Jets haven’t contacted DeSean, yet

DeSean Getty Images

After receiving criticism for dragging their feet in free agency, the Jets are . . . dragging their feet in free agency.

Per multiple reports, the Jets have yet to express interest in receiver DeSean Jackson, even though their owner said last Sunday that the team has interest in the explosive wideout recently wiped off the roster by the Eagles.

It’s possible that the Jets have become uninterested in Jackson, but if so it would make sense to say so.  The other possibility is that G.M. John Idzik is biding his time.  Which eventually could leave him out of time.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, more than seven teams are interested.  Three are aggressively pursuing Jackson.  One wants him desperately.

It’s unclear at this point which team wants Jackson badly, although it is clear that the Raiders fans do.  Fortunately for the Jets (if they plan to make a play), numbers have not yet been discussed.  Still, the process could soon be creeping toward the “speak now or forever hold your peace/piece/whatever” phase.

Deep WR class, no need to add a diva with gang ties. Idzik has been playing the Free Agency really smart so far, despite what the media says.

    Pre-season
Rex: Idzik, what the heck we doing here?
Idzik: Rex, I have a plan. Trust me.

    9 months later Jets 6-10
    Idzik: Rex, YOU’RE FIRED!
    Rex: Lets get a snack.

Desean, take a pay cut and come to New England. Would you rather catch passes from Geno Smith, or the golden boy?

    RAIDER NATION… STAND UP!!!!!

  5. vikes89allday says: Mar 29, 2014 1:24 PM

Any team would be lucky to have Desean Jackson, Why not the Vikings???

  6. qdog112 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:25 PM

Time is on the Jets side. There is no reason to rush into signing, but I would venture a guess that Jackson’s managers are fully aware of the teams who have interest.

If time is not an issue, why not wait for competing offers to roll in? I say the leverage is in waiting and chances are, the Jets will come calling, along with others who may be fence sitting.

  7. larryravor says: Mar 29, 2014 1:26 PM

Anyone surprised?? When you think that an organization cannot get anymore dysfunctional, there they go.

Granted, Desean has some issues and should go to an organizization that can deal with them. The Jets ain’t that place!!!

    I wish him the best!!!!

  8. 1pwrightt says: Mar 29, 2014 1:27 PM

DeSean may be better off with Andy Reid who seemed to turn his back on some of Mr. Jackson’s antics. The New York media will have a field day with Mr. Jackson.

  9. jetsfmleveryday says: Mar 29, 2014 1:30 PM

Maybe the jets are starting to figure this player/personnel thing out after 45 years…

  10. apeters79 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:31 PM

I don’t buy a team is desperate for him. If they were so desperate, how come they didn’t trade for him?

  11. barneyrumble says: Mar 29, 2014 1:34 PM

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, more than seven teams are interested. Three are aggressively pursuing Jackson. One wants him desperately.”

If the source is knowledgeable, who are the seven teams interested, the three being aggressive and the one desperate? If the source is knowledgeable, why don’t we see some of that knowledge with actual team names?

We are to assume the Jets aren’t one of them, so the question becomes why not, when by roster they should be. Maybe a source can spread some knowledge on that.

  12. charmcitychampions says: Mar 29, 2014 1:36 PM

Jets would be idiots to rush to pay this guy. Anyone would be idiots to rush to pay this guy. Credit the Jets for learning from previous mistakes and not rushing into the FA market to be the big players and overpay for other peoples trash. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t I guess. Go Rex. Want to see you win a SB with the Jets, or if not, then come back to Baltimore to give it another go here and pick up some more rings that way.

  13. phillysports1 says: Mar 29, 2014 1:38 PM

  16. lscratchingthesurface says: Mar 29, 2014 1:58 PM

I’m fairly sure he wants to win. So, if so then a better opportunity is a decent team. If all he wants is money go to Oakland. Better chances with coaches he’s worked w/in past etc. Winning teams with solid QB will help. Maybe KC, Seahawks, Pats, Jets, San Fran etc.

  17. hartdaddy says: Mar 29, 2014 2:00 PM

The Jets & Chiefs have the beat support systems for Jackson as they’re familiar with guys who’ve kept him outta trouble so far in his career, so naturally Desean is leaning towards Oakland. Tells me all I need to know about “DJacc”.

  18. mattseas says: Mar 29, 2014 2:12 PM

There has to be more to this story. Its a bad decision to be offering a bunch of guaranteed money until you know what the eagles know. Anything more than 1 year guaranteed is a huge gamble.

