain in MJD.

  44. joemontanawasthegreatest says: Mar 28, 2014 8:20 AM

Raiders…you don’t spend the cap cash it rolls over to the next year. You don’t HAVE to spend it.

  45. saintsstillwillwin says: Mar 28, 2014 8:24 AM

Decent signing for them. The Raiders will definitely have a veteran’s presence this year.

  46. jagsfan1 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:26 AM

He has some mileage on him – but those “disappointing” seasons were due to injury and also playing on perhaps one of the worst offenses in NFL history over the last few years.

The talent levels, play calling, and coaching under Mularkey and even through 1st half of last year with Gus were absolutely SUB NFL caliber.

He still has something left. Dude was a warrior and we will miss him.

  47. irishinyourface says: Mar 28, 2014 8:26 AM

Oakland. Still the place where old vets come to die.

  51. thos222 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:33 AM

This one doesn’t make the best sense. Jones-Drew is old, very old by running back standards, with a lot of miles and a severe decline in yards per rush last season. It does buy them time to develop (after they find) a young back. Also, one would hope this guy carries the load and McFluff is only used as a change of pace back to catch the defence off guard. McFadden is not and never was an every down back.

  52. vstyle23 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:38 AM

Man the raiders have made a lot of moves, wow. The only question is are they creating a Legends team, …….of the past. Do these guys they picked up have anything left?

  53. 44mpo says: Mar 28, 2014 8:38 AM

I sure hope he can be the back he was a couple of years ago.

  54. zombiepatriot says: Mar 28, 2014 8:40 AM

Hopefully this means Sheets is one step closer to returning to the Roughriders as they return to the field to defend their championship season.

  55. footballfan12289 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:45 AM

  56. andyr2120 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:47 AM

  61. wryly1 says: Mar 28, 2014 8:51 AM

We just saw the Super Bowl won by the team whose starting QB passed the least, an offense that relied on power running and a dogged defense. Yes, league rules are trying to make it more of a passing and scoring game for TV ratings, but on the field, players and coaches know that running and defense still dictate.

  62. floraiders says: Mar 28, 2014 8:53 AM

  100. jagmankane says: Mar 28, 2014 10:23 AM

Love all the Jags hate. And ignorance. When was the last time Oakland won a playoff game? Jags were there in 2007 MJDs 2nd season.

He wanted to get paid knowing his career is almost over and Jacksonville in the middle of a rebuild wasn’t over paying a broken RB, Oakland likely over paid, good for him, but he’s done for. He won’t ever be a 1k yard back again and we in Jax saw he lost a step and a bit of speed. You raider fans that think he is your saving grace are delusional.

  101. saynt614 says: Mar 28, 2014 10:29 AM

The Raiders quietly have been building a very solid run blocking O-Line.

MJD running behind this line will generate a lot of 20+ yard runs.

He ran for 800 behind a very bad o-line last year, if he stays healthy… I could see him running for 1000 yards next season with The Raiders.

  102. natelan69 says: Mar 28, 2014 10:29 AM

But I have a feeling that Bronco/Chief/Charger fans are starting to feel a little nervous. These are players that have worked hard for years to get where they are and still have something to prove. Reggie needs to come up big on draft day. ONE NATION welcome home MJD!

  109. razzlejag says: Mar 28, 2014 11:16 AM

Desperate times called for desperate measures.

For those knocking the Jaguars- they outdrew the Steelers the last 2 years, haven’t had a blackout since 2008, have new ownership, GM, and coach. They graded an A in Free Agency amd have 11 picks coming up in a deep draft.

They are building the world’s largest video boards pus pools, cabanas and palm trees into the stadium.

So long, MJD, thanks for the great work and thinks for the stupid holdout.

  116. bbrophy1 says: Mar 28, 2014 11:31 AM

I would love to be objective and be excited for the Raiders moves but MJD, Tuck and Woodley are 3 guys who are always nicked up and clearly on the decline. I hope these deals amount to 1 year contracts to plug holes and McKenize gets some young talent in from the draft. If you keep doing things the same way you will have the same result. They are duplicating the strategy of signing Warren Sapp, Richard Seymour and Jerry Rice long after they gave everything they had to give to football.

  117. dadsource says: Mar 28, 2014 11:32 AM

Signed on the basis of past performance alone. He will at BEST give you 600 yards if McFadden gets hurt. Runs with a rough crowd and will sucker punch the fan base if you get in his way, then get off on all charges. (St. Augustine, bro?)

Never gives ‘his all’ and is always about himself. No leadership skills. Buh-byyye!

  122. lanzurrah says: Mar 28, 2014 11:43 AM

But I have a feeling that Bronco/Chief/Charger fans are starting to feel a little nervous

Nope, not even a little. I was a little interested in what Oakland would do with all their cap money before free agency, and they elected to let their talented guys walk (Veldheer, Houston)…brought in used garbage (Schaub, Tuck, MJD) and will continue to blow draft picks (Hayden, McClain, Heyward-Bey, Russell)

Not even slightly worried about Oak. They’re irrelevant in the NFLs landscape today.

Signing of over the hill players nobody else wanted proves McKenzie is desperate .Raider fan since the 60’s and Mckenzie needs to go and stop collecting a check for producing a 4-12 team .Next year 2-14 or 0-16.

  124. fhawk77 says: Mar 28, 2014 11:47 AM

WOW lol lol you guys seem really upset! Relax. The Raiders picked up a decent RB. Geez!! Stop worrying so much. As soon as i saw the pick up, the hate flooded in like Noah’s Ark. Relax!!! ahahahahahahahhahahahah Raiders4life

  125. p4hbiz says: Mar 28, 2014 11:47 AM

    GO RAIDERS!!!!

