Fans push hard for DeSean to Oakland

Jackson AP

With lots of cap space and an owner who may be inclined to clean house if the team misses the playoffs again, the Raiders have made a big push to add plenty of veterans in 2014.

Now, Raiders fans are making a big push to add another big-name veteran who suddenly became available.

The people want DeSean Jackson.  The hashtag “DJaxtoOakland” currently is atop the trending topics on Twitter.  For the illtwiterate, this means that thousands of people are including that phrase in messages posted on the social media monster, creating a groundswell for the team to bring Jackson to town.

The Raiders, we’re told, have indeed expressed interest in Jackson.  The question is whether they’re willing to make the investment necessary to close the deal.

Whatever the risk, the reward could be significant for a team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2002.  Jackson brings real explosiveness to the offense, drawing attention and opening up the rest of the field.

Last season, in his only career NFL game in Oakland, Jackson caught six passes for 150 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders.

For G.M. Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen, the importance of winning in 2014 overrides all other factors.  For owner Mark Davis, the ability to fill a dilapidated stadium that has started using tarps — and to create excitement toward building a new one — justifies what would be the boldest move by the franchise since the trade for Randy Moss nine years ago.

The best news is that the Raiders can get Jackson without giving up a single draft pick or player.  In a division with three 2013 playoff teams, Jackson could be the ingredient that propels the long-suffering franchise back to relevance.

And whether you love the Raiders or hate them, the NFL becomes a lot more fun when the Raiders are relevant.

What have they got to lose? It’s not like they had another interesting plan in the works. Do something Oakland!

Seems like a poor location given his alleged ties to LA gangs.

Do you really want to make it easier for him to pal around with those guys?

The argument has been made that hernandez would have done better(by not killing people) if he wasn’t so close to where he grew up and those influences. Same for jackson imo

IF they don’t land WR DeSean Jackson fan’s will SERIOUSLY question Raider leadership……..

That is the dumbest saying in sports. The NFL is more fun when the Raiders are good. Says who their fans!? NFL has been great every yr I’ve watched regardless if Raiders are winning or losing. I think the NFL is doing okay.

  10. krunch209 says: Mar 29, 2014 12:31 PM

As a big time fan this is not a good move. Reggio has been doing a good job filling the locker room with guys that work hard and have something to prove. This guy is the opposite. He doesn’t work hard, he has major off the field issues, and you would be bringing him back to the very state where he has all his alleged gang ties. Please don’t do it and destroy the looker room. Listen to what ex teammates are saying about him now that he is gone.

  11. snowdood163 says: Mar 29, 2014 12:31 PM

It won’t matter. Raiders will always be the anti-playoffs. Commitment to irrelevance.

Curious too know if we have money left, think we were at around 12 Million after before charles woodson deal but after Schaub deal. But then then he restructured and gave us a couple million back. If we are still fine financially then get his name along the dotted line. #DJaxtoOakland

People are so quick to judge Jackson. Do we always believe what the media says? Desean, James Jones, Moore, and Streater would look nice in Oakland. Raiders are giving fans something to be excited for.

  18. tinandebony says: Mar 29, 2014 12:35 PM

All of you people questioning this signing apparantly know more than about a third of the teams front offices in the nfl. Over 10 teams chasing him right now. Oh thats right, its because Raiders…

  19. redandgoldhitman52 says: Mar 29, 2014 12:36 PM

  22. vipod4ever says: Mar 29, 2014 12:43 PM

If this was last year, I would say NO! But the Raiders now have a solid core of veterans that will command the locker room. DJ knows that all eyes are watching and his career is in jeopardy! It would be a bold move, very much an Al Davis move! A move that would allow Reggie to grab a high performance D player in the draft like Mack at #5. Mark Davis is likely to have the final word on DJ, and if he feels comfortable, DJ is playing in the Black Hole!

  23. silvernblak says: Mar 29, 2014 12:43 PM

Forget about it! Draft Watkins with Jones is a better fit then a primp who wants more money. We don’t need him! Stack the lines and back field.

  24. wecj3381wecj3381 says: Mar 29, 2014 12:44 PM

As a Raider fan, I want nothing to do with Djax. Reggie has brought in nothing but solid character guys, most of which are proven winners. D Jax is a quitter. 2011, he quit on his team because he didn’t like his contract. I don’t care about any of this other crap. That was all I needed to know about DeSean Jackson. Don’t sign him Reggie!!!!