  19. mjtn says: Mar 29, 2014 2:28 PM

If there is a team that is desperate for Jackson, why wouldn’t they simply give the Eagles a 7th round draft pick? Jackson is not overpaid given his level of talent. Perhaps they thought they could get him really cheap, too? Or is all this coming from his agent? I can tell you this for sure, Jackson decision (if there is one to be made) will not be about winning or a support system. Jackson wants (needs) the money.

  20. phillysports1 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:28 PM

Don’t be surprise if Jacksonville makes a run for him !

  21. grimreaper12 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:36 PM

  22. phloorioisanarcissist says: Mar 29, 2014 2:37 PM

So after strong reports from you guys suggesting the Jets want Desean Jackson and he’d be a perfect fit in NY, now you are claiming the Jets haven’t even contacted him? Viable strong reporting. It all makes sense… (sarcasm)

  23. seabreezes51 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:41 PM

I’ll bet they have contacted the league office to find out how much is yet to come out.

  24. pftfan says: Mar 29, 2014 2:42 PM

Good! DeSean is not worth the hassle. John Idzik doesn’t want to put the lockerroom through another Santonio Part 2.

Any smart GM who needs a DeSean Jackson will instead take a burner with similar size/speed/hands in Oregon State’s Brandin Cooks for a one-tenth of the salary and one-tenth of the headache. He’s projected anywhere from 15 to 35, so literally every NFL team has a chance at drafting him.

  25. getitrightflorio says: Mar 29, 2014 2:42 PM

Maybe they didn’t want to pay a top dollar to a CB who was contemplating retirement or pay top dollar to a potential gang member and a player with character questions… Ya what bad choices. Good thing they drafted the DROY.

  26. seabreezes51 says: Mar 29, 2014 2:44 PM

If anyone remembers the Terrell Owens mess and also remembers Jackson admittedly tanking 2011… It’s no big reach to see what was coming this summer if Jackson didn’t get his contract redone.
The Eagles don’t have time for that sort of silliness. Maybe somebody else does?

  27. catquick says: Mar 29, 2014 3:10 PM

There’s no way Philly dumps this guy unless there’s more to the story. The Jets brand has taken a lot of hits in the last 2 years. They don’t need the “circus” back in town. Run like the house is on fire from him. As I understand it, there is more to come from this story.Do the Jets really need Jackson poisoning the locker room at a critical time in Geno Smith’s career?

    sports media 2014 possible headlines:

A1 – Jets sign Jackson, known gangbanger, circus continues…

A2 – Jets avoid Jackson, move on. Idzik lost, circus continues…

B1 – Patriots sign Jackson. “Genius” gets his man.

B2 – Pats don’t sign Jackson. BB wisely avoids Hernandez-like rogue.

I wonder why Jets fans can’t stand most sports sites these days. Can’t wait until Brady retires and New England goes back to being garbage like they were for nearly their entire history.

  29. nomoreseasontix says: Mar 29, 2014 3:16 PM

Man, all I read here is how half the NFL is madly chasing Jackson. There’s a huge bidding war afoot!
I’m thinking the interest is generated by the possibility that a team would be able to get him on the cheap, given his baggage.
I think most teams will walk away quickly if he won’t settle for the number they’ve got in mind.
The next several days will tell the tale.

  30. oneeyedwes says: Mar 29, 2014 3:19 PM

Jets will be in the bottom rung for years

  36. bubba703 says: Mar 29, 2014 4:46 PM

Did DJax’s agent confirm the teams that were interested in his services were actually NFL teams? The fact that not a single NFL team offered even a draft pick for him suggests the interest might be exaggerated. Regardless whether the Jets are interested, Mr. Jackson should probably prepare for a major salary reduction.

Per your story, “If the Jets have become uninterested in Jackson, it would make sense for the Jets to say so.” Why would the Jets have to say anything??? Because Pro Football Talk needs to know? As others have stated, the Jets are damned by the media no matter what they do. Now, you kill them because they haven’t let you, Mike Florio know what they are going to do?

Idzik strikes me as a GM who won’t overpay but also one who won’t bid against himself and has the patience and confidence to let the market come to him. These are good things… PFT is in the business of making stories even when there isn’t one, ultimately he will prove a lot of people wrong. Jets still needs to add a couple weapons on offense and some help in the secondary but with 12 draft picks and six of the top 150 picks, I think things will be okay… Don’t think they need to rush on DeSean but would take a big step forward by adding a significant piece before the draft

for all you jet fans that dont want djax—how do you expect the jets to ever close the gap between us and the patriots denver colts and the other teams if they dont go for tier 1 fa

if they only go for the draft keep in mind the other teams do the same as well as going for tier 1 fa
football is a violent contact game—-on the next snap a top guy’s season or career is over—-that why you always have to get depth fa and the draft and trades plus luck is needed

if you dont want good fa how many years would you give the jets to be an elite team