  126. snowdood163 says: Mar 28, 2014 11:53 AM

The Raider fan base’s delusion is somewhat worrisome. Just because this joke of a franchise finally has a little bit of cap space to sign some FAs, does not mean it’s all going to magically get you into the playoffs.
Denver Broncos notable FA acquisitions of the last few years:
    QB: Peyton Manning
    WR: Wes Welker
    CB: DRC & Aqib Talib
    S: TJ Ward
    DL: Demarcus Ware
Oakland Raiders notable FA acquisitions of late:
    QB: Matt Schaub
    WR: James Jones
DL: Justin Tuck & Lamaar Woodley

John Elway, still killing the Raiders even when he doesn’t suit up.

Commitment to excrement. Just lose baby. I would comment on the consecutive non-winning streak, but I’ve actually lost count.

  127. babygaga19 says: Mar 28, 2014 12:28 PM

Gosh, Big Reg has really used the cap space money on garbage! Is he channeling Al Davis?

If 3 yards per carry is the goal, the fade are set up nicely.

  129. englishguy24601 says: Mar 28, 2014 12:49 PM

Have fun MJD! Oakland, where players and careers go to die.

  130. Robert says: Mar 28, 2014 12:55 PM

The EBT Nation should get ready for a Super Bowl Run, great pickup.

    San Francisco 49ers

Jim Drukenmller is making a comeback, Reggie” Ted Thompson” Mc Kenzie should give a look.

Hate on Haters…..we love the hate and jealousy…

    Home Sweet Home…welcome back MJD!

    Go Raiders…Go Reggie….

  132. vegasgreek says: Mar 28, 2014 1:05 PM

All the jealous haters got it wrong ! The Raiders signed all of these older players for leadership in the locker room and to contribute to forming a winning foundation. MJD will be an excellent part time player in Oakland and provide leader ship in the locker room. DJAX just got released . If the Raiders sign him and draft WR Sammy Watkins , WATCH OUT !

  133. thetooloftools says: Mar 28, 2014 1:12 PM

    Reggie Reggie Reggie ! ! !

  134. pantherpro says: Mar 28, 2014 1:18 PM

    Oakland garbage!

  135. napavalleyshaun says: Mar 28, 2014 1:19 PM

Sometimes you have to spend a season in semi-pro football to get healthy and earn your way back to the Show. Hope to see MJD back in the NFL after his stint with the Raiders…

  136. spankmarley says: Mar 28, 2014 1:28 PM

Hey Charger, Chief and Bronco fans… As bad as the Raiders have been lately you guys, we still own the AFC West. Check the stats and yes history is a part of the game! So while you sit there and post your nonsense remember even after all these years of being “irrelevant” your teams cant even sniff our legacy! Thanks for the daily laughs!!! 15 division titles and 3 Super Bowls, suck it losers!!!

  137. screenpass says: Mar 28, 2014 1:44 PM

15 starts, over 1,100 all purpose yards, 43 catches, 5 TDs.

If MJD has another “disappointing season” like this one next year I’m sure the Raiders will be able to live with it.

  138. andreboy1 says: Mar 28, 2014 2:11 PM

This is the worst signing of them all.

RB’s fall of a cliff right about his age and he’ll just hold back younger talent that they can develop.

This whole offseason is a complete disaster and an extremely short term fix.

And if it’s a three year deal then that makes Reggie certifiably insane.

  139. raiderraffeal says: Mar 28, 2014 2:29 PM

Wow, so many Raider-Haters on here… I love how you people say these FA are “Washed-Up” or are on a “Money Grab” when they sign with the Raiders. From what I have read, all the FA contracts have been cap friendly deals that do not support the “Money Grab” theory and the whole “Washed-Up” thing is a joke. I’m sure your teams QB won’t think Justin Tuck is “Washed-Up” after he’s just had his head bounced off the turf from a Justin Tuck sack. RAIDER NATION!!!!

  140. whyuknowdat says: Mar 28, 2014 2:35 PM

Doesn’t it get tiresome to hate on a team coming off back 2 back 4-12 seasons? What 11 or 12 losing seasons? Not worried about what my team is doing but let’s go see what Oakland is doing. Hahaha I love it haters.

  141. razzlejag says: Mar 28, 2014 2:44 PM

I don’t hate the Raiders (except for the bogus call on Ray Sugar Bear Hamilton back in ’76 but the Tuck Rule made that even) but I don’t really understand what your GM is doing.

He let 2 talented guys walk in FA and brought in the over the hill guys. #confusedI am

  142. rawdog2013 says: Mar 28, 2014 3:04 PM

MJD, McFadden, Reece and RB in draft = great job reggie. This the most excitement in years

“The Raiders hope that after back-to-back disappointing seasons, Jones-Drew can show he still has something left.”

I think you meant “back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back” disappointing seasons.

11 straight seasons without a winning record!
48 straight seasons without a Super Bowl victory. I’ll take 11 straight losing seasons over that any day.

The Oakland Raiders – Where player careers go to die.
Then it must seem odd to you that the Giants keep signing those guys.

  145. racerx1225 says: Mar 29, 2014 7:41 AM

Great signing. We have 4 talented RB’s now and much better, significantly improved OL, WR and QB.

  146. completefan says: Apr 1, 2014 3:23 PM

MJD will end up third on the depth chart behind McFadden and Sheets.

  147. SAV says: Apr 2, 2014 9:08 AM

whats the obsession with playing for crap teams MJD? Oh, they pay the most lol
