A day after indictment, Ray Rice gets married

Rice Reuters

On Thursday, Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted for aggravated assault of his fiancee.  On Friday, he married her.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Janay Palmer and Rice exchanged vows last night, in a ceremony that had been scheduled for weeks.

The conscious coupling could insulate Palmer from having to testify against the man who allegedly rendered her unconscious.  But the niceties of New Jersey law won’t matter.  Since the incident happened in a casino, chances are that the only evidence needed will be the videotape of the alleged punch that knocked her out.

The video reportedly exists, and it will go a long way toward proving beyond a reasonable doubt that assault was committed, regardless of whether Palmer takes the stand.

Rice faces three to five years in prison on the felony charge.  In the wake of his indictment, the Ravens have expressed support for the veteran running back.

doesn’t the marital privilege apply only to events that occur while married?

  10. kuythasgout says: Mar 29, 2014 1:04 PM

I don’t think spouses have to/can condemn each other in court. Spousal privilege?

    This could get interesting.

  11. dawgpound3 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:05 PM

Reason they got married because I believe if once married, the spouse(wife) doesnt have to testify

  15. annes22 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:13 PM

He’s an idiot and deserves what’s coming to him. I suppose he got married, in the hopes of “getting off” any charges. What a mess he is.

  18. nickster31 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:14 PM

No, she wont have to testify, but they dont need her to. Video evidence is stronger than anything she could have said anyway. Remember, she was un conscience at the time.

  19. milkcan44 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:16 PM

Get Ray Lewis’s lawyer. He he got off after his involvement, Rice will can get off.

  20. metrocritical says: Mar 29, 2014 1:20 PM

Some wedding involve throwing rice, other weddings include stomping on a glass wine cup. With this couple, one might predict that the new Mrs. Rice will soon be stomped.

  26. jakec4 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:38 PM

Eventually Rice will have to come out of hiding and say something.

  27. buccaneerjeremy says: Mar 29, 2014 1:39 PM

Sounds like they were watching reruns on the television like Adriana on the Sopranos & came up with this brainstorm of a idea. Hey “Adriana”, “Christopher” isn’t going to be happy……

  28. Shinnbone says: Mar 29, 2014 1:40 PM

He told her they were getting married a couple of weeks ago while they were in an elevator. It’s true he’s such a great guy.

  29. doggeatdogg says: Mar 29, 2014 1:46 PM

The marriage does not insulate them from events that occurred prior to their union. Surely a lawyer told him that. Should he be convicted, he would most likely be out of football and he will forever blame her. We know all the potential scenarios thereafter. What lawyer was advising both? She should have taken settlement money and run. Maybe they can convince in court they were enacting a role for the Real Housewives show so nothing to see and please move along.

    Ray Lewis (double Homi)
    Jamaal Lewis (drug ring)
    Suggs (bleach on his girl)
A string of domestic abuse charges w/ other players
    Ray Rice

    Angry group of guys.

  31. urbusted2 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:56 PM

I’m a Browns fan so it’s not like I have Ray’s back. Having said that, the media loves kicking a man when he’s down. He did something bad and stupid and he should face it. Other than that, I hope he gets his life in order and I wish the best for them both.

  32. bigwinintx says: Mar 29, 2014 2:03 PM

They really DON’T need her testimony because the video evidence will show all that the prosecution will be trying to prove.

If the defense brings her on the stand and she starts trying to defend him, then she’s fair and open game for the prosecution, and at that point under oath, she’ll have to tell what lead up to those events.

  33. kd75 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:04 PM

I guess she didn’t want to sign the prenup in Atlantic City.

  34. bullethead527 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:04 PM

She can’t testify against her husband!

  35. uglydingo says: Mar 29, 2014 2:09 PM

Watch him get out of serving any time. There are expensive consultants handling everything to ensure that he keeps playing. Ravens are the best at extricating their players from snafus.

  36. pirate472 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:13 PM

Her testimony is not needed. The casino cameras don’t lie!

  37. kilo0986 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:14 PM

It’s nice to see the Ravens supporting assault on women and the subsequent dragging of an unconscious female. Such class.

  38. steelerstrong says: Mar 29, 2014 2:22 PM

Pathetic!!! Sure he loves her after knocking her out cold. What a mess.