  25. cakesw says: Mar 29, 2014 12:44 PM

    Jackson in L.A.

What could go wrong there ????

  26. jhorton83 says: Mar 29, 2014 12:47 PM

Yeah, because Randy Moss in Oakland really worked out great. Adding all these players doesn’t really mean anything if you have a coach who doesn’t know what he’s doing. And to say Dennis Allen is in over his head is an understatement.

  27. humb0lt says: Mar 29, 2014 12:47 PM

The Raiders have had some impressive signings this off-season. The problem is, they’re still the Raiders.

  28. chapmanb2014 says: Mar 29, 2014 12:49 PM

So Oakland works their tail off the past several years to get under the salary cap and become financially healthy and they did a great job. Now they are blowing all of their hard work and spending this money on aging players that have been in the league an average of 9 years? You don’t do that unless you have a championship caliber roster like Denver has done this off season…..Just does not add up.

  29. radrntn says: Mar 29, 2014 12:56 PM

I would love to get him, but with that said we still have streeter, holmes, moore, and butler

  30. slick50ks says: Mar 29, 2014 12:59 PM

  39. grimreaper12 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:27 PM

Jackson should take a pay cut and come to New England to play with the greatest QB of all time, Tom Brady.

  40. 6thsense10 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:36 PM

I can see it now……The nobody believed in us/our former team dumped us now we’re kicking tail and taking questions later…..Would it be that strange if Oakland lands Desean that Schaub, Desean, and Maurice Jones Drew all put up big years? They’ve all done it before in the past and neither are well past their primes. Jackson is smack in the middle of his. Jones Drew may have 1 or 2 more really good years left and Schaub is 32 but since he is a quarterback age doesn’t matter as much as other positions.

  41. azjam says: Mar 29, 2014 1:43 PM

It would be an excellent move for the Raiders.
He grew up in central Los Angeles. Those are tough neighborhoods. Of course he is going to know guys in the gangs. He has had some minor issues but certainly has not been a problem. He doesn’t warrant the negative articles that have come out with his release. He is one damn good football player.

  42. roni06 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:44 PM

Wow,I’d be the first to tell you that as a Raider fan I wasn’t happy with the moves Big Dummy(Mckenzie) made in the beginning of the FA period, but man all these older dudes that he signed are all natural born leader(except Schaub)but whew, grab up D-Jax,draft Watkins and Dennarius Moore is a top #3 receiver,James Jones a top #4 all of a sudden the Raider offense is looking nice,it would have looked even nicer in my opinion if we would have picked up Vick.

  43. hanspard says: Mar 29, 2014 1:50 PM

No way. Don’t want him. Draft Sammy Watkins instead. Rather have a guy known for his work ethic and character.

  44. silverandblack052099 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:02 PM

Just put a clause in his contract. Any problems off the field he can be cut and owed nothing.

  45. billybone says: Mar 29, 2014 2:04 PM

He played in Oakland in 2009 as well. You guys need to do a better job at fact checking.

  49. bradysjock says: Mar 29, 2014 2:30 PM

The Raiders can get all the fastest guys in the league on the outside, it doesn’t matter. They have a quarterback who throws more pick 6′s than touchdowns, personally I think pryor’s better than schaub. I can’t name one offensive lineman which all of you forget is very important.

    Without Desean- 4-12
    With Desean- 5-11

  50. trayday350 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:31 PM

  51. nflofficeadmin says: Mar 29, 2014 2:41 PM

Love his skill set but when you commit to bringing in “quality guys” like Tuck, James Jones, Woodson (return), etc it doesn’t jive bringing in Desean, who doesn’t have too many former teammates giving great reviews about him as a teammate. Couple that with the hometown influence and I would have to pass on the player, as much as I wish it wasn’t the case. I just can’t see it all ending well if he comes to Oakland.

  64. professoroftruth says: Mar 29, 2014 3:50 PM

Desean Jackson would be unwise to sign with a team with such an incompetent head coach and GM. Why sign with a team when the head coach is likely to be fired during the upcoming season. Dennis Allen is the worst head coach in the NFL – bar none. If a franchise really wants to attract top level free agents, it should have a top level head coach with a track record of success. Furthermore, the Raiders don’t have a top flight, big play starting quarterback. Matt Schaub does not have the skill set to match Jackson’s talent and skill set.