  39. mcmuskie79 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:25 PM

Of course Baltimore still is supporting him because he still contributes, (just as any other NFL team would), if this was a reserve he’d have been cut long ago.

  43. favrewillplay4ever says: Mar 29, 2014 2:37 PM

Yeah this is going to end well Ray. Hope he lawyer’ed up and has a lock down pre-nup.

  44. SAV says: Mar 29, 2014 2:43 PM

Ray Rice….I feel so bad for this guy. Such a humble guy, makes one transgression and all the years of being a great guy gets flushed down the drain. I hate this judgemental society we live in.

  56. 1rockyracoon says: Mar 29, 2014 4:38 PM

Nothing says everlasting love like knocking out your partner. A man doesn’t go from a respectful person one moment and a woman beater the next. This probably was not the first time he put his hands on a woman. Hopefully he gets the help he needs.

  57. jiggy3198 says: Mar 29, 2014 4:39 PM

While there is spousal privilege, in New Jersey that does not apply to domestic violence cases

  58. patriotsdefense says: Mar 29, 2014 4:44 PM

He was a really good player from the moment he stepped on to an NFL field. I know a lot of people who want to give credit to Harbaugh and Flacco, but Rice has been the engine that drove that team to all those playoff wins 2008-20012. But he’s a tiny guy and he’s probably past his prime. In fact, it’s It’s inescapable that he’s not the same player he was even 2 seasons ago. His 2013 was worse than abysmal. And the Ravens are paying him way too much, especially after the deep regression of the RB market this off season.

I don’t think he has long as an NFL RB. This off field issue is probably destroying any opportunity he would have in the post football media world.

  59. bcedge68 says: Mar 29, 2014 4:45 PM

At least no one wound up dead. That’s called progress in the Ravens organization.

  60. bcedge68 says: Mar 29, 2014 4:47 PM

Nor can u claim spousal privliege about things that happened when u were not spouses.

  61. ravensterps says: Mar 29, 2014 4:48 PM

They got married for the same reasons anybody else gets married, not for legal protection. They’ve been together 6 years and have a child. They were engaged before the domestic incident.

  62. jamaltimore says: Mar 29, 2014 5:10 PM

  63. broncostevenp says: Mar 29, 2014 5:23 PM

They can’t force a spouse to testify.

  64. mattymarts17 says: Mar 29, 2014 5:51 PM

As a diehard Ravens fan they need to let go of Ray Rice. If there is video proof he knocked out a woman and he’s found guilty what justification could they come up with to keep him? The video of him manhandling her lifeless body is enough for me. No way to treat a woman. Ever.

  69. Canton Bulldogs says: Mar 29, 2014 7:07 PM

The organization is supporting the person and not condoning the act. If your best friend had no prior issues and did something like this you wouldn’t approve of the act but you would still try to help them. They know the person a heck of a lot better than any of us do. As a fan he should be held 100% accountable but I also like that the team didn’t turn their backs on him.

Using this horrendous situation and Ray Lewis (14 years ago) to call the organization classless is just a punk move.

  70. usa98j30t4 says: Mar 29, 2014 7:07 PM

How convenient!!!! Now she doesn’t have to testify.

Thank god this wasn’t a Patriot. We’d never hear the end of it.

    In Bill we trust.

  71. volperdinger says: Mar 29, 2014 7:28 PM

Comical to listen to the same Steeler fans that defended “Bathroom Ben” pontificate on the morality of an isolated domestic incident.

  72. realdealsteel says: Mar 29, 2014 7:29 PM

Rice is as guilty as sin. And his quick marriage to keep her from testifying is proof to the world that he knows his guilty too.

Ravens are going to take a lot of heat from woman activist groups on them condoning spousal abuse by one of their players. And rightfully so.

Rice is a little man with a chip on his shoulder and he takes it out on woman. I have no respect for him or the Ravens. None.

  73. kyblue33 says: Mar 29, 2014 7:36 PM

Sav stated this was ray’s one transgression, Oh Yeah, get in heated argument knock out your beloved girl, just one little mistake! So you think this was the first time, poor ray is a small punk-I think the crows or ravens will vote him captain. He maintains their image well.

  76. kingwshngtn2 says: Mar 30, 2014 2:41 PM

Does anybody on here read? In New Jersey if the spouse is the alleged victim there is NO Privilege! She will have to testify.