  65. tbraiders says: Mar 29, 2014 4:20 PM

  66. grimmlock42 says: Mar 29, 2014 4:58 PM

  67. onderin says: Mar 29, 2014 5:01 PM

I’m not surprised most Raider fans want Desean Jackson on the team. He’s a great player.

Only thing is, this doesn’t seem like a McKenzie move at all. Reggie hasn’t shown much a habit of acquiring players that have “red flags” in their personal life. The only one that has been questionable is Stacey McGee. I’m sure his team will do some heavy research to find out of Jackson will really be a problem or not.

Also, how often does shelling out a lot of money for a WR in free agency work out?

Randy Moss, lol! Randy Moss never wanted to be a Raider He came out of bad time, when there was all kinds of turmoil going on and he begged to get out of town.

This isn’t even remotely close to the same scenario. The Raiders will benefit tremendously from the acquisition of Desean Jackson, who by the way grew up a raider fan.

I guess you are under 20 kid. The raiders used to be the Ravens and the Seahawks rolled into one. Guys with bad attitudes or busts for other teams got their second chance with the raiders and flourished in our environment. Teams were genuinely scared to play us. That embodiment of villainy is fun to have in the nfl and fun to have your team be victorious over. That is why the nfl is better when the raiders are relevant.

  77. txraiderfan says: Mar 29, 2014 7:20 PM

The problem with the Randy Moss transaction was that Big Al was still alive. RM couldn’t get away with the offensive PI like he was used to. After about 8 games (or so), Moss simply quit giving any effort. The games seem to be called much more fairly now that Al is dead. Jackson signed at 3 yrs and 6 million per (plus big incentives) would be OK

Another Raider moron! Facial.

  83. packofoneinc says: Mar 29, 2014 10:38 PM

I’m going to address all points of hate:

#1 – Pretty much now coming to light that the “Gang Banger” stuff is complete fabrication. Try twitter for the latest haters.

#2 – Missed Meetings, etc. It’s obvious Kelly didn’t like him and he didn’t like Kelly. Who cares? Reid (His former HC) wants him back because he’s a player – these issues can also be curbed by the SB winning vets the Raiders now have. Woodson said he’s cool with the signing? That’s good enough for me in terms of working hard and keeping him on the straight and narrow.

#3 – Schaub is his QB. Someone stated Schaub “crapped the bed”with AJ, well AJ still managed over 1400 yards last season and that was with a terrible OL and no run game. We’ve upgraded our OL and now have 2 legit threats at RB (BTW MJD is a beast in pass blocking). I believe that our career 90 passer rating QB will bounce back next season and having a legit #1 WR like Jackson will help.

#4 – Raiders won’t win any time soon. I don’t think any AFC West team is going to play well against the NFC West this season and save DEN, I’m worried of losing to the others as much. Whether haters want to admit it or not – we’ve gotten better this off season (And the draft is still to come). What have SD or KC added?? No one of note. For the 1st time in a great while, we’re looking better. That means we’ll win more – not less in the long term.

#5 – Better teams to play for. KC? Jackson would play 2nd fiddle to Bowe (it would be Maclin all over again) and I think he’d rather be The Man with us. Wash? They were worse than us? If they hadn’t given up the farm for their overrated QB, they’ve have the #2 pick in the draft. Bills? Yeah they’re great. Whiners?? He’d still be #2 behind Crabtree and maybe Boudin as well. I think DJ wants to be the #1 option. Bottom line we can still offer more $ and the #1 spot oh and there’s that whole Raider fan/ Cal connection.

I think haters are just worried we’re finally getting players to come to Oakland again and it scares them and yes – the NFL is far more interesting when we’re playing well. Only teams that consistently sucked in our division would want us to continue to sadness of the last decade.

Go get him RM and then we’re in the driver’s seat @ #5.

I see that alot of you believe the rumors about DJAX. Where’s the proof? I’m sure if there was some truth to it, it would be all over the internet. Its rumors. Sure he made so called gang signs, I’ve seen pics of high school girls from wealthy neighborhoods that flash the same signs and are in no way affiliated with a gang. I’m saying show me proof. Its all speculation and rumors. I’m up for giving the guy a chance. Really isn’t that what Raiders have always been know for, a second chance. DJAX to Oakland.
